To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, I/VALTER R. PATTER- soN, a citizen of the United States, .and a resident of Seattle, in the county of vKing and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel-Savers.
This invention relates to fuel savers, and has. for its principal object to provide an improved and novel device for admitting .air to the manifold of a gasolene engine;
to provide a device of the class briefly described which is automatically operated by thesuction of pistons; to provide a means which is adjustable for regulating the admission of air to the said manifold.
Other objects will appear as my invention is more fully explained in the followm ing specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to drawings Figure l is a centril cross-sectional view of my device shown attached to a fragment of a manifold. Fig. 2 is a plan view of same with parts omitted.
Referring more particularly to the drawings numeral 1 indicates a fragment of a manifold through the side of which my de vice is passed. My device consists of an outer casting 2| which is provided with threaded shank 3, at its lower end, and an internally threaded ring il, at its upper end. A perforated bridge 5 is located near the lower portion of the casting. A plug, 6, screws into the top of the casting 2, yand is provided with openings 7, for the admission of air, and with indented edges, 8. A valve plate 9, takes bearing against the underside of tap or plug 6. Valve plate 9 is provided with a downwardly extending stem which passes through an opening in bridge 5. A spring 11 normally holds valve plate 9 firmly against the under face of plug G. The suction or vacuum inthe manifold 1 holds valve plate 9 from an engagement with the under side of cap 6 and thereby admits air around the edges of the cap. The air is then sucked through the opening in bridge 5 into the manifold. A spring clip 12 is secured to the outside of. casting 2, and engages one of the depressions in the edge 8 of the plug 6, thereby holding the said plug against rotation. The position of the plug, and consequently the resistance of the spring 11 may be varied by raising or lowering the plug which is set to the casting 2. My device is designed to admit air-to the mixture under the influence of the suction created by the engine pistons.
While I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention I am aware that many minor changes therein will read ily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I therefore desire to avoid being limited to the exact form shown and described except as pointed out in the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
A device of the character described, comprising a manifold pipe, a hollow casing communicating with the manifold pipe, said casing having internal threads at its upper end and a guide near its lower end, a flatvalve having a stem which extends through the guide, the diameter 0f the flat valve being less than the inner diameter of the casing to form a passage, a spring between the guide and the valve, a cap formedin its top with openings and provided with an externally threaded depending flange which engages the threaded upper end of the cap, the lower edge 0f the flange on the cap engaging the top of the valve near the edge of the latter to adjust the tension of the spring and to normally shut olf communication between the atmosphere and the interior of the casing, the space formed between the top of the valve and the cap within the flange forming a chamber, the valve being opened by suction created in the manifold to draw air through the openings in the cap and the chamber and the passage to the manifold.
