Wikneoo HAROLD M. MURPHY, or SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE.
SAFETY-CAP FOR OIL-CANS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
Application filed March 27, 1918. Serial No. 225,086.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD M. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at So. Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Caps for Oil-Cans and the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to caps for cans and the like.
The object of this invention is to provide a safety cap which may be secured over the stopper and neck of a can thus preventing the stopper from being accidentally displaced when the can is being shipped or handled.
A further object of this invention is to provide a cap which may be placed over the stopper and neck of a can or the like and so secured thereto that the same could not be removed without detection by the owner.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings:
' Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved safety cap applied to the neck of a can or the like.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the cap.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body of a. can or the like, having the neck portion 2 which is provided with the usual head or flange 3, as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
My improved cap comprises in its construction the annular or cylindrical body 4. which body is closed at one end as at 5, and is provided adjacent its closed end with an expanded annular rib 6, the rib defining an interior groove 7 adapted to receive the flange 3 of the can. The walls of the body 4 are provided at diametrically opposite points with diametrically extending slits 8 which extend downwardly from the lower wall of the groove 7 and terminate into substantially inverted U-shaped cutout portions Qwhich permits the wall a to be spread outwardly and placed over the neck of a can thus forcing the flange or bead 3 into the groove 7 The lower edge of the body f is rolled outwardly and back upon itself to provide a bead 13 in which is located a wire 10. The ends of the wire 10 extend outwardly beyond the bead and are designated 11 and 12 and are adapted to hold the safety cap against accidental removal from the can neck.
The ends of the wire 11 and 12 are extended around the can neck and have their extreme ends twisted thus providing a looking means which prevents the cap from being removed by an unauthorized person. The vertically arranged slots 8 permit the 'body 4: to be swung over by the spreading of the body part so that the same may be placed over the can neck and positioning the bead 3 of the can into the groove 7 defined by the expanded ribs 6, thus the safety cap is positioned upon a can or the like. The wire is then placed about the can neck and its end portions twisted to effectively lock the safety can top in position.
Sealing wax or like material can be placed on thetwisted ends of the wire, thus preventing the cap from being removed and the contents of the can or the like, taken by an unauthorized person without detection.
What is claimed is:
1. A safety cap for cans and the like comprising a cylindrical body having one end .closed, said body provided near its closed end with an exterior annular rib defining an interior groove, the lower wall of said body provided at diametrically opposite points with cut-out portions and having vertically arranged slits communicating with the cutout portions to permit the body to be expanded and placed over the neck and stopper of a can or the like, and means connected at diametrically opposite points at the lower edges of the can body to secure the safety cap against removal from the can or the like.
2. The combination with a can or the like having a neck provided with a head, of a cap therefor, said cap comprising a body having one end closed, said body provided near its closed end with an outwardly expanded annular rib defining an interior groove, said body provided at its lower end at diametrica-lly opposite points with cutout portions terminating into vertical slits, said cutout portions and slits permitting the body to be expanded and placed over the neck and stopper of a can or the like and the bead of the can fitting in the groove defined by the rib of the body and flexible means connected to the lower edge of the body and adapted to be arranged around the neck of the can or the like for holding the cap against accidental removal therefrom.
3; A safety cap for cans or the like comprising a cylindrical body having one end closed, said body provided near its closed end With an annular exteriorly arranged rib defining an interior groove, the Wall of said body provided at diametrically opposite polnts With cutout portions terminating into vertlcal slits which permit the body to be spread and placed over the neck of a can or the like, and awvire connected to the lower edges of the body and arranged around the neck of a can or the like for securely holding the cap. against-accidental removal there-' from. In testimony whereof aff x my signature 1n presence of tWo wltnesses.
