WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
Application filed am 3, 1918. Serial N6. 237,917.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVERETT M. BUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haverstraw, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved wrench, which is operable somewhat after the mannerin which tongs are manipulated.
It is frequently desirable to use a wrench in places which are inaccessible to lniown types of wrenches, and the primary object of my invention is to provide an improved form of wrench of simple and economical construction, which may not only be applied to all the uses to which existing types of wrenches are applied, but may also be used in places where existing forms of wrenches could not be used. One such use with which I have had considerable experience, is the manipulation of nuts in the universal joint of Ford automobiles. I-Ieretofore such nuts have been accessible only to a finger or a piece of wire, neither manner of manipulation being satisfactory, but my improved wrench may be easily inserted into such joint for the purpose of grasping the nuts therein.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in perspective in the accompanying drawing.
Referring to the drawing, it will be noted that the wrench consists of two like members, each comprising a handle portion 10,
an intermediate web portion 11, a head 12, and a jaw or socket 13. The handle 10 and web 11 of each member are relatively offset by means of the twist 14; so that the plane of the Web 11 is at a right angle, or substantially so, to the plane of the handle 10. As indicated at 15 the head 12 is curved or bent downwardly so as to lie in a plane substantially parallel to but on a different level from the plane of the intermediate web 11. The two wrench members are pivoted together by means of the pivot 16 passing through a suitable point of the webs 11.
The device is an exceedingly simple one, and may be stamped from flat metal stock, such as sheet iron or steel. The cost of manufacture is low and the operation readily apparent.
What I claim is A wrench comprising a pair of like members pivoted together, each member including an intermediate web, a head at one end of said web in a plane parallel to but on a different level from that of the web, an internally squared jaw at the end of the head, a handle at the other end of the web, and a twisted portion connecting the web and the handle whereby the web and handle are relatively offset so that they are in planes substantially at a right angle to each other and said handles are adapted to lie flat against each other when the wrench is closed.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
EVERETT M. BUSH.
