Description

B. GOOCH.
MACHINE SKID. APPLICATION FILED MAYIS. m8.
Pat'nted J an. 21,1919,

MACHINE-SKID.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 15, 1918. Serial No. 234,819.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERT Goocn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnston City, in the county of Williamson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine-Skids; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a skid adapted to be used in moving heavy machinery particularly on inclines or where it is necessary to move the same, and thls applies particularly to mining machinery, from one level to another and where the distance is insufficient to justify the use of hoisting or hauling mechanism, and a further object of the invention is to provide a means for this purpose which may be operated readily by the ordinary wor an or mechanic and which will retain the machine in the desired position or at any point in its movement without employing auxiliary devices for chocking or anchoring.
Further objects and advantages will appear hereinafter, it being understood that changes in form and proportion, in adapting the device to various uses, may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawin Figure 1 is a s1de view of the device showingha claw bar in operative relation therew1t F ig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same showing the follower in side elevation.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a portion of the device.
The skidding device embodying the invention consists essentially of a track member 10 having lateral guide walls or flanges 11 and a ratchet toothed floor forming a rack bar 12, and a follower 13 having a ratchet toothed base 14 and side walls 15 connected at one end by a transverse member 16, forming a fulcrum or bearin In connection with these elements there is used a claw bar 17 of the ordinary construction, the nose 18 thereof being adapted toengage the teeth of the rack bar in the bottom of the guide member while the head bears agalnst the member 16 so as to afford the NOR 0F ONE-HALF To ROBERT M..
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.-
leverage necessary to advance the follower and the machine engaged thereby in the desired directiomsuch advance obviously being conducted by a step by step movement.
The guide member may be disposedat any desired angle according to the required direction of movement of the machine, and when the latter has reached the desired elevation, or any intermediate point, the engagement of the follower with rack on the bottom of the guide member will serve to lock the parts in their adjusted relation so that the machine is held firmly in place without the use of auxiliary anchoring means.
As Wlll be obvious, an apparatus such as described may readily form a part of the usual equipment of a mine or machine used in a mine or otherwise, and may readily be transported from place to place and applied without preparation when it is desired to move a machine to a greater or less extent, and particularly when it is necessary to move the same upon an inclined surface or from one elevation to another.
It will also be obvious that the movement of the follower in the uide member is definitely controlled by tie side walls of the latter with which the side surfaces of the former are substantially in contact, there being only a sufiicient interval to provide for relative movement without undue friction.
It will also be obvious from the foregoing description that the follower is reversible in position with relation to the guide member, the inclined edges 19 thereof permitting freedom of movement of the claw bar, and in practice the follower may be stamped from plate steel of a suitable gage and subsequently folded or bent as shown so that the cost of manufacture is relatively minimized. The abrupt or perpendicular edges 20 are placed a ainst any suitable or available portion of t e base of the machine to be moved, so that the latter slides on the upper edges of the guide flanges 11 as the follower advances.
Having claimed 1s:
1. A skidding apparatus having a laterally flan ed guide member provided with a toot ed bottom, and a coiiperating follower disposed between said guide walls and havdescribed the invention, what'is 2. A device for the purpose described having a guide member provided with parallel side walls and a toothed bottom, and a follower mounted between said side walls and having a toothed base for engagement with the bottom of the guide member, said follower being provided with corresponding sidewalls 10 provided at one end with abrupt bearing edges and a connecting fulcrum member.
3. A device for the purpose described consisting of a parallel walled guide member having a ratchet toothed bottom and a foll5 lower having side walls disposed to operate adjacent to the inner surfaces of the walls of the guide member and provided with a ratchet toothed base for engagement .with the bottom of said guide member, the teeth on the bottom of the guide member forming 20 seats for successive engagement by a claw bar and the follower having a transverse fulcrum member, to provide a bearing for the claw bar.
