UNITED STATES PATENT QFFTQE,
DONALD PARKER, or TAMPA, FLORIDA.
BOX-PRESS.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DONALD PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing .at Tampa, in the county of :Hillsborough and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inBox-Presses, of
' which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in a fruit box press particularlyof the type disclosed in Letters Patent N 0. 985,540. i V
The present inventionrhas for its principal objects to provide aconstruction wherein the clamping arms are preferably two in number, one adapted to cooperate with each end of the fruit box and are'connected with an equalizingframe movable upon certain operating mechanism whereby a uniform pressure is applied to both ends of the box cover regardless of the height or elevation thereof above .the table and within certain limits, thus insuring the applying of the cover to the box and the application of a uniform pressure to the upper layers of fruit for the proper pressing of the same within the box without in any way injuring the pressed or packed fruit.
Withthe above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation of the ap paratus illustrated in Fig. 1. 1
Referring more particularly to the several views of the drawings, wherein like charac ters' of reference designate corresponding parts, the numeral 1, indicates a suitable base or table on which is positioned the filled box with a cover applied thereto. The base or table is supported preferably at its four corners by the legs 2 andis also supported intermediate of its length by the central sup port 3. The'rear'corner supports 2, project Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
Application filed .Tune 12, 1918. Serial No. 239,614.
a slight distance above the base or table 1 and suitable guide or brace members 4 are positioned in slight spaced relation thereto and extendparallel therewith forming suit able vertical guides 5 at the inner side of the rear corner supports 2.
A suitable frame 6 extends the rear corner supports 2, members 4 and guldes 5 and the same is angularly bent outwardly or forwardly as at 7 at its outer end providing arms for properly positioning a filled box on the base or table 1 and to insure the closing of a portion of the front of the guides 5. Mounted for vertical reciprocation within the guides 5 are the body portions 8 of suitable pressing members, said body portions being pivotally connected at their lower end as at 9 to the opposite ends of an equalizing frame 10, preferably oblong in plan, said frame being slotted in its center as at 11, and through said slots extends an operating lever or pedal 12 pivotally connected at one end to a rod 12 supported at its ends by the free ends of links 13 which are fulcrumed at their opposite ends to a base or fulcrum portion 14. The
transversely of pedal or lever 12 is provided with a longitudinal slot 15 in the region of its passing through the opening 11 and through said slot extends a suitable transverse member 16 connected to the frame 10 at opposite sides of said slot 11. The raising and lowering of the lever or pedal 12 in turn raises and lowers the equalizing frame 10 and the loose connection between the slot 15 and pin' 16 permits of a slight fulcrum or pivotal movement of the frame relatively to the path or movement of the lever, thus permitting the automatic adjustment of the pressing mem bers so that the shoes or arms 17 pivotally mounted as at 18 to the upper ends thereof and overhanging the positioned box will receive equal pressures regardless of the dif ference in height thereof. Suitable lugs 19 project on opposite ends of the frame 10 and in the same are carried adjusting screws 20 adapted to contact with the lower ends of the member 8 to limit the free lateral move ment of the frame relatively to said members. Suitable spaced guide members 21 and 22 are carried by the central support ing member 3 and between the same operates a guide pin 23 carried by the outer end of the lever or pedal 12. The guide member provided with a rack surface 24 for engagement by a pivotal pawl 25 carried on the lever or pedal 12, said pawl having a foot releasing member 26 which overlies a foot rest 27 on the free end of the pedal, a spring 28 normally maintaining the pawl in engagement with a rack surface 2a. A coiled spring 29 is employed for raising the presser arms and pedal or lever to the position as in Fig. 2 on the release of the pawl 25.
By my improved construction it will be apparent that the equalizing frame 10, permits of a limited independent movement of the presser members relatively to the'pedal or lever 12, thus compensating for an unevenness in height of thebox, to which the cover is to be applied and within which the contents are pressed. The adjusting members 20 limit the movement of the frame 10 relatively to the presser members and the shoes or arms 17 permit of a uniform power or force being applied to the box cover transversely of its end and which is desired to be secured in position on the box proper.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. In a box press, a pair of movable cover pressing members, a box support, a fulcrumed lever, a pressure equalizing frame capable of operation by said lever and of free lateral movement relatively thereto, a pivotal connection between said frame and each of said cover pressing members, andadjustable means cooperating with said frame and said pressing members for limiting the relative pivotal movement of the same. i
2. In a box press, a pair of cover pressing members, a guide for each of said members Copies of thief patent may be obtained for andrelatively to which the same are capable of vertical movement, a box support, a fulcrumed lever, a pressure equalizing frame capable of operation by said lever and of lateral movement relatively thereto, a pivotal connection between said frame and each of said cover pressing members and means for limiting the pivotal movement between said frame and said cover pressing members.
3. In a box press a box support, a pair of cover pressing members overhanging said support and movable to and from the same, an equalizing frame substantially oblong in plan and pivotally connected at its opposite ends to said pressing members, a threaded socket at each end of said frame and disposed with their bores longitudinally thereof, a threaded bolt adjustable within each of said sockets and one capable of co6pcrating with each of said pressing members for limiting the pivotal movement between the opposite end of said frame and each of said members, an operating lever extended at right angles to said frame and cooperating therewith for imparting movement thereto, and a connection between said lever and frame whereby the frame is capable of pivotal movement relatively to the lever and at right angles thereto.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I DONALD PARKER.
