To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ORMUS E. BROW'ER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fillmore, in the county of Millard and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has particular reference to farm gates and the like and it seeks to provide as its principal object a gate which may be used to close the entrance to a field or to close a road way and yet to be conveniently operated by the occupant of a vehicle which approaches the gate from either side.
A further object of the invention is to provide a gate of this character which rises upwardly when being moved to the open position, the gate, when in full open position, springing diagonally from its normal vertical position. p j
A still further object is the provision of unique means for maintaining the gate in the open position.
A still furtherobject is to provide a gate of this character which is simple in con struction and yet durable and effective in operation.
Other and further objects will appear as the invention is set forth in detail in the following description.
The drawings illustrate and the specification describes what, at the present time is thought to be 'the'most eflicient embodiment of the invention. To this embodiment, however, the invention is not to be restricted. Continued use and practice may make manifest certain desirable changes or alterations and the right is claimed to make any which do not deviate from the scope of the annexed claims.

Referring to the drawings, there is shown two upright posts 1 which are interconnected at their upper end by a transverse member 2. On the facing sides, each of these posts 1 is provided with a longitudi- Specification of Letters Patent.

nal recess 3 which terminates at a specified point below the transverse member 2. The recess 3 in each post near its point of termination is inclined toward one front face of the post and opens onto the latter at which point the recess communicates with the U-shaped member 4', the width between whose legs is substantially the same as the width of the recess 3. The legs 5 and 6 of the U-shaped member are made arcuate in shape and the free end of the leg 5 is inset being a track way for the gate 10. The
legs 5 and 6 of the U-shaped member are so formed at their point of connection as to provide a depression 11 at the terminus of the track way.
The gate 10 is adapted for vertical movement in the two recesses 3 and to facilitate this movement, it is provided at each end at the top and bottom with pintles 12, each of which carries a roller 13 which is adapted to roll in the recess 3 and in the track way formed by the U-shaped-member 4.
The gate 10 is further provided on one side and at the bottom and adjacent the lower rollers 13 with eye bolts let to each of which there is attached one end of the cable 15 the latter being, trained over a sheaf 16 rotatably mounted on a support 17 carried by the post 1 near its top. The other half of the sheaf is provided with a guard 18 to insure the cables sitting on the sheaf. Each cable 15 at the end remote from that connected to the gate, is provided with a counterweight 19, the two counterweights being slightly less than the weight of the gate, so that the latter may assume the position of closure as the result of the attraction of gravity. It will be observed that the sheaves 16, the cable 15 and their attendant parts are positioned on that side of the gate structure opposite that on which the U-shaped members 4 obtain.
On either side of the gate structure and projecting in opposite directions therefrom,
there are arms 21 which are braced against lateral displacement by the members 22 and further braced by the members 23 to resist the force imposed upon them when opening the gate. It will be observed that the two arms 21 are so positioned as to be on the right when facing the gate from either side.
At substantially the longitudinal center of the transverse member 2, and on the bottom face thereof, there are attached two pulleys 20. At the extreme end of the arms 2-1 there are also attached the pulleys 24 and at a slight distance back from the end of the arms there are pulleys 25 attached. Cables or chains 26are trained over the pulleys 24. and 20 and connecting with the gate 10 at the bottom edge and at the longitudinal center thereof. These chains 26 are of sufficient length to permit their free ends to be reached when the gate 10 is in the closed position. A pulley .27 is carried on the transverse member 2 on that face overlooking the U- shaped members 4 and is positioned in the vicinity of the pulleys 20 while another pulley 28 is carried on the underface of the transverse member 2 and in close proximity to the pulleys 20. Cables or chains 29 are trained over the pulleys 25 and connect at one end with the top of the gate 10 near the longitudinal center thereof, one of these cables 29 being trained over the pulley 28 .while the other is trained over the pulley 27.
These cables 29 are made only long enough to place their free ends within reach when the gate is in the open position. The free ends of the cables 29 are provided with weights 30 which serve to lower the free ends of these cables when the gate is raised. These weights also serve as a hand grip. The free ends of the cables 26 are similarly provided, both carrying weights 31 at their free ends. V
In the use of the invention, the gate 10 is of sufficient weight to more than balance the counter-weights 19 and which therefore normally remains in the position of closure. When it is desired to open the gate, the free end of the cable 26 may be pulled, the force necessary to open the gate being only enough to overcome the difference in the weight of the gateand the combined weight of the oounterweights. The continued pulling on the cable 26, will, therefore, serve to elevate the gate toward the tops of the posts 1 and the rollers 13 at the top edge of the gate will enter and roll over the legs 5 of the U-shaped members 4 and will finally pass into the depression 11. When the top of the gate enters the U-shaped members 4, it is thrown from its normal vertical position into a diagonal position, thus shifting its center of gravity with respect to this connection with the cables 15, thereby allowing the counter-weights to overbalance the gate. The gate will thus be held and remain in the ground thus placing their weights 30 within is claimed as new and useful is:
open position as long as the upper rollers engage the recesses 11. With the raising of the gate to this open position, the free ends of this cable 29 are lowered toward the reach. Desiring to close the gate, it is only necessary to pull on eitherof the cables 29 with a suiiicient force to'disengage the rollers from the recesses 11 and to draw the gate back toward the vertical position upon reach-V 7 5 ing which, it will overbalance the counter weights and drop by gravity to its position of closure.
It will be observed that the counterweights and their attendant parts are held to one side of the gate structure, so that the counter-weights will not impinge upon parts of the fence that may be attached to the post 1.
Inasmuch as the gate when raised moves from a normal vertical position to a position preceding the horizontal, it is possible to obtain the ordinary under-clearance for the gate without making the posts 1 any higher than is usual with swinging gates, the posts 90 of which are provided with a transverse piece similar to the piece 2 and similarly positioned.
