ILWAY-CAR DRAFT-GGING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 41, 19119.
Application filed August 25, 1916. Serial No. 118,771.
To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Railway Car Draft- Biggings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railway car draft riggings.
An object of the invention is to provide a draft rigging for cars of high capacity; wherein the necessity for stop castings is obviated; and wherein a novel type of yoke is provided, having the metal thereof distributed to the best advantage to withstand the heavy shocks in service.
In the drawing formin a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a Iongitudinal, vertical section of a draft rigging showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, horizontal sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1 and taken on the line 2-2 thereof. And Fig. 3 is a transverse, vertical section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In said drawing, 1010 denote channel center or draft sills of usual form, the same being each provided with five slots, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15, all in horizontal alinement. The slots 11 are considerably elongated to accommodate the forward and rearward movements of a coupler key 16 which connects the draw bar 17 with the improved yoke A, hereinafter described. The slots 12,
13, 14 and 15 accommodate the front follower 18, front inter-mediate follower 19, rear inter-mediate follower 20 and rear follower 21, respectively. Each of said followers consists of a plain flat plate mounted on edge and adapted to reciprocate back and forth in the usual manner, as will be understood. The followers are prevented from accidental displacement by any suitable means, such as the cotters 22.
The yoke A. as shown, is in the form of a casting having an upper horizontal arm 23,
lower horizontal arm 24, rear connecting wall 25, inter-mediate thimble or post 26 which is of l-l-shape in horizontal cross section, and a hooded forward end, the latter havingside walls 2727 slotted as indicated at 28 to receive the coupler key 16. ,As appears from Fig. 2, the rear end of the draw bar abuts the front follower 18 and is adapted to actuate the latter directly in bufing movement. The upper and lower horizontal arms of the yoke are connected by an integral, centrally located vertical web 29 (see Figs. 2 and 3), thus making the vertical section of the yoke of I form, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The web 29 is cut away as indicated at 30, 31, 32 and 33 to accommodate tandem arranged followers, are horizontally disposed twin springs 3134, thus providing a tandem twin gear. The parts of the gear are supported by suitable means such as the saddle plates 35-35, the latterbein' detachably bolted to the lower flanges o the center sills.
In operation, in draft the yoke A is pulled forwardly, thus moving the followers 19 and 21 forwardly and compressing the springs therebetween and the other followers 18 and 20, respectively. In buffing, the front follower 18 is directl actuated, as hereinbefore pointed out and t e yoke A is moved simultaneously with the draw bar through the instrumentality of the key 16, thereby actuating the follower 20 by means of the post or tlnmble 26.
From the preceding description, it will be seen that I have provided a gear of highcapacity: which employs followers that ma be readily and cheaply manufactured; whic obviates the necessity of side castings; and wherein the shocks are well distributed to the draft or center sills.
I claim:
As an article of manufacture, a yoke for railway draft rigging, said yoke comprising a casting having upper and lower, fiat, hori zontally extending arms and integral, vertically extending, longitudinally spaced,
connecting sections, said yoke havin also a centrally disposed, vertically exten ing' integral web between said upper and lower horizontal arms, said Web being cut away adjacent said vertical connecting portions of the yoke to thereby accommodate movements of the followers with respect to the yoke,
maaeia said web being adapted to act as a spacer between horizontal twin arranged shock absorbing units.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 22nd day of August, 1916.
JOHN F. OCONNOR.
