AIR-CIRCULATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1918.
Application filed November 29, 1916. Serial No. 134,038.
7 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD M. Mc- EWEN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Circulating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved form of air circulating device of the same general character as that shown and described in my prior Patent No. 1,214,198 granted January 30, 1917 to provide improved means for supporting the fan member; and to provide improved means for effecting the united tilting movement of the fan member.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation partly in section of the improved form of air circulating device.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a top plan of the same with the fan blades omitted.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail, partly sectional, of the crank member and its reduction gearing, the section being viewed from the plane of the line AA of Fig. 5.
Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of the same.
In the construction shown in the drawings, a base or support 1 is provided at its upper end with an arcuate arm 2 integral thereon and having its upper end 3 disposed directly above the upper end of the base 1. A ring 4 is journaled on a vertical axis within said arm by means of trunnions 5 and 6, which respectively engage the end 3 of the arm 2 and the upper end of the base 1 whereby it is adapted to rotate about a vertical axis.
The blower or fan mechanism 7, which may be of any of the usual constructions, is tiltably mounted within the ring 4 on trunnions 8 and 9, so that the mechanism may be tilted in a vertical plane transverse to the axis of the trunnions.
The means for tilting the blower mechanism in the vertical plane is in the nature of a crank member comprising a ball 10 carried on an arm or shank 11 mounted oif center on an annular disk member 12. The disk 12. is adapted to be rotated by the motor shaft 14 of the blower mechanism, suitable reduction gearing 13 being interposed so as to reduce the speed. In order that the crank member will effect a straight up and down movement of the blower mechanism, the ball 10 is arranged so as to travel in a horizontally disposed guideway 15 formed in an arcuate member 16 which is integrally secured to the ring 4 and surrounds the rear part of the blower mechanism 7.
Electric current may be supplied to the motor of the blower mechanism 7 in any suitable manner. A diagrammatic arrangement is herein illustrated embodying brushes 17 and 18 carried on a plate 19 secured to the ring 4, which contact with slip-ring segments mounted on the top of base 1. The slip-ring segments are suitably connected to binding posts 20 from which conductors (not shown) lead to a source of electricity. The operation of the device herein shown is substantially the same as that explained in my said prior patent. The blower mechanism is tilted up and down in a vertical plane through the action of the crank member. As a result of this tilting the normally inactive gyratory forces inherent in the rotating fan blades become active and cause the blower mechanism, and annular ring 4 which supports the same, to oscillate in a horizontal plane. The direction of oscillation is reversed with each upward or downward tilting of the blower mechanism.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous detailsof the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. An air circulating device, comprising motor driven blower mechanism, a member partially embracing said blower mechanism which is pivotally mounted thereon so as to tilt in a plane transverse to the axis of said pivotal connection, a support whereon said member is journaled on an axis substantially perpendicular to the axis of said pivotal connection, and a crank member connected to the motor shaft of said blower mechanism and engaging said member so as to tilt said blower mechanism whereby gyratory forces react to cause said blower mechanism to be oscillated in a plane transverse to that in which it is tilted.
2. An air circulating device, comprising a support, a ring trunnioned on said support,
motor driven blower mechanism trunnioned on said ring on an axis transverse of the axis of said ring trunnions, a transversely disposed arcuate member mounted on said ring and extending partially around said blower mechanism, and a crank member connected to the motor shaft of said blower mechanism and engaging said arcuate member so as to coact therewith for tilting said blower mechanism whereby gyratory forces react to cause said blower mechanism to be oscillated in-a plane transverse to that in which it is tilted.
3. An air circulating device, comprising a support, a ring trunnioned on said support,
motor driven blower mechanism trunnioned on said ring on an axis transverse of the axis of said ring trunnions, a transversely disposed arcuate member mounted on said ring and extending partiallyaround said blower mechanism, said arcuate member having a longitudinally disposed guideway formed therein, and a crank member connected to the motor shaft of said blower mechanism and coacting with said guideway for tilting said blower mechanism whereby gyratory forces react to cause said blower mechanism to be oscillated in a plane transverse to that in which it is tilted.
4. An air circulating device, comprising 4 a support, an arcuate arm vertically disposed on said support, a ring trunnioned on a vertical axis between the ends of said arm, motor driven .iblower mechanism tiltably mounted on a horizontal axis within said ringso as to tilt in a vertical plane, an arcuate member on said ring extending around one end of said blower mechanism and having a horizontally disposed guideway therein, a disk j ournaled on said blower mechanism and connected by speed reducing means to the motor shaft of said blower mechanism, and an arm on said disk adapted to travel in said guideway all arranged so that said blower mechanism is tilted in a vertical plane whereby gyratory forces react to cause said blower mechanism to oscillate in a horizontal plane.
Signed at Chicago this 27th day of N ovember, 1916.
