Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed November 16, 1917. Serial No. 202,387.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, JACOB P. ZAREK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Changeable-Speed Braces of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in drills, and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for giving the bit different speeds.
Another object of the invention is to provide a compact driving mechanism operated by ratchet means whereby the drill may be driven by the device arranged as an ordinary brace or as a high speed drill.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other. features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved brace.

In these figures 1 represents the ordinary brace part of my improved drill to the end of which my improvements are connected. 2 represents a casing carried by the end of the brace in which. is located a shaft 3. This shaft is provided with an enlarged part 4: and at its inner end said shaft carries a cup-shaped member 5 having beveled gear teeth 6 on its outer edge. A cup shaped member 7 provided with a flange 8 incloses the gear member 5 and its flange 8 slidingly engages the enlargement 4 of the shaft. 9 represents a second-cup shaped member which receives the end of the member 7 so as to form an inclosed casing with said member and the member 9 is provided with a flange 10 and a ball race 11 surrounds the opening formed by the flange. 12 indicates a shaft carrying a drill socket 13 at its lower end and passing into the casing and having its upper end inserted in a socket 13 formed in the large part 4 of the shaft 3. 14 represents an adjustable nut carried by the shaft 12 and forming the other part of the ball race 11 which receives the balls 15. 16 represents the balls of the upper bearing which are located between the member 5 on the shaft 3 and the rear part of a beveled gear 17 splined to the shaft 12. 18 indicates an L-shaped bearing block inserted within the casing and forming a bearing for the shaft 19. The outer end of this shaft is supported by a screw bolt 20 fitting in an opening in the casing and having a recess in its inner end to receive the end of said shaft. The inner end of said shaft has splined thereto a beveled gear 21 which meshes with the gear 17 on the shaft 12. The shaft 19 also has splined thereto a gear 22 which meshes with the teeth 6 on the member 5. The casing is provided with a screw oil cap 23 by which said casing may be filled with lubricant. 24 represents a ratchet wheel splined to the shaft 3; and 25 represents a similar wheel which is fastened to flange 8 of the cup 7 and these ratchet wheels are adapted to be engaged by the dogs 26 carried by the brace. 27 indicates a handle having a key-hole slot 28 therein which is engaged by a stud 29 carried by the bottom cup of the casing. The handle 27 is provided with a semi-circular end part 30 which is adapted to engage with a groove 31 formed in the shaft 12.
When it is desired to use the device as an ordinary brace, the four dogs must be in engagement with the ratchet wheels. This will lock the casing to the other parts so that the casing will rotate with the end of the brace so that the device will act as an ordinary brace. By disengaging the top and bottom dogs on one side the device may be used as a right or left hand ratchet brace according to which set of dogs is released.
It Will be understood that in this case the device Will also act as an ordinary brace. By releasing both of the bottom dogs and attaching th handle, the device is turned into a high speed drill, due to the fact that the casing is held stationary by the handle. This will cause the shaft 3 and the member 5 to rotate, which inturn will rotate the shaft 19, the pinion 21 of which is in mesh With the gear 17 In this Way the shaft 12, carrying the drill socket, Will be rotated at a higher speed than the brace. By releasing one or the other of the upper dogs which engage with the wheel 24 the high speed device may be used as a ratchet.
It is thought from the foregoing descrip tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A device of the class described com prising a brace handle, a casing movably connected with its lower end, a ratchet wheel connected With said casing, a cup-shaped gear in said casing, a ratchet Wheel carried thereby, dogs connecting said ratchet Wheels with the brace handle, a bit shaft carried by the casing, a gear thereon, gearing carried by the casing and connecting said gear With the cup-shaped gear, and a handle removably connected with the casing.
2. A devieeofthe class described comprising a brace handle, a casing rotatably secured to the lower end of the handle, a ratchet wheel splined to said casing, a ratchet Wheel splined to the movable end of the brace, a cup-shaped gear in said casing and connected with said movable end, a
.pair of dogs engaging with each ratchet wheel, a bit shaft rotatably carried by the casing, a gear thereon, a support in said casing, a shaft journaled therein, a small pinion on said shaft engaging with the cup shaped gear, a large pinion on said shaft engaging with the gear on the bit shaft and the handle connected With the casing.
