' ispeemcation of Letters Patent.. Patented Dec. 241,` 1918.
`imp iication inea may 1o, 1918. serial No. 233,799.-
State of` Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors and Blade-Holders; and I do hereby declare lthel followi'ng to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improve ments in safety` razors and blade holders, and has for an object to provide a combination device which is useful both as a razor for shaving purposes and in addition adapted to serve as a holder for blades during stropping operations.
In the accompanying drawings forming a partof this application, and in which similar reference symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several views: y

` Fig. 15 is a sectional view taken on the line 15-15 in Fig. 14.
Referring more particularly to the drawportion 3 alo'n ings, designates an elongated bar-provided.
with a central elongated slotA 2, acut-away portion 3 is made. 'l
A relatively short bar 5 is pivoted as indicated at 6 at one endof said elongated bar 1, and there' is preferably placed between the elongated 'bar and' said short bar 5 at the pivits loweredge and burs 4 Ipro]ec ting at right angles therefrom on the opposite side to that in which the cut-away otal point 6 a spacing washer17 which apy pears in Figs. 6 and 10. y'Ihev short bar 5 is formed with perforations 8 to receive the ends of the burs 4 and with a slot 9 opening through its free end, and which is formed by a relatively short upper prong lO'and an elongated prong 11 which projects 'a dis- At the opposite end of the elongated bar 1 is pivoted, as indicated at 12, a second relatively short bar 13 having a cut-away lower edge 14 of dimensions similar to the cutaway part 3 in the bar 1 and being further provided with a slot 14 at its free end formed by an upper elongated prong 15 and a lower relativelyshort prong 16.` The prongs on the free ends of the bars and 13 are arranged to interfit when the bars are swung down Ito the iower 'horizontal position against the elongated bar 1v in thevmanner ceived forms a lock which prevents the shortbar from swinging out of the horizontal position. I 'n Figs. 1, 2 and 3 this pin 17 is tance beyond the end of said upper prong 10.
shown engaged in the slot 9 holding the I short bar locked; while-in Fig. 10 thespin 17 is shown occupying the other slot 14 of the short bar 13 which is accordingly locked lin position.
A. U-shaped handle 18 is carried by and serves to shift the pin 17 in the slot 2; this v handle -18 being also useful to swing up in either direction aboutsaid pivot 17 in order tov tightly embrace the elongated bar 1 and either of the -bars 5 or 13, whereby topress these bars firmly against the razor blade which is; held therebetween.
All 0f the above parts are.4 preferably made of flexiblemetal which 'will afford aj tight gripping action. y In Fig. 12 I show an improved razor blade 19 having the spaced perforations 20 adapt- 55 "moved into the slot 14 and forms a lock for said short bar 13, as indicated in Fig. 10.,
ed to fit over the "burs 4, and also formed edges and coperates with the double guard e 22 shown morev particularly and 15.`
4, and a slot 24 in the end thereof is arranged to be occupied by the vspacing washer An elongated groove 25 is made in one i face of the guard: 22, and'is of'such dimeny sions as to receive the short bar 5 in the manner shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
The operation of the invention may be brieiy described as follows:
Assuming the parts to be shown as in Fig. 7, the device may be used as a safety razor by first swinging' the short bar 5 to the right so as' to enable the blade 19 to be placed against the elongated bar 4, `which is done by engaging the perforations 20 with the burs 4, After the blade 19 has been put in place, the guard 22 is thereafter in a similar way'fitted over the burs 4, and the short bar 5 may be then swung back to the left and brought down opposite the 30 f elongated bar 1, lwhere it will snap into the groove 25 of the guard.. The pin 17 and handle 18 will, of course, be removed to the left in slot 2 to permit the short bar 5 to descend to the full horizontal position, after vwhich the pin" 17 is again moved to the extreme right, as shown in Fig. 1, where it will form a lock toprevent the further swinging-in either direction of said short bar 5. The handle 18 itself is now swung upwardly from the position shown in Fig.
7 to that shown in Fig. 1, and it will tightly .embrace the bars 1. and 5 and cause a clamping action to be exerted on the guard and blade. The device is now in readiness for shaving, and after the operation the blade and guard may be removed by reversing the operations just described.
The device is also useful for sharpening Vblades and is constructed to form a blade holder for receiving such blades as the Gillette, Durham DupleX, 'Ever Ready and other razor blades.
For stropping, -the opposite short bar 13 is employed to clamp the blade between same and the elongated bar 1. The pin 17 is The 1 handle 18 is likewisev swung up to the left to em'brace the bars 1 and y13, whereby the blade will be tightly clamped in place. The cut-away parts 3 and 14 in the bars 41 and 13, respectively, are provided to receive the backings 26 which are found on such razor blades as the Ever Readyl blade shown at 27 in Figs. 10 and v11. The co- 'clamped tightly against means provided at the free ends .short bars whereby4 to hold same meseta operation 0f the cut-away parts with such backing 26 also serves to hold the blade againstA displacement whi e stropping.
From the foregoing it will be appreciated that I have provided an exceedingly simple implement adapted to serve both as a safety razor for shaving and a blade holder for sharpening, and which may be manufactured Vat small cost. y.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore l do not wish to be limited to suchA vfeatures except as may be required Yby the claims.
