To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. DEWEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heaters, of which the following is a full and exact specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in heaters, and more particularly to heaters of the gas type, the principal object of the invention being to devise an improved construction of heater for efficient generation of heat as well as roviding for proper radiation thereof in the most effective manner. The invention also aims to increase the safety and the convenience of such heaters and to improve their construction generally.
To this end the invention includes, among other improvements a heater con struction comprising a heating drum provided with a separable burner stand having a grating removably mounted thereon; the legs of the burner stand carry a removable heat deflector a suitable distance below the drum, and the air mixing openings of the burner are located above this deflector and at a safe distance from the hose connecting point outside the burner stand. The other features of improvement and advantage will appear in the course of the description.
With the above general object in view, the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating one form of embodiment thereof, after which those features of improvement deemed to be novel will be severally set forth and defined in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a central vertical section through a heater embodying the present improvements, said section being along the line II of Fig. 3;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the drum and burner stand in separated relation and the cap member inverted; and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line IIIIII of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, a burner 2 is carried by a burner stand comprising a ring top portion 4 supported by three legs 6, secured to said ring by means Specification of Letters Patent.

One of said legs 6 is formed with an intermediate thickened portion 10 suitably bored for receiving a valve casing 12, to which is joined a hose connection 1% and the pipe connection 16 into which is detachably fitted the lower end of the burner pipe 18 having the air mixing openings 20 adjacent its lower end. The valve casing 12 is provided with the exterior valve 22 and pilot lighter 24C swivelly mounted and adapted to throw a jet flame across the space between it and the burner 2 and below the ring 4. A downward radiation deflector plate 26 is removably mounted upon lugs 28 formed upon the several legs 6 at some distance below the ring member 4, said plate 26 being formed with a central opening 30 for accommodatingthe burner pipe 18.
A grating 32, forming a hot plate, is removably mounted on the top of the burner stand as thus constructed, said grating being formed with a bottom annular rib 33 adapted to fit snugly within the top margin of said ring member A.
A heater drum 3%, provided with the top covering 36 but having no bottom, is arranged for removable mounting of the same upon the above described burner stand, said drum being of a diameter adapting it to fit snugly over the top portion of said stand and be supported upon the shoulders 38 formed on the outer faces of the legs 6. Suitable windows to, of mica or the like, are provided in the sides of the drum at the points illustrated, and inside the drum adjacent its upper end is securedby means of bracket pieces t2a second deflector member of inverted cone shape for laterally diverting the upward radiation of heat. A vent outlet is provided through a top vent member 4:6 mounted in an opening formed centrally in said top covering 36. Associated with this vent member so is a. skeleton cap piece 48 of basket shape having the internal annular shoulder 50 and the annular series of exterior shoulders 52. This cap piece is thus adapted to be mounted normally in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 with its outer margin inclosing the top edge of the vent member 46 and the latter engaging the shoulder 50; or, in inverted position as illustrated in Fig. 2, with the top edge of the vent member 46 engaging the shoulders 52 and the cap piece forming a receptacle for receiving a cup or other object to be heated therein.
The above described arrangement aflords a simple and effective construction for carrying out the desired objects of the improvements. With the drum mounted removably on the burner stand, the parts may be assembled as in Fig. 1, simply for heating purposes, or the drum may be removed as shown in Fig. 2, and the remaining parts be used as a hot plate for cooking or the like. Or, the drum may be left in place and the cap piece 48 inverted for supporting a vessel or for receiving a cup or other object to be heated, where the heat thus afforded would be sufficient. When used as a heater in the form illustrated in Fig. 1, the open space at the base of the drum between it and the deflector plate 26 provides for the necessary freedom of air currents so essential to proper burner action, while the deflector plate 26 intercepts the downward radiation of heat from the burner and diverts to the surrounding air that percentage of such radiation which would otherwise be absorbed by the floor or other support of the stand. When desired, as for storing, cleaning or other purpose, the deflector plate may be removed by simply detaching the pipe 18 and lifting out the plate 26, tilting it slightly in lifting it off the lugs 2-8. The burner is lighted by means of a jet of flame from the pilot lighter 2a. The pilot lighter 24 being swivelly mounted, as hereinbefore set forth, when it is desired to light the burner the pilot lighter is turned upwardly and as the gas flowing therethrough is ignited the flame is shot through the space between the bottom of the drum and the deflector plate 26 in the direction of the burner. As a factor of safety, it will be noted that the hose connection 14 is located outside the burner stand and below the plane of the deflector plate 26, while the air mixing openings 20 are located at the base of the burner pipe 18 within the stand and at the center thereof and above the plane of the deflector plate 26, thus guarding as much as possible against the shooting back of the flame from the burner to the hose connection, a danger so common with burners of the gas type and often resulting in serious trouble and damage, caused by burning away the end of the hose or so burning it as to render the joint defective. The grating 32 is readily replaceable in case it requires renewal, and it may or may not be used when the drum 3% is in place, but the proportion of the parts is such that it is convenient to leave the grating assembled in the position illustrated so that it is ready for use on simply removing the drum from the stand.
While the foregoing represents what is now deemed to constitute the preferred form of embodiment of the invention, the right is reserved to such formal changes or modiflcations as may fairlv fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claimis:
l. A heater comprising a tripod burner stand, a downward radiation deflector removablv supported upon the legs of said stand and provided with a centralopening, a pipe connection carried by one of the legs of said stand and extending wholly beneath said deflector, and a burner located within said stand and provided witha burner pipe extending through said opening and fitting removably in said pipe connection, said burner pipe having air-mixing openings" located above said deflector.
2. A heater comprising a bottomless drum having a top vent opening, a'burner' stand of skeleton form for permitting free upward passage of air through the entire bottom opening of the drum, adow'nward radiation deflector plate carried by said stand at some distance below the lower end of the drum, a burner located within the lower portion'of said drum and provided with air-mixing openings above the plane of said deflector plate, and supply-pipe members leading from said burner to the exterior'of said stand and provided with a hose connection positioned outside said stand and below the plane of said deflector plate.
3. A heater comprising a bottomless drum having a top vent opening, a burner stand of skeleton form for permitting'free upward Y low the lower end of the drum, a burner located within the lower portion of said drum, supply-pipe members leading from said burner to the exterior of said stand and provided with a hose connection'p'ositionedoutside the stand and'below the plane of said deflector plate, and a pilotgas burner swivelly mounted adjacent said hose connection and adapted to be turned upward and project a lighting flame through the space between said plate and the lower end of said drum;

A. heater comprising abottomless drum provided with a top vent opening, a removable stand having its upper portion shaped to telescope snugly within the lower end of the drum and provided with a burner projecting within said lower end of the drum, and grating removably mounted upon said upper portion of said'stand and flttingwithin the lower end of saiddrum.
5. A heater comprising aburner stand and drum supported thereby, said drum having a top vent member and a skeleton basket-shaped cap member reversibly mounted upon said vent member for either inclosing the latter or depending therein in receptacle form for supporting an object to be heated.
6. A heater comprising a bottomless drum having a top vent opening, a removable stand having its upper portion shaped to telescope snugly within the lower end of the drum and provided with exterior shoulders for engagement with the lower margin of said drum and removably supporting the 10 inclosed by the lower end portion of said 15 drum.
