ADHESIVE-TAPE MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
Application filed February 18, 1918. Serial No. 217,896.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, THOMAS T. MCGUIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at C0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adhesive-Tape Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus for supporting and dispensing adhesive tape and like materials, and has for its object to provide a simple and efl lcient device wherein a reel of tape may be rotatably supported and to provide cooperative means for moistening the adhesive surface of the tape as the latter is withdrawn from the reel.
Another'object of the invention is to provide a shearing device upon the apparatus and to locate said device in spaced relation from a structure for exerting special tension upon the tape so as to guide the latter over a moistening roller, whereby the sheared end of the tape may be conveniently grasped to effect a further withdrawal of the tape from the reel structure.
A further object of the invention resides in an apparatus ofthe above character possessing substantial and sanitary features of construction, and wherein the font for supplying the roller with moisture will be constantly covered so as to prevent the arising of odors from fluid contained within said font.
With these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention accordingly consists in the novel features of construction, combination of elements, and arrangements of parts hereinafter fully described and of the scope thereof indicated in the claims hereunto anneexd.
In the drawing, wherein has been shown of the invention, the improved tape supporting and dispensing apparatus A, comprising the preferred form of the invention, consists of a body gear formed in the nature of an integral casting. The latter is formed to provide a central, longitudinal extending opening 2, from the side walls of which depend bearings for the reception of the shaft 3 of a reel drum 4, and upon which drum is mounted a reel of adhesive tape 5. The tape may be employed for any suitable purpose, and is usually utilized in securing or fastening packages in lieu of string or cord, the
. tape as usual having the under surface thereof provided with a suitable adhesive, which may be moistened and applied to the desired places.
i The forward end of the body 1 is reducedto provide a roller receiving well 6, in which is rotatably supported a porcelain or glass roller 7, which latter being considerably wider than the'tape 5. The roller is provided with an axial shaft 8, and has the extremities thereof positioned within sockets 9 formed in the side walls 10 of the well, I this construction permits the roller to freely revolve. Water or other like fluid is supplied to the well in abundant quantities by providing the sides of the body 1 with a plurality of spaced water containing compartments 11, which are in communication as at 12 with the well 6, thus insuring an adequate supply of water for effecting the successful operation of said roller.
The rear wall of the well 6 terminates at its upper end in a ledge 13, over which the free extremity of the tape reel passes while turned over the roller 7. This extremity of the reel is maintained in engagement with the ledge through the provision of a leaf spring 14, which bears directly upon that portion of the tape passing across the ledge 13, and thus prevents the free end of the reel from assuming a relatively inaccessible position, as will. be clearly understood. In this instance the spring 14: is secured in its operative position by connecting the upper end of the same with a shelf 15, integrally formed upon the top of the body 1. The shelf is equipped with an elongated slot 16, in which is positioned the upper ofiset extremity of the spring 14, and it will be evident that the tension exerted by the spring upon the ledge 13 will be sufficient to maintain said spring in its operative position.
By pressing uponthe free extremity of the tape 5, it Will be obvious that it Will be prac tically impossible for such extremity to assume an inaccessible position to the rear of the roller 7. 7
After the tape has been moistened by the roller the same may be severed from the body of the tape carried by the drum 4,
through the provision of a shearing 'member 17, Which latter is rigidly mounted upon tape which may be conveniently grasped and isxof great aid in unwlndmg desired lengths of the tape from the reel fl, as will be =clearly understood.
From :theflforegoing it Will be apparent :that there is provided a device whereby the objects of the invention have been'achieved, andithat all of the advantageous features of construction above mentioned are, among others, present. In this form of'the invention the body 1 is provided with a rear Wall 18, Whioh'may beassociated With any suitable vertical support so that the apparatus will be maintained in its operative or supportedposition. Of course, it will be understood that the invention may be, supported in any other suitable manner from that described. It will be :noted thatthe fluid con- *tained Within the apparatus, for moistening the *roller 7, is inclosed by'thepeculiar construction of the apparatus, thus precluding the arising-ofobjectionable odors from such fluid. The device is of simple construction,
reliable inoperation, does not include delicate parts which may readily become out of order and can be economically manufactured.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A11 adhesive tape supporting device, consisting of a body portion formed to include bearings for the support of a tape tremityof said tape reel "in a position for cooperatlon W1th said roller, and a'shearing element carried by said member and spaced from :said -resilient means.
2. An adhesive tape supporting and disipensing device, consisting of 'a casting formed "to include means forsupportinga tape reel, a ledge formed upon saidcasting,
:r'esilientmeans tending to maintain 'the free extremity ot' said tape in engagement with said ledge, and moistening roller situatedto engage the adhesivesurfaceof said tape as the latter is unwound from said reel, and a shearing element entirely independent of said :resilient means carried by said casting and spaoed an appreciable distance from said roller.
3. An adhesive tape supporting device consisting of a body :formed off-spaced longitudlnally extending Water contalnlng com- :Partmen'ts "in communication with a forwardly located roller Well, a roller in said =wel1,-and means for supporting a rollof adhesive tape in .a space bet-ween said Water containing comp artments.
:In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
THOMAS T. MCGUIRE.
