' To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MERLE E. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kane, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to door securers and it has for its object to produce a simple and improved device of this class which may be easily applied to the casings of either right or left hand doorsfor the purpose of securing the door in locked condition.

A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and improved device of the character described which may be read ily carried about the person or in a traveling bag so as to be ready for use whenever required in hotels and other places where the ordinary lock is not deemed sufficiently secure.

With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved device in the act of being attached to a door casing.

Fig. 2 is a view in elevation showing the part of a door and casing to which the device has been applied.

Fig. 3 is a horizontal section with the device in plan.

Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4-4 in Fig. 2.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.

The body of the improved door securer is of angular form, the same being composed of a metallic plate casing having limbs 15, 16 disposed substantially at right angles to one another, the limb 15 being, however, formed with a recess or pocket 17 adjacent to the limb 16. The latter is provided at its free end with prongs or spurs 18 extending in the same direction with respect to the limb 16 as does the limb 15, said prongs being substantially at right angles to the limb 16 and therefore in approximately parallel relation to the limb 15. Pivotally connected with the limb 15 by means of a pivot member 19 is a latch bar 20 having a handle 21. The limb 16 is provided with notches or recesses 22 in the top and bottom edges there-- of, said notches being formed adjacent to the pocket 17 and with their outer walls in alinement with the inner face of the limb 15, as will be clearly seen in Fig. 3, said notches being adapted for cooperation with the latch bar which is pivotally mounted on the inner face of the limb 15. The limb 16 is provided with a countersunk opening 23 adapted to receive the head of a common wood screw 24; which may be utilized when desired in order to secure the device permanently in position on a door casing.

In operation the spurs 18 of the limb 16 are driven into the face of the door casing, the latch bar 20 and the limb 15 being disposed adjacent to the inner side of the door post. When the door is closed it will serve to retain the limb 16 securely in engagement with the casing after which, by swinging the latch bar in engagement with the uppermost notch 22, said latch bar will retain the door securely against an effort to open the same. It is obvious that the device may be used with equal facility in connection with right and left hand doors, the latch bar being mounted pivotally for engagement with whichever of the notches 22 that may happen to be uppermost. The device is adapted to be carried by travelers for temporary use to secure doors, the spurs 18 being suflicient to retain the device temporarily in position. If it shall be desired to apply the device with some degree of permanency this may be done by the use of an ordinary Wood screw, as seen at 24 in the drawings.

By reference to Fig. 3 it will be observed that in the closed position the latch bar 20 has two bearings against the body of the device; one of the said bearings being a long hearing at the inner side of the limb 15, and the other bearing being against the outer wall of the notch 22 in the limb 16. This is advantageous because in the event of an attempt being made to force the door open the latch bar 20 will bear practically throughout the length of the limb 15 against the body and in that Way prevent the limb 16 being rocked out of its position in engagement with the door frame.

It Will also be observed that by reason of the latch bar 20 being arranged at the inner side of the limb 15 of the body, the latch bar is reinforced by the said limb of the body and is held by the same against the face of the door post with the result that it is feasible to make the latch bar thin and light in Weight. The offset portion 17 of the limb 15 is advantageous because it enables the remainder of the limb to hold the latch bar against the face of the door post or frame and at the same time lends increased stiffness to the limb and affords a means whereby the body of the device may be readily grasped to facilitate the disengagement of the same from the door post or frame.

Having described the invention What I claim as new is:

A door securer comprising a body having limbs disposed at right angles to each other; one of said limbs being barbed and being provided With a notch, and the other limb being disposed for arrangement in parallel relation to a door frame and having an olfset portion adjacent to the apex of the angle, and a latch bar pivoted to the inner side of the last named limb of the body at a point remote from the first named limb and arranged at the inner side of the last named limb to rest between the same and a door frame and being adapted to seat in the notch of the first named limb and to extend beyond the said limb so as to rest against the side of a door.
