To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. JOHNSON, a cwitrizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roller Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
rIhis invention relates to improvements in roller side bearings.
- One obj ect of this invention is tO provide an anti-friction roller side bearing, more especially adapted for railway cars, the side bearing being so designed that the antifriotion roller will return to normal position under the influence of gravity after each actuation with a minimum amount ofv friction.
Another and more specific object Of the invention is to provide an anti-friction roller side bearing wherein the anti-friction roller is suspended on floating runways but with the parts so arranged that when the side bearing is brought into action, the roller is placed under direct compression without imposing any load on the journals or trunnion supports.
In the drawing forming a part of this specilication, Figure 1 is a vertical, sectional view, taken transversely of the body and car holsters of a railway car and showin my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a vertical, sectional view, taken substantially on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1. And Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of one of the floating runways. Y
In said drawing, 10 denotes a portion of atruck bolster of a oar and 1l a portion of an Opposed body bolster, it being understood that my improved side bearing is applied in the usual manner at the ends of the holsters on each side of the center pin by which the holsters are connected.
As shown, the improved side bearing includes a base or retaining member A, an anti-friction roller B, runways C-C and springs D-D.
The retaining member A is preferably in the form of a, casting having a lower horizontal bearing wall 12, vertically extending end walls lil-13' and vertically entendingV spaced side walls lA-lla rl`he Casting may be secured to the holsters by any suitable means, suoli as the rivets 15, which pass through ears or lugs 16 formed integrally with the casting A.
Fach side wall 14 of the base casting A is recessed on its inner face, as indicated at`17, the 'recesses being so formed as to provide downwardly facing shoulders 18-18 near each end thereof. A floating runway C is disposed in each of the recesses 17, each runway C being of a length to move freely within the recess 17 but limited in its upwardY movement therein by engagement with Vsaid shoulders 18. Each runway C is of hollow formation and is adapted to have the free ends 19-19 of a bowed spring D seated therewithin, as clearly shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The bowed springs l) bear at their bottom ends on the lower walls 2O of the recesses 17 and said springs are held against lateral olis-vv placement by any suitable means, such as the danges 21.

In actual practice, the roller'Ii will be supported or suspended by the trunnions 22 from the floatingrunways C and out of engagement with the bottom bearing plate 12 and also out of engagement with the upper body bolster 11. 'llhe springs D need be of only sufficient strength to sustain the wei eht of the roller I3, and do not have any ot er function in returning the roller Il to normal position other than elevating therunwa s C after the latter have been depressed an the pressure removed from the roller. When the side bearing is brought into action, the roller B will, of course, be forced downwardly into engagement with the bottom bearing l2 and rolled to either side of normal, depending upon the relative movements of the body and truck holsters. rI`he dotted lines in Fig. 1 designate the position of the anti-friction rOllerB at the end of its travel to the right, as viewed in said ligure. As the roller B is moved to either side of normal.. it is evident that the corresponding ends of the runways C will be depressed against the action of the light springs lll. Il the pressure is now removed from the roller assuming the latter in the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1, the roller B will be ele,
vated due tothe expansion of the springs D and the roller will then return to normalv central positionv under the influence of gravity since the trunnions 22 will roll down the inclined surfaces 23 of the runways.
Withthe construction above described, the anti-friction roller is placed under direct compression when in operation and the trunriio'ns` 22 and runways C are not required to sustain any of the load, ashas heretofore been customary in varioustypes of anti-friction roller side bearings. Furthermore during thereturn of the parts to normal, the roller is left entirely free of engagement with either the bottom bearing 12 or the upper bolster 11 so that it can readily roll back to central position under the influence of gravity with a minimu of friction. As will be understood, the Vertical height of the runways C yis made such that the latter are never brought down into engagement with the bottom walls 2O of the recesses 17 so that the runways C and springs D can be made unusually light.
I claim:
1. In an anti-friction bearing, the combination with .a retaining member, of yfloating runways yieldingly carried by said. member, a lower bearing surface, and an anti-friction roller normally supported on trunnions bearing on said runways and out of engagement with said bearing surface, said runways be ing depressible to permit the roller to engage with said bearing surface when the bearing is in operation and thereby place the roller under direct compression, while the trunnions are free from load. A
2. In an anti-friction bearing, the combination with a retaining member having an .integral bottom bearing wall and side walls,
of runways having inclined upper surfaces mounted in the side walls of said member, an anti-friction roller having trunnions engaging said inclined surfaces of the runways, and spring means for normally holding said runways in elevated position and thereby the roller out of engagement with the bearing wall said runways beingl' depressible to permit the roller to engage said bottom bearing wall.
3. In an anti-friction bearing, the combi nation with a retaining casting having an integral bottom bearin wall and upstandng side walls, each of said side wallsbeing recessed on its inner face and the recesses pro,- Vided with` upper shoulders, of a runway mounted in each recess and limited in its upward movement by said shoulders, a spring` for supporting each runway in its uppermost position, each runway having its lupper face inclined upwardly in each dig'ection from the center thereof, and an antifriction roller having trunnions supported by said runways, the anti-friction roller being normally held out of engagement with the bottom bearing wall of the retaining member, the runways being fdepressible as the roller is moved to eitherside of normal to permit the roller to engage said bottom bearing wall and adapted to elevate the roller when pressure is removed from the latter and thereby permit the rollerto return to,'central position under the influence of gravity and while freely supported by said trunnions. j
