To all whom it may concern:

- Be it known that 1, WILLIAM P. DEVINE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Dorchester, in the county of- Suffolk and'State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Shoe-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to buttons and particularly to that class of buttons commonly used on shoes, gaiters, etc., the body portions of'which are made of some hardened plastic material and which are provided with metal eyes secured to said body portions.

One object of'the present invention is to save material, the body portion of each button being provided with depressions on the outer and inner faces thereof, the outer depression having a central recess adapted to receive the head of a metal pin, the shank of which extends completely through said body portion and is bent to form an eye with its point embedded in the inner face of said body portion, thereby preventing the pin from turning therein.

Another object of the invention is to provide the end face of the body portion with an annular recess, the edge of the outer wall of which bears upon the material and there by prevents any portion of the inner face of the body portion contacting with the eye of the buttonhole and causing its stitches to be worn.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a disk inserted in the outer depression adapted to cover the head of the pin, this disk preferably being of a different color of material and adding materially to the artistic appearance of the button.

The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be thoroughly understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter given.

Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section of 'the same, the cutting plane being on line 3-3 on Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow thereon.

Similar characters designate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.

In the drawings, 10 represents a body portion of a button which is preferably-made of celluloid or some similar hardened plastic material. It is provided with a central opening 11 extending therethrough and its outer face has a depression 12 therein provided with a central recess 12 in which is positioned the head 13 of a pin, the shank of which extends through said central opening 11 and is bent over to form the eye 14. At one side of the central opening 11 is a recess 15 in which is positioned the point 16 of the shank of the headed pin 1314. The insertion of the point 16 in this depression 15 materially strengthens and stiffens' the eye 14 and makes it possible for said eye to be subjected to a greatly increased strain. At the same time the positioning of the point 16 in the recess 15 prevents the pin from turning in the central opening 11 extending through the body portion 10. The inner face of the body portion is provided with a hub 17 surrounded by an annular depression 18, the outer wall of which terminates at 19 forming a rounded annular edge considerably beyond the face of the hub portion 17 so that when the button is attached to a shoe or other article the face of the hub 17 will never contact with the stitches of the eye of the buttonhole and injure said stitches by rubbing action thereon.

By having the depression 12 in the outer face and the annular depression 18 on the inner face the body portion 10 may be made up from sheet celluloid and compressed into the form shown in the drawings, thereby saving considerable material in the manufacture of the buttons.

In the depression 12 is positioned a disk 20 of some material preferably distinctive in color or design from the body portion 10 of the button, the disk 20 serving to hide from view the head 13 of the pin 14 and 'at the same time add greatly to the ornamental appearance of the button.

By inserting disks 20 of diflerent artistic designs and colors a great variety of buttons may be made with the same style of body portion 10.

It is obvious that the body portion 10 may also be varied in color or provided with artistic designs.

The disk 20 may be of celluloid, leather, cloth, or any other flexible material, and is preferably formed over a circular metal plate 21, which before insertion is slightly crowned as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2,

The edge of the disk 20 is folded over the edge of the plate 21 and When forced into the depression 12 by a die the outer surface is fiattenedand the edge of the disk 20 jammed against the Wall of the depression 12 and locked securely in position.

It is believed that the many advantages of this invention Will be fully understood from the foregoing description.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A button comprising an annular body portion having a flat bottomed depression in its outerface having a vertical Wall. and provided with a central recess, a pin extending through said body portion with its head positioned in said recess and its shank bent tovform an eye, said head having a flat end flush With the bottom of said depression, a disk inserted in said outer depression and covering the head of said pin, and a metal Copies (if-this patent. may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner Washington, D. 03'. 7

A button comprising an annular body portion having a flat bottomed depression in its outer face having a vertical wall provided With a centralrecess, a pin extending through said body portion With its head positioned in and fitting said recess and its shank bent to form an eye, 'said head having a flat end flush With the bottom ofsaid depression, a flat disk inserted in, said outer depression and covering the head of said pin, and means for locking the edge-ofsaid disk against the wall ofsaid depression and With its outer face flush with the outer end of said body portion.
