The boss 88 is formed in the arm 75 and in said arm and in the boss is formed abore 84 in which is disposed a plunger 85 and a com pression spring 86, the latter being held in place by the screw 88. The nose of the plunger 85 projects from the arm 75 in position to engage the tail 81 of the label follower armso that the spring 86 tends to rock the same on its pivot to carry the label follower arm to its inner position. A sleeve 89 is carried by the part 76 and the latch 90 is journaled on said sleeve, said latch being provided with notch 91 adapted to engage ear 99 projects from one of the ears 77 and Y a plunger 100 having an enlarged end 101 engaging the shoulder 92 is mounted in said car so as to slide back and forth, the upper end of said plunger being threaded and provided with nuts 103 and 102 adjustable thereon. A bracket 104 is secured to the sewing machine head and provided with a laterally projecting portion 105 which is adapted to engage the nut 103 on the plunger 100 when the work holder presser foot is lifted upwardly at the termination of the cycle of the machine. The lifting of the work holder presser foot causes the plunger 100 to be forced downwardly to rock the latch 90 on its pivot against the pressure of the spring pressed plunger 96 so to release the label follower arm. A plunger 106 is slid-ably mounted in the sleeve 89 and provided with a threaded rear end 107 and a nut 108 on the same. A bracket 109 is secured to the sewing machine by the screw 110 and provided with a projecting portion 111 adapted to engage the nut 108 on the plunger 106 to force the same forwardly.
When the work holder presser foot moves rearwardly during the cycle of the machine, the nut 108 engages the portion 111 of' the bracket 109 so as to force the plunger forwardly to rock the label follower arm on its pivot against the pressure of the spring pressed plunger 85 so as to carry the label follower arm 79 to its outer position. The label slide comprises the slide members 4- -5 secured to the arms 12 by the screws l-l. The bottom plate 112, provided with a pair of longitudinal slots 113. is secured to the bottoms of the curved side members 4-3. said side members and bottom plate being curved on the arc of a circle of which the bearing of the label follower arm is the center. The label follower 11st is formed integral with the label follower arm and proi'ided with rearwardly projecting fingers 115 having downwardly projecting lugs 116 disposed in the slots 113 of the bottom plate 112.
the label follower arm rocks upon its pivot- 78, the label follower moves back and "forth;
over the top plate 112. The label guide 117. is secured to the top of the side members 43 and provided with rearwardly and downwardly extending fingers projecting from the forward edge of said label guide-so as to guide thelabel into place beneath the label holder member The bottomplate 119 3 is secured to the bottom of the work holder member and provided with a label opening 120 and a pair of upstanding lugs 121 adjapresser foot and label holder presser foot have been lifted to release the label and the work. When the elevating lever 5 is lifted, lifting the link 7 and the slide 15, the first movement of the slide rocks the lever 47 on its pivot rod 48 so as to retract the upper thread cutting knife 53 to cut the upper thread which is disposed in the notch 56 of said knife. A further movement of the slide 45 lifts the label holder presser foot relative to the work holder presser foot until the bar 61 strikes the stop pins 68. The continued movement of the slide 45 lifts both the label holder presser foot and the work holder resser foot so as to carry the latter away f i'om the bottom work plate to release the work. This lifting movement of the workholder presser foot causes the nut 103 on plunger 100 to engage the portion 105 of the bracket 104 and the latch 90 is consequently tripped against the action of the spring pressed plunger 96 so that the notch 91 thereof is carried away from the projection 82 and the label follower arm 79 is released. The spring pressed plunger 85,
acting on the tail 81 of .the follower arm,
moves the latter from its outer to its inner position and the label which has previously been fed into position relative to said label follower is carried down into position beneath the label holder member and above the bottom plate of the work holder presser foot so that when the label holder member is depressed, the label is gripped in position over the label opening 120 of the bottom plate 119 ofthe work holder presser foot. A piece of work having been 1nserted,the elevatin lever 5 is manipulated to lower the labe holder presser foot and the work holder presser foot to the position shown in the drawings. The driving gear 18 then drives the head 16 and the carrying arm 19 i in a predetermined path. With reference to Fig. III of the drawings, the path of the head is as follows: First downwardly on Fig. III, then to the left of Fig. III, then upwardly on Fig. III, then to the right of Fig. III, then downwardly on Fig. III to the position shown in Fig. III. As the work carrying arm 19 moves to the left of Fig. III, or rearwardly, the guide base 2 engages the rear end of the'pin 69 and pushes the same-forwardly projecting the upper thread it is automatically latched in said position v by latch 90 which is under the influence of the spring pressed plunger 96.
Part of the mechanism shown and described in this application is also shown and described in the pending application of Arthur Rosenthal, Serial No. 14,326, filed thirteenth day of March, 1915. Our present invention, however, does not have to do with these parts but has to do with the label feeding mechanism and the means for actuating the same. A reference to the specification and drawings of these two applications will show that a label feeding mechanism of either type shown might be applied to the work holder presser foot shown in these two applications since in both cases the label slide is attached to the forwardly projecting arms of the work holder presser foot and the label feeding mechanism or the mechanism for actuating the label follower is carried by the work holder presser foot.
