Be it known that we CHRISTOPHER W. MGLEAN, of `thevcity of ew Berne and State of North Carolina, and WILLIAM M. ELroN, of the city of Brooklyn and Stateof 'New York,
' have made jointly a newand useful Improvement in RailwayDumping-Cars ;V and we do hereby declare 'the following to be a true and correct description 'of theV construction and opt eration of the same, reference being had to the the drawing hereunto attached making part and parcel of'this our specification.
V'.Lhe nature and object of this'invention is so to construct a dumping-car, arranged and applied to 'a platform-car, as that the coal, ore,
grain, or Vother material can be-dnmped, dis- Achai-ged, or deposited on either side ofthe 'railway-track, as may. be desired, by means'of certainwheels and ratchets attached tothe samedumping-car, and to retain such car,
' whiledischarging' its load, upon the platforml car by means of certain guides and grooves;
also, in the arrangement and construction of' theV miustablesidesof such dumping-car, sothat they can be released and fastened with 4ease and great certainty. v
v In the drawing, Figure 1 represents an end.
i view of my invention; Fig. 2,11. cross-section v of seme taken in line a;.w,iFig. 1. Fig. 3 shows ,'threlation of the end board 'of the dumping-y ear and the means of operating thesame.
.l D represents the platform of a car; upon which-'the dumping apparatus is placed. E E. are head-blocks orsupports vfor the axle of latter' engages with .the ratchet .or' gear A upon the ends of the dumping-canas seen in Fig.. 2. The ratchet orgeer A may be made in one or more pieces, as desired. -The dumpthe placing and adjustment thereuponof the 'iction-wheels G These friction-wheels are so constructed as torun in,and are guided by, the metallic grooves G C, which are iirmly secured to the head-blocks E E. rlhese grooves at either end contain the recesses c c v 'r and the hooked flanges c c'.
The material or load containedlin the car..
can be dumped on either side of the track by operating the hand-wheels H, and when the central wheels of the dumping-car reach the' position shown in Fig. 2, one of the wheels is forccdf/svithin the hooked. flange c', while the other wheel is raised within the recess c,as
seen in same ignre. By this varrangement thedumping-car .is securely held upon'the v platform, while sucient inclination is given it to discharge its load.
vto'the under side of the bottom of the dumping-car, and projecting beyond the samea suf.
iicient distance to receive in a'slot formed upon it the rod or bar i. That firmly locks the end board; the locking and unlocking of the same being controlled by the backward or forward movement of the lever g.
What we claim as 'our invention, and desire to secure by LettersPatentJsv I vJ.. The construction and arrangement and combination of, the gear-wheels B B, ratchet bars'A A with the grooved plates 0 C, in the manner and for the purpose herein described. 2. The combination -of the groove'd plates 0 C vwith' the upright'supports UE 'Ey in the .manner and for the purpose herein set fort'ln 3. The within-described construction and arrangement of the grooved plates CUC, having grooves c c, so as to admit of thee nd of the dumpingcar beingraised within-the same and retainedY therein by means of the hooked flanges c c', in the manner and for the purpose herein described. v
4; The looseand detachable hin ges a a, con bined with the end pieces F F oi' a dumpingear, and secured or locked by means of the letrolled as herein described, with the platform verig g, rods i i, and stops h h, in the manner of a railway-car, for the purposes herein set i, and for the purpose herein set forth. forth.
5. The combination and arrangement of the CHRISTOPHER W. MCLEAN. wheels b b, supprtedby their axles, when the WM. M. ELTON.
latter isprolonged upon the outer side, to odmit the placing thereupon the friction-Wheels G G, -when the same is combined with the Witnesses to signature of MCLEAN: B. LEWIS BLAGKFORD,
grooves C C and the rails d d, in the'mztnner. B' F JAMES' `sind. for the purpose herein described. Witnesses to signature of ELTON v 6. The construction and 4arrangement of a. ISAAC WYMAN,
dumpingear, operated, discharged, and con J OHN E. BENDIX.
