Description
MAURICE PONTIO, or PARIS, FRANCE.
MOLDED OBJECT IN IMITATION OF PORCELAIN.
No Drawing.
To all whomitf may concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE Pon'rro, citi zen of the Republic of France, residin at 7 Rue Legraverend, Paris, in the Repu lie of France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Molded Objects in Imitation of Porcelain, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is the manufacture of heads and bodies for dolls and in general the production of all objects capable of being molded, especially busts, statuettes, bases, dress forms, artificial limbs, photographic trays or dishes for various purposes and divers parts for all kinds of apparatus, such manufacture being carried out by the following process.
The material used for producing these objects consists essentially of a mixture of mineral 1powders, such as talc, kaolin, plaster of ar's, Spanish white, or Meudon white, etc, made up by the use of an aqueous solution of gelatin or gelose mixed with casein, such mixture bemg used alone or together with in arabic or any other adhesive mucilaglnous substance.
In this way, there is formed a paste'which is applied in successive layers in a mold in order to obtain dolls heads and bodies, and these are afterward rendered insoluble by placing them in a bath of formic aldehyde or any other product which willrender gelatin insoluble. After drying, the materlal is decorated and varnished as may be required.
Hardenin is produced by the drymg of the materia in which the gelatin has been rendered insoluble by the action of the formol.
As the process of rendering material insoluble by formol is a very slow one, there is no disadvantage in using the action of the latter before the molding, if desired, for the paste will remain liquid for a certain time.
In this latter case the paste containing the formol already added, is applied in succes-, sive layers in the mold as above mentioned, and after drying it is decorated and varnished as may be required.-
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed J une 1, 1917. Serial No. 172,885.
It will thus' be seen that the formol treatment can be carried out either before or after the molding.
The following method of operating is preferable:
- The operation is commenced by dissolving casein in a water bathin a certain quantity of boiling water (with a minimum of 10 grams of casein per 100 grams water) this being rendered alkaline by adding a few drops of ammonia or caustic soda solution. The casein can be considered as sufliciently dissolved when no grains are seen upon the bottom of the vessel.
To the above solution there is added sheet gelatin (with a minimum of 1'0 grams of gelatin per 100 grams water), then arabic of the weight of the gelatin) w i dli has been previously dissolved in hot water and filtered through cloth, and lastly the mineral powders in variable quantity and number according tothe appearance and size of the object which it may be desired to obtain, as well as the required amount of coloring matter to obtain the desired color for the paste. This mixture is stirred constantly until it becomes quite homogeneous and is then allowed to cool, but this under a .constant stirring. While still in the liquid state, the above paste is used to prepare a hollow object by applying it in successive layersinside a mold, and it is allowed to solidify until completely cold. The molded object is now removed from the mold and placed for several hours in a 15 per cent. formol solution, then it is dried in an oven whose temperature is gradually varied from 25 to 80 degrees centigrade. Lastly, it is polished and decorated according to the case.
Objects obtained by this process are very strong, and the expense is a minimum.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A molded object in imitation of porcelain containing an impalpable powder, a coloring substance, a solution of alkaline case- Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
' inate, an aqueous solution. of gelatin, a gum In testimony whereof I have signed my and formol, substantially as described and name to this specification in the presence of 10 for t1: puiggie soet forth. f two subscribing witnesses.
2. mo 0 ject in imitation'o porce- 5 lain containing an impalpable powder, a 1 MAURICE PONTIO solution of alkaline caseinate, an a ueous Witnesses: solution of gelatin, a gum, and formo sub- Loms Mosns, stantially as described. CHAS, P. Pnnssmr.
