COMBINED HEAVY-OIL CONTAINER AND PUMP.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELBERT R. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Heavy-Oil Containers and Pumps, of which the fOllOWlllg is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of devices used in garages for supplying heavy oil to the transmission, rear axle, or any gear case of automobiles and tractors, which lubricate with such oil, said devices being generally known as 600 V. pumps, the term having reference to the trade name of a well known heavy lubricating oil.
These pumps comprise essentially a port able container with an outlet for a cable hose connection, and a pumping mechanism more or less intimately associated with the container for forcing the heavy oil through the outlet connection, the pump being necessary for the reason that the consistency of the oil is such that it will not readily pour through a funnel, and the location of the inlet to the lubricating chambers being generally too inconvenient for any ordinary pouring connection.
In the usual types of these heavy oil pumps, the pumping device is sometimes connected to the container exteriorly and sometimes on the interior thereof, but in any case, on account of the thick consistency of the oil, they are difficult to work and somewhat ineffective in delivery.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved device for the purpose, in which the character and location of the pump driving connections are such as to render the operation easier and more effective and give perfect lubrication to all parts; and to this end my invention consists in the novel combined heavy-oil container and pump which I shall now fully describe by reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a partial or partly broken vertical section of the device on the line 11 of Fig. 2.

1 is a container of any suitable shape in cross-section having preferably, though not essentially, one flat side as shown by Fig. 3, to enable the free and close application of the power crank as will presently appear.
The container has a cover 2, a carrying bail 3, and a bottom l, the latter being of relatively heavy character such as a casting would afford, said bottom being peripherally flanged and riveted to the body of the container.
The bottom 4 is best formed with lug feet "5, one of which has a projection 6 which provides for the imposition of the foot of the operator to hold the device steady, when the pump is being operated.
7 is the outlet pipe from the container to which the usual delivery connection is to be applied.
8 is a pump which in the best form is of a rotary type, as for example, one comprising a pair of intermeshing rotors 9. The pump is located within the container and its casing is formed with cars 10 through which it is secured to the bottom 1 by the bolts, 11. The pump lies near the flat side of the container, and the short shaft 12 of one of its rotors finds firm bearing in an uprising lug 13 of the pump casing.
The intake 14 of the pump is directed laterally toward the flat side of the container and its discharge 15 is connected with the outlet pipe 7 of the container.
Upon the rotor shaft 12 is carried a small sprocket 16, from which a chain 17 passes upwardly in the container, to a large sprocket 18, within the container carried on a shaft 19 mounted in the container walls in suitable bearings. One end of the shaft 19, projects exteriorly through the flat side of the container and carries a crank 20 provided with a handle 21. By the operation of the crank, which, on account of the fiat side of the container, is quite closely placed, and free in its movement, power is transmitted to operate the pump, to effect the discharge of the oil. The leverage, due to the character of the connections and the relative diameters of the sprockets, renders the operation easy, and the discharge effective and continuous while all the connections are well lubricated. These connections exposed and moving within the body of oil not only provide for perfect lubrication, but also the important function of stirring the oil, and this is especially efiective in the vicinity of the intake of the pump, which is the object of grouping the intake and the lower sprocket close together, so that the rotating sprocket and the chain passing about it have a tendency of directing the oil to the intake.
The whole device is compact, attractive in appearance and effective in operation.
I claim 1. A device for the described purpose, comprising a container having an outlet; a pump-member Within the container having an intake exposed to the container contents, and a discharge fitted to the container outlet; a chain-drive disposed within the container and exposed to its contents for operating the pump member; and means exterior to the container for operating the chain-drive.
2. A device for the described purpose, comprising a container having an outlet; a pump-member disposed within the lower portion of the container, having an intake exposed to the container contents and a discharge fitted to the container outlet, driving connections for the pump consisting of a shaft within the container to drive said pump member; a sprocket carried by said shaft; a shaft mounted within the upper portion of the container; a sprocket Within the container carried by said shaft; and a chain passing over said sprockets, all of said driving connections being exposed to the container contents; and means exterior to the container for rotating the upper shaft.
3. A device for the described purpose, comprising a container having an outlet; a pump member disposed within the lower portion of the container, having a laterally directed intake exposed to the container contents, and a discharge fitted to the container outlet; driving connections for the pump consisting of a shaft Within the container, to drive said pump member; a sprocket carried by said shaft and located in proximity to the intake of the pump member, to direct the fluid contents of the container thereto; a shaft mounted within the upper portion of the container; a sprocket within the container carried by said shaft; and a chain passing over said sprockets, all of said drivshaft; a shaft mounted Within the upper portion of the container; a sprocket within the container carried by said shaft; and a chain passing over said sprockets, all of said driving connections being exposed to the container contents and means exterior to the container for rotating the upper shaft consisting of a crank mounted on said shaft and operating beside the fiat side of the container.
5. A device for the described purpose, comprising a container having a relatively heavy bottom member and an outlet through its side wall; a pump-member carried Within the container, secured to the bottom member thereof, said pump member having an intake exposed to the container contents, and a discharge fitted to the container outlet; driving connections for the pump consisting of a shaft Within the container to drive the pump member, said shaft having an outer bearing in a lug independent of the side Wall of the container; a sprocket carried by said shaft;
a shaft mounted Within the upper portion of the container; a sprocket'within the container carried by said shaft; and a chain passing over said sprockets, all of said driving connections being exposed to the container contents; and means exterior to the container for rotating the upper shaft.
