Description

F. F. MEYRELLES,
STOPPER.
APPLICATION FILED MAYZB; I918 Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
/ win/0' S E S S E N H W ATTORNEY FLAMINIO- F. MEYRELLES, WEST SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
srorrrm.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 28, 1918. Serial No. 237,023.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLAMINIO F. MEY- RELLEs, a citizen of Portugal, residing at West Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of-Massachusetts, U. S. A., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly cially adapted for use in connection with bottles and similar containers.
to stoppers, and
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a stopper of simple construction and operation provided with a gripping member to facilitate extraction of the stop- "per from a bottle neck.
provide a simple from the destructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2, is a central vertical section through the same.
Fig. 3, is a detail perspective of the grippin member.
' Fig. 4, is a side view of a modified form I of the invention.
Fig. 5 is a central vertical section through the form illustrated in Fig. 4.
Fig. -6, is a perspective detail, with the elements disassembled, of the gripping member employed in connection with the form illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5.
usual shape and The cork stopper 1 is of construction, and is provided in its lower or smaller end portion with a central substantially cylindrical recess which is closed by a plug 2 which may be formed from cork secured in the recess by water proof cement, or any other suitable material such as rubber, gum, etc. A sheet metal disk 3 is mounted in the upper end of the recess 2 which receives the plug 2, andis provided with a central aperture through which is inserted the shank 4 of a gripping member indicated generally by 5. The
'to a cork. stopper espe-- be readily cylindrical recess shank 4 is provided, at its lower end, with an integral head 6 which serves to efiectually prevent detachment of the member 5 from disk 3. This member 5 may be formed by bending from a suitable length of wire the upper portion of which is bent to form the loop 7 adapted to receive any suitable instrument for facilitating extraction of the cork. The
isk 3 is provided with two integral diametrically opposite teeth or points 8 which engage into the body of the stopper 1 so as to effectually prevent displacement of the disk. The teeth also serve to prevent turning of the disk by turning of member 5 thus eliminating all possibility of-the disk being loosened in the recess 2.
In the form illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the stopper 9 is provided, at the central portion of its lower end with a substantially 10 which is adapted to be closed by a plug A disk 12 is mounted in the upper end of the recess and is provided with diametrically opposite notches 1 3. These notches receive the spaced arms 14 of a substantially rectangular gripping member 15, the lower end bar 16 of which passes beneath the disk 12 the upper end of the arms 14 being twisted together as at 17." s will be noted clearly from Figs. 2 and member 15 projects above the upper end of the stopper 1 so as to provide a substantially semi-circular loop 18 which is adapted to receive a suitable instrument inserted therethrough to facilitate the extraction or removal of the stopper. from the; neck of a bottle or similar container. I
In both forms of the device, the stopper may be readily removed from the neck of the bottle into which it has been inserted by placing a suitable instrument through the loop of the gripping member and then exerting outward pull on the member. This enables the cork to be easilyremoved and the stopper thus constructed may be readily used in connection with a bottle or similar container of standardv construction. Also,
in'view of the "fact that the recess in which the reinforcing disk for the gripping member is mounted is completely closed by the plug inserted thereinto, all danger. of
injury to'the contents of the container by contact with this disk or the gripping member is eflt'ectually eliminated.
The foregoing descr ption and the draW- 11 fixedly secured therein.
inserted therethrough ings have reference to what may be 'con-.
sidered the preferred, or approved form of 'ment and combination of parts, materials,
dimensions, etc., as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
'Havingthus described'my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device of the class described, a stopper provided in its lower end with a recess, a disk seated in said recess and notched in opposite edges, a wire extracting element having parallel. arms projecting from the, recess through the stopper and connected at their upper ends, and a cross bar connect ing their lower ends across the bottom of said disk, the arms standing in said notches, and a plug closing said recess beneath the disk and grooved across its upper end to I receive said cross bar.
In testimony whereof I aflix my sigdature in presence of two witnesses.
FLAMINIO F. MEYRELLES. Witnesses: I a 1 OLMORE C. FRANCIS, C. B. SEAGRAVE.
