Be it'known that I, GEORGE O. AMLUNG,

' a citizen of the United States, residing at .Buckhannon, in the county of Upshur and State of WestVirginia, have invented certain new and usefull m-provements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates. to games and toys, and the object thereof is to provide a toy to enable a boy to acquire skill in shooting either with marbles or a pop gun, and at'the same time gratify his patriotism of playing a war game.

Another object is to provide a toy ofthis character having a target which, when hit, will disappear, and an opening be uncovered, through which another target is disclosed, and simultaneously a, flag or other symbol automatically raised.

Another object is to so construct a device of this character that the parts may be reset by a simple pull on a cord.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the-invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the embodiment illustrated, the toy constituting this invention comprises a casing 1 representing a German castle or fort,

with openings 2 and '3 in the front wall .thereof, said openings being arranged diagonally opposite and one being covered by a closure 4, bearing on its upper face the representation of the German flag, while the other has a closure 5. The closure 4 extends laterally from an upright post or shaft 6 rotatably mounted in the bottom 7 and in Specification of Letters Patent.

when turned in one direction the closure 4 will swing over and close the opening 3 and when opened by the swinging of the shaft in the opposite direction, the flag contained on the upper face of said closure 4 will disappear.

The closure 5 is hinged at its lower edge in suitable bearings at opposite sides of the opening 2 to swing downwardly when open flat. against the upper face of the partition 8 so as to permit an unobstructed view through said opening for a purpose presently to be described. A weight 5 is carried by the free upper end of the closure 5 on its rear face and causes said closure'to drop downward into open position when not held up by means to be described. A

' cord or other suitable flexible element 10 connects the front faces of the pintle of the closure 5 with the upper end 9 of the shaft 6 extending under said pintle so that the turning of said shaft in one direction will wrap cord 10' around said shaft end and exert a pull on this cord for raising the closure 5 into upright operative position as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 5.

A rotary element 11 is pivotally mounted on the inner face of the front wall of the casing 1 preferably adjacent the open ng 5 and is made in the form of a disk aving a .radially extending socket 12 to receive the flag staff 13 which carries the fiag 14, preferably a United States flag. A cord or other flexible element 15 connects the upper end 9 of shaft 6 with the disk member 11 so that when the shaft is rotated by the opening of the closure 4, a pull will be imparted to cord 15 owing'to its partial winding on said shaft and the flag carrying socket 12 will be swung upward into vertical position asshown in dotted lines in Fig. 5 and when the shaft is swung in the opposite direction on the closing of the closure 4, slack in cOId 15 will occur and the flag WilldI'OP by gravity into the position shown in Fig. 3. A keeper 16 is mounted on the inner face of the front wall of the casing 1 to form a guide for the flag carrying member 11 to prevent it from moving laterally and one arm of said keeper limits the upward- The horizontal partition 8 has a longitudinally extending slot 19 therein arranged opposite the opening 2 in the front wall of the casing and this slot has at one end an inwardly extending lug 20 designed to form a support for the movable target 21. ,This movable target 21 is preferably made in the form of a U-boat pivoted at one end between the side walls of the slot 19 opposite that having the lug 20, the slot being sufiiciently wide to permit said target to drop down wardly when its other end'is pushed off the 111 20 by a blow against its front face.

In the use of this toy, the parts being in the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 to G, the closure 4 bearing the German flag is displayed in front of the opening 3, and the opening 2 is covered by the closure 5, while the U-boat or target 21 is in elevated position shown clearly in Fig. ,4.

When the flag carrying closure 4 is hit by a' marble or other pro]ectile from a pop gun of themarksman or otherwise, it will swing inwardly into the casing 1 out of sight and turn shaft 6. Simultaneously the cord 10 connected with closure 5'will be slackened and the closure will drop by gravity into open position while at the same time a pull will be exerted on cord 15 and the flag 1 1 raised over the castle. When this operation has taken place, the U -boat 21 will be displayed through theopening 2 and the marksman then shoots through said opening, and if he hits the boat, it will be moved laterally off the support 20 and dropbelow the partition 8 representing a dive or sinking of the boat.

To restore the parts to normal position readyfor the shot of the next marksman, the U-boat is lifted manually and positioned with its free end resting on the lug 20, and a pull exerted on a cord 22 which is connerted with the lower end of the shaft 6 and extends through the front wall of the casing 1 will operate to turn shaft 6 thereby swinging the closures 4 and 5 over their openings 3 and 2 and the flag 24 into the lowered position shown in Fig. 3, and the device is then ready for the next operation. An opening 23 1s provided at the lower neeaoaa part of the rear wall of the casing for the passage out of the projectiles, used in playing the game.

As seen in Fig. 2, the upper end of the casing is open to afford access to the target 21, but obviously a removable roller may be provided if found desirable or necessary.

The foregoing description and the drawingshave' reference to what may be considered the preferred or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, etc., as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the claimed invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a toy'of the class described, a supporting structure 'having openings in one wall thereof, a downwardly opening closure for one of said openings, a laterally opening closure for the other opening, a shaft on which said laterally opening closure is carried, and a connection between said shaft and thedownwardly opening closure whereby the turning of the shaft will operate to move both closures simultaneously for either opening or closing the openings.

'2. In a toy of the class described, a casing having openings in one wall, a vertically disposed shaft mounted in said casing and adapted to revolve therein, a downwardly opening closure for one of said openings, a closure extending laterally from said shaft for the other opening, and a flexible element connecting said shaft with the downwardly opening closure whereby the turning of the shaft will operate to simultaneously open and close said closures.

3. In a toy of the class described, a casing having openings in its front wall arranged in spaced relation, closures for said opening,

one of said closures having a target on its outer face, a connection between said closures whereby they are operated synchronously, and a target arranged within said casing in alinement with one of said openings so that when said closures are opened the inner target will be exposed.

4. In a toy of the class described, a casing having openings in its front wall arranged in spaced relation, closures for said openings, one of said closures having a target on its outer face, a connection between said closures whereby they are operated synchronously, and a target arranged within said casing in alinement with one of said openings so that when said closures are opened the inner target will be exposed,-said inner target being mounted for vertical movement and adapted to drop downwardly when hit.

5-. In a toy of the class described, a casing having openings in its front wall arranged in spaced relation, closures for said openings, one of said closures having a target on its outer face, a connection between said closures whereby they are operated synchronously, and a target arranged within said casing in alinement with one of said openings so that when said closures are open the inner target will be exposed, said inner target being pivotally mounted at one end to drop downwardly into said casing when hit, and a lug for supporting the free end of said' target to hold it in exposed position. 6. A toy of the class described comprising a casing having an opening in one wall, a partition arranged in said casing and provided with a slot, a target mounted to move through said slot to permit it to drop out of sight when hit, and means for supporting it in elevated position;

7. A toy of the class a casing having an opening in one wall, a partition arranged in said casing and provided with a slot, a target mounted to move through said slot to permit it to drop out of sight when hit, and a lug arranged at one si e of said slot to support the free end of said target to hold it in raised operative position.

8. In a toy of the class described, a supporting structure, a vertical shaft mounted for rotary movement in said structure, a laterally extending element carried by said described comprising member mounted in said casing,

shaft, a bin structure an connected with said shaft to be moved on the turning thereof, and a cord connected with said shaft and extending beyond said structure and adapted by a pull exerted thereon to turn said shaft for actuating said elements connected therewith.

9. In a toy of the class described, a casing having a horizontal partition therein, a vertical shaft mounted to turn in the bottom of said casing and in said partition with its upper end projected above said artition, said casing having openings in its ront wall above and below said partition, a closure for the lower opening carried by said shaft, a closure for the upper opening hinged to swing downwardly, a connection between said upper closure and shaft to provide for its simultaneous actuation with the lower closure, a vertically movable flag carrying and a connection between said member and shaft whereby the turning of the shaft will operate to open said closures and to swing said shaft carrying member into upright position.
