REMOVABLE SEAT-BACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
' Application filed July 1, 1918. Serial No. 242,813.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK E. DEWEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles' and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Removable Seat- Backs, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to make a removable seat back for automobiles, so that the back of the front seat may be removed to form a bed, and my invention consists in the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an automobile having a front seat provided with a removable back in accordance with the principles of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical crosssection on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal seetional detail on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. A is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional detail on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
The back 1 of the front seat construction 2 is removable by raising the back straight up and then the back may be laid down, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, to form a connection between the front seat cushion 3 and the rear seat cushion 4, so that a bed may be made upon the three parts.
The sides 5 and 6 of the body of the automobile have inwardly projecting vertical abutments 7 and 8, and the removable back 1 is mounted between these abutments.
The abutment 7 is a rectangular timber having a flat straight inner face 9 and a heavy tongue 10 extending inwardly from the center of this face. A recess 11 is bored from the inner face 12 of the side 5 near the top before the abutment 7 is placed in position. A metal nut plate 13 is recessed into the face of the abutment 7 and secured in place by a screw 14. A rod 15 is adjustably screw-seated through the nut plate 13 into the opening 11 and said rod has an inclined upturned end 16. The tongue 10 is cut away to form a recess 17 for the end 16, said recess being large enough to allow the end 16 to rotate when the removable back 1 is out of place, so as to adjust the rod 15 in the nut plate.
The removable back 1 has a central portion 18 and strips 19 and 20 secured to the edges of the central portion and matching the abutments 7 and 8. A nut plate 21 is embedded into the face 22 of the strip 19 and secured in place by a screw 23, and a rod 24 is adjustably screw-seated through the upper end of the strip 19 and through the nut plate 21, said rod 24.- having a head 25 extending into the upper end of the tongue groove 26 and said head 25 having an opening 27 provided with an inclined side 28 to engage the upturned end 16. The tongue groove 26 is formed in the outer face of the strip 19 to receive the tongue 10.
In a like manner the rod 29 is mounted in the upper end of the abutment 8 and has an upturned end 30 extending into the groove 31 of the strip 20 and engaging an inclined opening in the head 32 extending from the rod 33 mounted in the upper end of the strip 20, and the tongue 34: extends from the abutment 8 into the groove 31.
When the back 1 is shoved down into place the upturned ends 16 and 30 pass through the grooves 26 and 31 and pass into the heads 25 and 32, and the inclined faces of the heads engaging the inclined ends 16 and 30 pull the sides 5 and 6 against the ends of the back 1 and hold the sides from spreading and also assist the tongues and grooves in holding the back from tipping backwardly under the pressure of the occupants of the front seat.
T bar binding strips 35 are attached in position to cover the joints between the ends of the removable back 1 and the inner faces of the abutments 7 and 8.
Thus I have produced a removable seat back construction for automobiles in which there are tongue and groove connections between the removable back and the sides of the automobile body and inclined faces for drawing the sides of the body against the ends of the removable back, so as to hold the sides from spreading.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. The combination with the sides of an automobile body and the front seat, of abutments fixed to the sides and extending inwardly, tongues extending inwardly from the abutments, rods fixed in the abutments and having inclined ends extending in the planes of the tongues; the upper ends of the tongues being cut away; a back section fitting between the abutments and having grooves to receive the tongues, and rods fixed in the upper parts of the back section and having heads extending into the grooves; said heads having inclined openings to re ceive the inclined ends of the rods so as to hold the sides from spreading.
2. The combination with the sides and front seat of an automobile body of a back section fitting between the sides along the 'adjustably mounted and having inclined ends to engage in the openings.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification.
FRANK E. DEWEY.
