GUIDIN G- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
Application led June 5, 1918. Serial No. 238,325.
To all whom t may concern:
vention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby it may be employed with equal facility .in connection with vertical or inclined lettering in accordance with the requirements of practice.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which is adapted to be.
employed in connection with a T square or other instrument and which includes two relatively movable members whereby the device may be readily and conveniently employed in the production of vertical letters or of letters arranged on diifering inclines.
The invention consists in the Vdetails of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved guiding device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fullyV set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to i 'describe the same with reference to the ac- Figure 1 is a view 1n top plan of a. guiding device constructed in y an embodiment of my invention; and` fcompanying drawings, wherein:
accordance with Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating the pivotal connection between the swinging arm and the plate as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawlngs P denotes a plate formed of transparent xylonite-or other transparent material and which has produced therein a series of openings l oval in form and of differing sizes. By having the plate P of transparent material it will be at once self-evident that said plate offers no visual obstruction to the work. The upper or outer face of the plate P is provided thereon with the markings 2 coacting with each of the openings l and `delining the longitudinal and transverse Vaxes thereof so that the center of the opening may 'be readily determined by the eye vand which is of especial importance when it is desired to produce ovals concentric to the oval defined by each of the several openings 1. The advantage when used in connection with my improved scriber which is particularly described and claimed in my copending application executed on even date herewith, Serial No. 238,324..
The plate P is oblong in form and secured to opposite extremities of a longitudinal marginal Vedge thereof are the oppositely directed arms 3 held to the plate P through the medium of the coacting threaded pins 4:
and nuts 5. The arms 3 are secured to the upper face of the plate P and pivotally engaged with the outer end portion of one of the arms 3 is anV elongated arm 6 arranged in the same plane as the plate P andhaving its longitudinal edges straight. Intermediate its length the arm 6 is provided with an upstanding button 7 or the like whereby the same may be conveniently manipulated during a working operation.
The arm 6 is of a length in excess of the length of the plate P and its free end portion is vprovided with the laterally directed extension 8 also in the same plane as the plate P and which extends in a direction toward the plate but at a side thereof.
The extension 8 is provided with the arcuate'slot 9 concentric to the pivot 10 of the arm 6 and arranged along said slot 9 are the degree graduations 11 whereby the angle of inclination between the arms 6 and the longitudinal axis of the plate P may be determined.
The second arm 3 overlies the extension 8 present guiding device is of especial i and has disposed therethrough the holding screw 12 Which is also directed through the slot 9. Coacting With the screw 12 is the binding nut 14.
In practice the outer longitudinal edgeofthe arm 6 is adapted to be brought in contact With a T square or other guide and When the plate Pand arm 6 are in contact the openings l are in a position for use in connection With vertical lettering. When it is. desired to employ the guide in connection with inclined lettering the plateP and arm 7 are relatively moved to the desired degree as Will beV readily determined by the graduations 11. Y
As has been been-previously herein stated the guiding device as herein disclosed is particularly adapted for use in connection With my improved scriber described and claimed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 238,234, and in practice the needle of such scriber is positioned at the center of the desired opening 1, and Which center may be readily determined by the eye of a skilled artisan in vienT of the markings 2 hereinbefore referred to.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, it is to be noted that themajoraxis of each of the openings l is substantially at right angles to the margin of the plate l? with Which the arm 6 coacts.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a guiding device constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility With which it may be assembled and operated and it avillI` also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modiiication Without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish t0 be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafterclaimed.
I claim:V
1. A deviceof the character described comprising a plate provided With an opening, an arm pivotallyengaged at one end portion with the plate, andcoacting means carried by theiplate and the opposite end portion of the arm for holding the arm and plate at different relative angles, said plate having markings ona face thereof radially tosubstantially the center of theopening.
2, Ardevice ofthe character described comprising a Plate provided rWith an opening, an arinA pivotallyengaged with the plate, the longitudinal edgS of the arm being straight, andfcoacting means carried by the plate and arnifor holding the arm and plate atdiiferent relative angles, said plate having markingsv on a. face.. thereof radially to substantially the center of the opening, said arm and plate being in the same plane.
3. A device of the character described com prising a plate provided With an opening, an arm pivotally engaged with the plate, and coacting means carried by the plate and arm for holding the arm and plate at different relative angles, said plate having markings on a face thereof radially to substantially the center of the opening, the opening in the plate being oval in form, the arm coacting Wih a marginal portion of the plate, lthe major aXis of the opening being substantially at right angles to said margin ofthe plate.
4. A device of the character describedcomprising a plate having a straight edge and provided With an opening, an armpivotally engaged at one end portion with an end portion of the plate adjacent the straight-,edge thereof, said arm being of a length to eX- tend beyond theA opposite end ofthe plate when the arm and plate are substantially in parallelism, the longitudinal edges of the arm being in parallelism, the opposite end portion of the arm beingprovided With an eXtension disposed toward the plate but beyond the plate, and means-coacting With the plate and extension of the arm for holding said plate and arm at different relative angles.l
5. A device of the character described com-Y prising a plate having a straight edge and provided With an opening, an arm pivotally engaged at one end portion with an endportion of the plate adjacent the straight edge thereof, said arm being of a length to extend beyond the opposite end of the platel when the arm andplate are substantially. in parallelism, the longitudinal edges of the arm ubeing in parallelism, the opposite end portion ofthe arm being provided With an extension.
disposed toward the plate but` beyond the plate, and means coacting With the plate and extension of the arm for holding said plate and arm at diiferent` relative angles, said plate, arm, and extension being in substantially the same plane.
6. A device ofthe character described comprising a plate having a straight edge and provided With an opening, an arm pivotally engaged at one end portion with an end portion of the plate adjacent the straightedge thereof, said arm beingof a length to extend beyond the opposite end of the plate When the arm and plate are substantially in parallelism, thel longitudinal edges of the arm being. in parallelism, the. oppositeend por tion of the arm being provided vvithanez;d tension disposed toward the plate but'beynd the plate, said extension beingprovided with an arcuate slot concentric 4to the pivot of the arm, a second arm carried by'theendofthe plate adjacent the extension and overlying the extension, and a clamping member. earried by the second arm and disposed through tially the slot of the extension.
7. A device of the character described comprising a plate provided with an opening,
an arm pivotally engaged with the plate,
the center of the opening, the open- 10 ing in the plate being oval in form.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
