DRAWING INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21
Application filed April 12 1918. Serial No. 228,224.
Be it known that I, WILKENS A. SCHENCK, a citizen of United States, residing at 4A N. Fourth street, Philadelphia of Philadelphia and State of in Drawing Instruments, of which the following is a specification. The invention relates ments, and more particularly to dividers or compasses, a drawing instrument that cannot readil tally signed with a view'to providing a stron durable article that can on account of its simplicity, parts, can be cheaply marketed.
Among other features,
stamped metal eiiectively employ the instrument purpose intended. comprehends a drawing instrument in which the parts after being ma and readily assembled without the require-- and to this end the ment of skilled labor, stamped metal and other parts are made to readily interfit, and thereby form an instrument that will have a neat and effective-an pearance.
In the further disclosure of the invention,- be had to the accompanying constituting a part of this spec1fi-- reference is to drawings, cation, in which similar characters of corresponding parts in a views, and in which- Figure refer- Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the instrument as shown in Fig. 1,
and taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional in the county 7 Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements to drawing instru-' and has for an object to provide can be cheaplyconstructed, will consist of few parts that become broken or accidendisassembled, the instrument being de-' e used for all kin swhich instruments of this charthe invention com-' prehends a drawing instrument in which the legs and other parts are preferably'ma'de of with a suitable self-centeringhead, if desired, that will enable the user to for the Further, the invention -passes around the bearing hea de, can be quickly 1 is a side elevation of the instrucentral portion of the yoke 16 extends beview of the instrument taken on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 55 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional on the line 6-6 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of one of the point-holding elements' I Referring more partic'ularly'to the views, the instrument in its entirety :is indicated by the numeral 10, and ismade up primarily of a plurality of legs 11, 12, "each formed of a single piece of stamped metal, which 'in cross section is U-shaped,
view taken .5
thus providing great strength, it being readily understood;
end' of the-leg 11 is formed with'abearing.
of the leg 12 is I head 13', and the upper end similarly formed with a bearing head A knob or holder 15 has suit'ablysecured thereon an inverted U-shaped yoke 16 which ds 13, 1411s.,
shown, and between the bearing heads'there is disposed a ball-bearing disk 17 provided with a plurality of openings 18 in which are disposed balls 19, said balls projecting from each side of the disk through the openv ings 18. to bear against the inner faces of.
the bearing heads 13, '14:, a screw 20 being arranged to pass-through one of thesides of the 3 010316 and then throughthe bearing head 13 'and' disk the other bearing of the voke 16. Thus the legs 11. 12 will be pivoted at'their upper ends and'can readily be separated. due to the ball-bearing action 17, and thence through head 14 onthe other side. I
of the balls 19. In order'to maintainthe handle or knob 15 in an the disk 17 is formed with project1ons 20 providing a grooved portion 21, and by reference to the views it will be seen that the upright position, 1
tween the projections 20 and lies in the will V 5. In combination with the legs of a draW- of said legs, and clamping the points in said ing instrument, said legs being bifurcated at point-holding devices, and finger grips on 10 their lower ends, point-holding devices, each said point-holding devices for adjusting the formed of a single piece of U-shaped matesame to different angles relative to the legs rial, said point-holding devices fitting beto which they are attached.
tween the bifurcated portions of said legs, In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. fastening elements clamping said pointholding devices between bifurcated portions WILKENS A. SCHENOK.
