EDWIN M. GOLDSMITH, 0F -PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 FRIED- BERG'ER-AARON MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA,
A CORPORATION OF FENNSYLVANIA.
CONTAINER FOR TOILET PREPARATION S.
Application filed May 8, 1918. Serial No. 233,234.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN M. GOLDSMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Containers for Toilet Preparations, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invent-ion is to provide a container for a plurality of toilet preparations, such as tooth powder, face powder, shaving powder and the like. It is especially intended for the use of travelers and soldiers, the more specific object being to dispense with the necessity of packing and unpacking, and carrying within the narrow confines of a traveling bag,a variety of different cans and bottles containing as many different kinds of toilet powders, one or more of which tend to'become lost, misplaced or left behind, and which, 'in the aggregate, occupy considerable space in a grip or suitcase. The more specific object of my invention is to so construct such a multiple unit container that it will present the general appearance of an ordinary container and 'be capable of standing on end in the ordinary way, but which is reversible in the sense that it will have neither top nor bottom, and the principle of construction of which is such that the relative volumes of the sub-containers for the respective preparations may be varied in accordance with the different quantities thereof .which are likely to be used within a given time.
Two embodiments of my invention are shown in the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 being respectively a vertical section and a plan of the simplest form,.and Figs. 3 and 4 being respectively a vertical section and cross section of another form.
The embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises an originally open-ended body a and duplicate end heads 6 and c; the heads being secured to the body in any conventional way. It is important, however, that each head shall have, or be surrounded by, an annular flange 03 so as to present a sunken or recessed face for the reception of a movable closure. In the drawings I have shown this closure as comprising a centrally piv- Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
tition h which is located nearer one head than the other and which provides two compartments or chambers z and of unequal capacity. The construction described permits the container to be stood on either end,
so that it may be said to have neither top nor bottom, but to have only ends, either of which may serve as a supporting bottom.
To avoid danger of the loss of the contents.
from either chamber which, at any time, may be the lower one. I provlde, for each closure, a spring 7'; which may be arranged in .any suitable way to normally hold the same closed. In Fig. 2, this spring is shown as of the leaf variety, one end being secured to the head and the other to an arm m projecting from the disk. TJWO similar and oppositely extending arms m and n are shown, each being so shaped as to adapt it to easy manipulation by the finger, a stop 0 being secured to the head in such position as to engage one of the arms when the disk has been turned into position to cause the orifices f and g to register,'the spring turning the disk to normally rest against another stop ;0
to bring the holes out of register, when the finger pressure is released.
In Figs. 3 and 4 one side of the container at is recessed at g to provide room for the insertion of a third turnable disk-shaped closure 1', which is provided with holes 8, adapted to register with holes t in the bottom of the recess. Two transverse partitions 0 are provided, one on one side and the other on the other side of the recess, thereby providing three independent compartments m, y and a in the container for the reception of as many different kinds of powder.
Having now-fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Let ters Patent is:
1. A multiple unit toilet container comprising a body, end heads provided with perforations, rims one surrounding each head, closures one applied exteriorly to each end head, and movable into position to either close or'open said perforations, each closure having a, maximum thickness not exceeding the height of the'oorresponding rim,- and means within the body of the container dividing the same into chambers closed from each other and communicating respectively with the perforations in the respective end heads.
2. A multiple unit toilet' container comprising a body, end heads provided with perforations, rims one surrounding each head, closures one applied exteriorly to each end head, and movable into position to either close or open said perforations, each closure having a maximum'thickness not exceeding the height of the corresponding rim, and means within the'body of the container dividing the same into separate and independent compartments of different volume.
3. A multipleunit toilet container comprising a .body, end heads provided with perforations, rims one surrounding each head, closures one applied exteriorly to each end head, and movable into position to either close or open said perforations, each closure havin "a maximum thickness not exceeding the helght of the corresponding rim, means within the body of the container dividing the same into chambers closed from each other and communicating respectively with the perforations in the respective end heads, and a sprin for each closure normally holding it close and preventing leaking of the contents of the chamber which in either given upright position of the, container is the lower one.
4:. A multiple unit toilet container comprising a body, end heads provided with perforations, runs one surrounding each head, movable closures one applied to each end head, a depression in the side of the body, said depression havin its base perforated, a closure containe within said depression, and cross-partitions within the container on opposite sides of said depresend and side closures adapted to close and Y open the end and side perforations respectively, and means with the container dividing it into separate and independent compartments communicating respectively with the end and side perforations.
In testimony of which invention, I have hereunto set .my hand, at Philadelphia, Pa, on this 6th day of May, 1918.
