OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
BRUSH-HOLDING BOTTLE-GAP.
Specification of Letters Ifatent.
' Patented Dec. 3, 1918.
Application filed August 30, 1918. Serial No. 252,044.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST N. Rrrz, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brush- Holding Bottle-Caps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in bottle caps of that general type adapted to carry a brush which has its shank slidablypassed through the central portion of the cap and frictionally held by a body of rubber or similar resilient material which affords at the same time a seal for the opening of the cap through which the brush shank is passed, such, caps being intended for use in connection with bottles adapted to contain mucilage, stamp pad ink or other liquids which it is desired to seal from the atmosphere when not in use, and to prevent contact of the liquid with the hand of the operator incidental to the various manipulations .of the cap and brush in the use of liquid from the bottle.
It is the object of my invention to provide a brush carrying cap of this nature which is of maximum simplicity without detracting in any manner fron the brush holding or sealing efliciency of the cap, and it is more particularly my object to provide an improved brush holding resilient member for the cap.
With these and other obiects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds. my invention resides in the novel features of construction. combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and defined by the appended claim.
The drawing shows-a vertical sectional view through my improved brush holding can applied to a bottle.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing. there is shown a conventional bottle 5 having its neck formed with coarse threads 6 to engage in the correspondingly threaded cylindrical wall of my improved cap 7. the end of the cap being flat and adapted to seat against the outer end of the bottle neck. 7
The end of the cap 7 is provided centrally with a preferably cylindrical opening of considerably greater diameter than the diameter of the shank of the conventional distributing brush 8 which I employ in connection with my improved cap. For frictionally holding the brush shank in the cap, and at the same time affording a sealing closure for the space between the brush shank and the edge of the opening, a rubber annulus 9 is provided, Whose inner periphery is of such diameter as ,to snugly and frictionally receive the brush shank 8, and whose outer periphery is of greater diameter than the diameter of the opening of the cap end, and is provided with an annular groove 10 adapted to receive the edge portion of the cap end surrounding the opening, thus efliciently securing the rubber annulus in the cap end, and at the same time affording a seal between the annulus and the cap end, which together with the seal efi'ected by the frictional engagement of the brush shank with the inner periphery of the annulus, prevents any ingress of air to the bottle when the cap is applied thereto.
In assembling the annulus and cap, the annulus is either molded on the cap, or being of fairly soft rubber, is compressed to permit its insertion in the opening of the cap end, the natural expansion of the annulus when relieved of this assembling compression, serving to seat the bounding edge portion of the cap end in the groove 10.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a cap for mucilage bottles and the like, said cap having an opening in its end, of a resilient annulus having a groove in its outer periphery receiving the edge portion of the cap about the opening. anda brush having its shank passed through and gri pinglv engaged by the inner peripherv of the annulus.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set mv hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
