NON-FREEZING TOILET. APPLICATION FILED APRA, I918.

@FFIQE THEODORE SCHAFER, OF OLNEY, ILLINOIS.
NON-FREEZING- TOILET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1918.
Application filed April 4, 1918. Serial No. 226,662.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE SGHAFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olney, in the county of Richland and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Freezing Toilets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide simple means for preventing toilets and their water supply pipes from freezing, by limiting the closing of the flush tank filling valve to cause a steady, though small, flow of water into the tank, through the overflow pipe, the closet bowl and waste pipe; and with this object in view the invention resides in the novel features of construction, and unique arrangement of parts herein described and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a flush tank en'ibodying my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the stop emlployed to limit the closing of the filling va ve.
In the drawing above briefly described,
the numeral 1 designates a flush tank, 2 the filling valve, and 3 the arm having a float 4 for closing the valve 2. 5 refers to the overflow pipe and 6 to the flush valve having the usual operating means. Attached to the pipe 5 by a spring clip is a stop arm 7 located in the upward path of float 4 to limit its movement and thus prevent entire closing of the valve, thus insuring the continuous flow of water above referred to, to prevent freezing.
The arm 7 is formed of a strip of metal hav ng one end bent upwardly to form a vertical arm 8 which at 9 is folded downwardly upon itself to provide a clamping plate 10 preferably extending below the arm 7 and adapted to contact with the outer side of the overflow pipe 5. The plate 10 is formed with a U-shaped slit 11 and the metal within the U is bent outwardly to provide a clamping finger 12 for reception in the pipe 5, said plate 10 and finger 12 coactmg in forming a spring clip to insure easy attachment of the device and easy vertical adjustment according to the flow of water desired. The vertical arm 8 is provided for the purpose of spacing the stop arm 7 sufliciently below the water level to insure insufiicient raising of the arm 3 to close valve 2. v
The attachment is simple, inexpensive and easy to apply, yet is highly efficient. Since probably the best results are obtained from the construction shown, this construction is preferable, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may well be made.
I claim:
1. The combination with a flush tank, its filling valve, the fioat-raised arm for closing said valve, and water outlet means, of a stop arm in the upward path of said float-raised arm to limit the closing of the valve and thus insure a continuous discharge of water through said outlet means.
2. A stop to limit the closing of flush tank filling valves comprising a stop arm to limit the raising of the filling valve closing arm, and a spring clip on one end of said arm for attaching it to the overflow pipe.
3. A stop to limit the closing of flush tank filling valves comprising a stop arm to limit the raising of the filling valve closing arm, one end of said arm being bent into a vertical position, said vertical portion being provided with a U-shaped slit and the metal within the U being bent outwardly to form with said vertical portion a spring clip for attaching the arm to the overflow pipe.
4. A stop to limit the closing of flush tank filling valves comprising a stop arm to limit the raising of the filling valve closing arm, one end of said arm being bent upwardly to form a vertical arm, said vertical arm being folded downwardly upon itself and having in its downwardly extending portion a U-shaped slit, the metal with the U being bent outwardly to form a spring linger coacting with said downwardly extending portion in forming a spring clip for attaching the device to the overflow pipe.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
THEODORE SCI-IAFER.
