To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that T, ANTONI TnUsrroN, a citizen of Russia, and residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State lof Michi'- gan, have invented a new and Trnproved Lock for Pockets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to locks for pockets of various kinds, hand bags, purses and other receptacles, and its object is to provide a device of this character with aseries of easily adjustable depressible keys which inay be placed in two different positions, in one of which, when depressed, they tend to release the locking bar of the lock and in the other to secure said bar, so that unless the arrangement of these keys islknown, the receptacle to which the lock is attached cannot be opened.

This invention consists of the `details of construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing and particularly pointed out in the claims. l

ln the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of this improved lock `attached to a pocket within another pocket of a garment. Fig. 2 is a section on 4the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. The lock itself consists of a back-plate i1,"

a front-plate 2, a series of depressible keys 3 having springs 4 on their shanks. The backplate may be formed with a series of holes 5 so that it may be secured to a portion of the receptacle to be protected by the lock.

l The back plate may have tongues 6 to secure it to the front plate.

The front plate consists of the vertical nnperforate strips 7 and 8, the horizontal strips 9, 10 and 11, and the vertical rear strip 12 which is engaged by the tongues 6 on the back plate and which is formed with slots 13 to receive the shanks 15 of the keys and with slots 14 to receive the up-turned ends 16 of these shanks when turned as is the key C in Fig. 3. The top strip 9 is slotted in from the rear edge to receive the upper ends of the shanks 15 of the keys, which Shanks are held in these slots and in the slots 13 by means of the back plate. The

vis provided with curved slots 17 and continuations of the slots 13 in the strip 12. The slots 17 join the vertical slots 19 in the strip 12. The strip 11 is shown in plan in Fig. 5 and is provided with continuations oi' the slots 13 and 14 in the strip 12 and with holes 18 near the front edge. The keys are preferably provided with buttons 20 at their upper ends and with side fingers 21 which are at ninety degreesl from the plane of' the upturned ends 16.

To `assemble the lock, the buttons 19 are secured to the keys 3 and the springs 4 are slipped down onto the up-turned ends 16 of the shanks and then up onto the shanks 15. The keys are then placed into the short slots in the strip 9 and into the slots 13 and 14 in. the strips 10, 11 and 12. The back plate is then secured in position by bending the tongues `6 down onto the strip 12. The lingers 21 are now all over the front ends of the slots 17 in the strip 10 and the holes 1S in the strip 11. Those keys that are to be used for locking are now depressed one at a tinie until the end 16 of each is below the strip 11, which brings the finger 21 into the curved slot 17. The key is `then turned until the `finger 21 is against the back plate which brings the end 16 below the hole 18 in the strip 11. When the key is now released it will be inoved to the position of the keys B and D in Figs. 1 and 2.

The lock may be provided with a bail 22 having eyes at its ends and secured to the fabric of the pocket or other receptacle in any desired manner. Tt may be secured to the lock by means of a down-turned lip 23 formed on the rear edge of the strip 9 which thus secures this bail and the upper edge of the back-plate securely to the lock.

The front bail 24 is connected at its ends to the ends of the bail 22 and the Jfront 25 of the pocket or other receptacle is secured to this front bail in any desired manner. A rearwardly off-set portion 26 of this bail is adapted to enter the recess between the strips 10 and 11, the remainder of the bail lying tight against the outwardly bent portions of the bail 22. The oflset portion 26 or locking bar may be pressed against the beveled upper ends of the up-turned ends 16 of the shanks 15 of the keys B and D, and depress them sufficiently to slip past them, after which these keys will spring back up and secure the locking bar in position.

When the pocket is to be opened, kthe. keys B and D alone must be depressed in order to free the latch. If either of the keys A and C is depressed, the linger 21 thereof will be forced down in front of the locking bar 26 and hold it in position and prevent the pocket being opened. Unless the correct combination is known, the lock cannot beopened and the combination can be changed instantly at any time by depressing and turning the keys.

If desired, the material of the receptacles may be so constructed that it cannot readily be cut, as by making it of two thicknesses 27 and 28 of cloth with a webbing 30 of metal between them. The device is adapted for an auxiliary .pocket within the usual outer pocket 32 of a garment. The number of locking members may be varied as desired and the details may all be changed by those sln'lled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the following claims.

I claim 1. The combination of a hinged bail secured to one portion of a receptacle and formed into a locking bar, a stationary bail secured to another portion of the receptacle and a front plate connected thereto which front plate is formed with a recess to receive the locking bar and with a horizontal groove parallel to said recess, a series of vertically slidable keys mounted in the front plate and having shanks extending across said groove, and springs within the groove mounted on said shanks, said keys being formed with upturned hooks to engage the locking bar when the keys are in elevated position and also formed with down-turned lingers to engage the locking bar when the keys are turned ninety degrees and then depressed.

2. The combination of a front plate formed of sheet metal into three parallel strips and two parallel strips joining opposite edges of the intermediate strip to the adjacent strips, keys mounted in slots in said strips and comprising shanks having up-turned ends and down-turned lingers, springs on the shanks above the intermediate horizontal strips, and a locking bar adapted to enter the space below the intermediate horizontal strip and engage said upeturncd ends and 'be engaged by the down-turned lingers.

3. The combination of a lock secured to one side of a pocket and comprising a series of horizontal and vertical strips and keys mounted in slots in said strips, springs to hold the locking ymembers elevated, a backplate to hold the keys in position, said locking members comprising vertical Shanks having their lower ends turned up Sulliciently to normally extend up across between two of the horizontal strips below the lower strip and also formed with downturned `fingers which will extend down across between these two horizontal strips from above the upper strip when the keys are depressed, the lower of said strips being formed with openings to permit the keys to be turned to carry the up-turned ends or down-turned fingers into operative position, and a locking bar secured to the other side ofthe pocket and adapted to be engaged by the keys.
