BENJAMIN TALBOT, OF MIDDLESBROUGH, ENGLAND.
PROCESS FOR REMOVING THE CAVITIES IN RECENTLY-CAST INGOTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
Application filed March 13, 1918. Serial No. 222,184.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN TALBOT, a subject of the King of Great Britaln, res ding in Middlesbrough, England, have 1nvented a certain new and useful Process for Removing the Cavities in Recently-Cast Ingots, of which the followlng is a specification.
To remove the cavity or piping which normally forms near the top of the cast iron or steel ingot and to difluse the segregatlon, it has heretofore been proposed to compress the ingot either while in its mold or after removal by presses or rolling either while the interior of such ingot is still in a molten or plastic state or after it has been re-heated, and inaddition to the pressure method it has been proposed to employ means for keeping the upper portion of the ingot hot after the lower portion has set, say for example by employing ganister or brick tops or limngs at the upper portion of the ingot or by forming an annular chamber there and filling it with molten slag or the like, or by covering the ingot top with heat insulating materials; various other proposals for the same purpose also have been put forward.
The present invention relates to a process of removing the cavityand dilfusing the segregation by compressing the upper portion of a recently cast ingot before the interior of this part is entirely solidified; the process can be applied if the ingot has simply been cast in an ordinary iron mold, but it is believed that better results can be attained when the casting has been effected in a composite or topped mold as indicated above, as in such case with proper manipulation it is believed that a very substantial decrease in the amount of waste or crop end to be discarded will be secured. 7
According to this invention, it is proposed to employ a series of oppositely set hydraulically operated rams (for example,
one for each face of the ingot) carrying heads or'dies of less width than the ingot face and so formed as to produce when employed a concave depression. Preferably extending from below the bottom of the ingots cavity at least as far as the part at which the crop will be made.
The accompanying drawing shows dia- Copies of this patent may be obtained for grammatically an example of means for compressing the ingot. Figure 1 is a plan view of four hydraulic rams arranged in pairs, the members of each pair being disposed in the same straight line and on opposite sides of the ingot. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
A is the ingot, B B B B, hydraulic rams, B being opposite B and B opposite B The operative faces of the rams are formed of the dimensions and curvature suited to produce the required depressions in the ingot A. The depressions are shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Having thus fully described the nature of my said invention and the best means I know for carrying the same into practical effect, I claim 1. A process for removing the cavity in a recently cast ingot, consisting in applying pressure to form depressions in the top portion of the ingot and on opposite sides thereof.
2. A process for removing the cavity in a recently cast ingot, consisting in applying pressure to form depressions in the top portion of the ingot and on opposite sides thereof, the said depressions extending from below the bottom of the cavity at least as far as the part at which the crop will be made.
3. A process for removing the cavity in a recently cast ingot, consisting in applying pressure on opposite sides of the said ingot and at the same horizontal level.
4. A process for removing the cavity in a recently cast ingot, consisting in applying pressure on opposite sides of the said ingot and at the same horizontal level, pressure being applied on each face of the ingot.
5. A process for removing the cavity in a recently cast ingot, consisting in applying pressure to the opposite faces of and forming depressions in the ingot of less width than said faces.
7 In testimonywhereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing. witnesses.
BENJAMIN TALBOT.
