UNITED sTArEs PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE P. WIG G-INTON, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN. ASSIGNOR TO KALAMAZOO LOOSE LEAF BINDER 00., OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
LOOSE-SHEET DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented D 17 1918 Application f led November 17, 1917. Serial No. 202,485.
To all when! it may concern:
Be it known that I. (hconon I. VIGGIN- 'rox. a citizen of the Inited States. residing at the city and county of Kahunazoo, State, of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Loosebheet Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improven'ients in loose sheet devices.
My improvements are especially designed to facilitate the handling of loose sheets, by which term include cards and the like, in accounting or record systems.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved loose sheet device which facilitates the handling or ma nipulation of loose record sheets.
devices.
Second, to, provide an improved loose sheet device which facilitates the use of loose sheets in record and accounting systems and at the same time provides effective holders or files therefor.
Third, to provide an improved loose sheet device including a tile or holder which is of large capacity.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details. will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by thedevices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming, a part of this specificatitm, in which:
Figure I is a perspective view of a cabinet containing a plurality of the holders employed by me in my improved loose sheet Fig. II is a perspective view of one of the holders removed from the cabinet.
.Fig. III is a'perspective view of one of my improved loose sheet; devices opened, the removable sheet support being also shown.
Fig. IV. is a vertical longitudinal section on a line corresponding toline H of Fig.
V with a. part of the sheets disposed in each holder member, the sheet support l'ieing disposed in one member.
. a part of the sheets arranged in an offset relation.
Fig. \'.l is a. detail section on a line corresponding to line (3( of Fig. V with the binder members in position.
Fig. VII is a transverse section on a line corresponding to line T-7 of Fig. II.
Fig. VIII is a perspective view of the binder member provided with posts.
Fig. IX is an enlarged detail side eleva tion showing details of the connections for the holder members.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar. parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of. the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the-sheets 1,-
illustrated. are provided with spaced notches 2 and holes 3, the sheets being such as are shown .in my Patent #1,174,458, March 7, 1916. My present improvements are well adapted for use in connection with sheets employed in accounting systems employing the sheets of that patent. :The details of the-sheets may, however. be very greatly' varied as my present improvements are adapted for use with a great variety of sheets and in a variety of relations. H
In the structure illustrated I provident holder comprising a pair. of holder members designated generally by the numerals 4 and 5. each of these holder members comprising a bottom wall 6 and rear wall '7 disposed at right angles. "Ijhe side walls 8 are tapered forwardly from the rear walls so that they are complementary when the members are superimposed or disposed in a reversed facmg relation, as shown in Fig. II.- When thus disposed they provide a rectangular handled as a file box and placed in a cabinet,
as 3,see Fig. I. p
o'facilitate the fingering of the sheets I provide. the tapered support 14 which may be placed in one of the holder members at the rear of the sheets, as shown in Fig. IV,
' supporting the sheets at an acute angle to the-rear wall of the holder and thereby supporting their upper edges in a stepped rela- These holder members, when .seperaied, cousin-nine means for supporting the sheets so hint they may be conveniently transferred from one to the other, which is a matter of rest convenience in the manipnlation of 't-he sneeis in accounting systems. A convenient means 'ior aoconigiilishing this is a support comprising sidemembers 16 connected by cross pieces 17 and l8 the upper edges of ihe'side me ubers having l-sl'ieped recesses 'lherein co; .4 ilznting rests for the holder membo so that they may be arranged therein wii'hlheir rear walls adjacent, as shown in the accompanying drawing.
Titllill the holder inenrbers thussupported the sheets may be conveniently manipulated or irai-is' errerl from one '0 the other;
To facilitate alining the sheets the rear wnlls are provided with guide members 19 with which the notches in the sheets may be engaged, as shown in Fig, V.
The holder members are preferably of such width as to permit selected sheets being arranged in an offset; relation to indinle a se ecl'cdgroup or classification.
To facilitate we lizimllingof the sheets as a unit and to better-keep them in position whenndjirsted for storage or transporration l provide binding means comprising the binding member 2-0 having posts 21 thereon adapted to be inserted through.
slined holes The binder member 23 is provided with inn; clutches 2-l adapted to engage the posts. To facilitate the releasing" of the slieeis the bottom of the holder in en'iberi has an opening 25 therein through which the binder incniber 20 and the posts may be removed,
To i'ncililalie the engaging oi the posts the bottom of the holder member 5 has holes 26 therein positioned so "that the posts may pass l'hrongh the-hole as shown in l VI.
The bii'ider member .20 has n notch 27.011 each side adapted to coach with the 'gi'iides if facilitating the insefiion of the posts and also allowing; the edges of rho sheets to abut the rear wall. The binder 'neinber has :i nolob 23 therein also adnplged to engage the guides By thus nrranging the parts 1 provide a sirm'ture which greatly facilitates the innnipnlal-ion of lhe sheets. is oi? large onpaoily and well ada naxl es :1 file or cabinet-unit.
l hare illustrated and described my impro'reinents in one form in which I have emlnidieiil rhe same prrurtice l have not atempted lo illnsirale or describe certain modifioehons or adaptations which I oontemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired. or as the part-low lar use may render most adaptable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
