Description

C. C. FRICKE.
DIFFUSER. APPLICATION FIL ED MAY 19. 917- Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
s2. .1: as c. more, or CHICAGO, rumors, nssrenoa to THE PHOENIX GLASS comr, or rrrrsnunen, rnnnsynvnnm, A coarcna'rron or wnsr vmemm.
I DIFFUSER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
' Application filed May 19, 1917. Serial No. 169,641.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. FRICKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in- Diflusers for use in connection with lighting units of the type shown in United States Design Letters Patent #50427, issued March 6, 1917, of which the following is a specification.
Devices of this kind are usually supported by means of a holder secured to the upper portion thereof from the center of which depends the socket for the lamp. This holder pockets a good deal of the light flux as well as failing to reflect any part thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide a device which will completely cover the holder, and [which will be constructed of material which will reflect and diffuse the light flux, thereby materially increasing the appearance and efiiciency of the unit, and has for its further object to provide a device which will be self supporting and will not require additional mechanism to hold it in place, other than that furnished by the globe of the lighting fixture. V
My means of accomplishing the foregoing objects may be more readily understood by having referenceto the accompanying drawings, which are hereunto annexed and are a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the nitrogen unit referred to, partly broken away to show the use and operation of my diffusing and reflecting member.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the diffusing and reflecting member.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
As shown in the drawings, the lighting unit 3, is supported by a holder 4, which is provided with the usual thumb screws 5, to engage the neck 6, of the unit 3. The holder is secured in the usual mannerto a ceiling canopy 7, attached to the usual outlet. The electric 'wires are secured to the socket 10, which carries a type C lamp 11. Mounted intermediate the inner portion of the neck 6, and the upper end 12 of the electric lamp 11, is mounted my difl using and reflecting member 13. This member may be manufactured of glass, metal, paper, IWOOd or fiber and coated with suitable material to reflect and diffuse the rays of light striking thereon.
The shape of the diffusing member 13, makes it self adjusting in the neck or collar part of the holder 4, so that no additional screws or other fittings are needed.
As shown in the drawings, the difiusing member is flared with an outwardly flaring wall 14, and an inwardly concave portion 15, there being an opening 16 in the center of the diffusing member to permit the passage of the end 12, of the electric lamp 11.
Practice has shown that the use of this device, on a nitrogen unit of the type described materially increases the efliciency of the unit without adding enough to the expense to effect the saving by its use.
Having described my invention what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a. lighting unit, comprising an upper and lower reflector, and a central holder supporting the upper reflector, of a diffusing and reflecting member mounted within said unit, said member being in the shape of an annulus, having side walls which flare outwardly and engage the neck of the upper reflector, and an in wardly depending conoidal portion, said member being formedof material which will diffuse and reflect the light rays.
In testimony whereof I have signed the foregoing specification.
