To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Panna P. FLoUnNoY, a citizen ofthe United States, residingat Bethesda, in` the county", of Montgomery and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Devices for Fil." 1g Fountain-Pens, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to means which may be vquickly and easly'applied 'to all the eX- isting forms. of fountain pens, and lill or replenish the writing"a `fluid within the barrel of the pen. e
The objects of my invention are for the purpose of forming a device of the character abovev indicated, and isintended to form a means by which a fountain pen reservoir may be filled without unscrewing and sepa'- i rating-'the feeding attachment in which the pen point is'fastened from' the ink reservoir or barrel of the pen, and also without removing the pen point from the feeder or reversing the ink'stand ,or other container from which the ink is to be withdrawn and forced into the barrel or reservoir of the fountain pen.

Referring to the drawings a is a hollow compressible rubber bulb which is provided with an extension or mouth piece D. also of rubber and provided with outwardly tapered conical or fil-ring opening receive point end of a fountain pen, as shown in Fig. 2. The operation of the invention isas follows: V
The pen 'peint C having been securely and tightly fastened into the flaring opening b", as shown in Fig. 2, the stopper al is raised out of the opening in the neck of the ink container or bottle B, until the annular recess i isin communication with the outside air.

'l/Yhenthe bulb a is released from pressure and Aallowed to expand, some of the air within the hollow en barrel is drawn out, and some of the inl; bottle B is drawn up to lill the vacuum formed in thebulb a by its ex ansion. This operation of compressing ana releasir'r the in the container or bulb a is repeated, drawing up more ink and expelling more air from the pen barrel, and the pen point C being slightly depressed below the horizontal position, the ink Will pass down into the pen barrel to iill the increasingly perfect Vacuum therein, While the air being lighter than the ink rises and passes into the hollow bulb a, and is eventually by repeated compressing and releasing of the bulb, forced asy previouslyl explained through the passage e and tube e and up through the ink, and finally escapes into the atmosphere by the vents or depressions f, f, and recess z', until the ypen barrel is entirely filled with ink, and the gurgling sound produced by the passage of the outgoing air through the ink ceases, indicating that the filling of the pen is completed. After this operation and after the withdrawal of the pen from the mouth piece 6, the pen is ready for use.
The object of providing an annular recess c', with a series of depressions f', is for the purpose of sub dividing and distributing the outgoing air` entirely aroundthe stopper d and prevent any great air pressure at any one depression or vent f, which would tend to squirt or force out suddenly any ink which might lodge or collect, if a single (lepression f were employed. The recess 'e'. extends entirely around the stopper and of a depth as shown for the purpose of acting as a reservoir to receive any ink which might be forced through the depressions or vents f, thereby preventing any ink. from being thrown out from the stopper or bottle during the compression of -bulb Z; and filling of the pen barrel A.
From the foregoing disclosure of the construction and operation of the device, it will be seen that all of the advantages and functions set up in the statementV of invention are fully carried out, and it will also be understood that many modifications will readily suggest themselves Without departing from the spirit and essential features of my improvements.
What I claim is: l. A device for filling fountain pens cornprising a base section provided with external.
