Be it known that I, CHARLIE L. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winston-Salem, in the county of Forsyth and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Heaters, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had to, the accompanying drawings- I This invention relates to certain improvements in water heaters and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character of a kettle-furnace type; and it is an object of the invention to provide a device ofthis general character having novel and im roved means whereby liquid deposited wit iin a receptacle or pot forming part of the heater is subjected to the generated heat in a manner to obtain a maximum of efficiency.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character adapted for heating; and boiling water for washing purposes and wherein means is included for supporting a tub or the like.

Furthermore it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which includes a receptacle or pot to contain the water to be heated and wherein a source of heat substantially entirely surrounds the lower portion of said pot or receptacle.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved water heater whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use. all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 i a vertical, sectional view taken through a water heater constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and

ings, B denotes the body of my improved heater which is preferably substantially cylindrical in form and having its top and bottom closed. Supported by the top 1 of the body B at substantially its axialcenter is a pot or receptacle 2 depending within the body Ba predetermined distance. pot 2 is adapted to contain water or other liquid to be heated.

' Surrounding thepot or receptacle 2 jacent to but above the lower end thereof are the grates 3 to support a fire bed which may bepformed of any suitable fuel- The body B is provided with suitable doors 4 positioned above the grates 3 so thatfuel may be readily applied within the body as required. Also in communication with the illterior of the body B but adjacent the top thereof is a fiue or pipe 5 and with which coacts a damper 6. The purpose of the line or pipe 5 and the damper 6 is believed to be self-evident.

In communication with the receptacle or pot 2 at the lower end thereof is the pipe 7 which extends downwardly a predetermined distance and is then extended laterally through a side wall of the body B. Interposed in said pipe 7 is the controlling valve 8. A side wall of the body B is also provided with a door 9 to afford communication within the receptacle or pot 2 so that the liquid therein may be removed therefrom through the door if desired. The body B below the grates 3 is intersected by the substantially horizontally disposed ash chute 10. The chute 10 is provided with spaced parallel elongated openings or slots 12 through which ashes or the like may drop. The ashes falling through the openings or slots 12 are received within the pans 14 insertible within the body B through a suitable opening 15 produced in a wall thereof. The forward ends of the pans 14 are connected by the plate 16 which serves to close the opening 15 when the pans 14 are positioned within the body B. The chute 10 is provided with a suitable opening 17 through which the pipe 7 hereinbefore referred to is directed. A marginal portion of the chute 10 is extended exteriorly of the body B to afford a shelf 11 upon which articles may rest as the occasions of practice may require.

From the foregoing description, I it is thought to be obvious that a water heater constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may beassembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this; reason I do not'wish to be understood as limiting. myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention' in praotice,- except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim:

1. A waterheater comprising a tubular body having a top, a pot supported by the top of the body and extending therein,

" grates positioned'within the body and surrounding the lower portion of the pot, an

ash chute intersecting the body below the pot and grates, said chute'being provided with aslotfand a pan insertible within the bodyand adapted to underlie the slot.
