This invention relates to a Wrench that is capable of being used in many-situations and at various angles, the invention having reference more particularly to a wrench that is adjustable to different sizes of nuts and also adjustable angularly, or so that the handle or arm portion of the wrench may be changed to different angles with respect to the jaws of the wrench.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple and compact adjustable angle wrench which shall be so constructed as to permit quick adjustment of angularity and be Another object is'to provide a wrench having quick-adjustable jaw of simple and durable construction. A further object is to provide a wrench having jaws provided with extensions to. enable the wrench to reach into recesses or sockets, or other small places where a bolt head or a nut may be located.
With the above-mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in an adjustable angle wrench having novel structural features affording relative angularity of the jaws and the handle thereof to greater or lesser degrees and in either one of two directions; the invention consisting also further in novel parts and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter particularly described and further defined in the appended claim.

The improved wrench comprises a handle or arm 1 WlllCh preferably is straight and near one end has a relatively thicker and broader head portion 2 which has two perallel ears 3 and 4 thereon that are provided near tllQlI ends witha pivot 5. The head portion of the handle has an aperture 6 therein that extends slightly into the ears and has an aXle 7 therein that is connected. with the adjacent wall portions of the aperture, the axle being arranged transversely relatively to the pivot 5. An angle adjuster is provided whichcomprises a body portion 8 arranged in the aperture 6 and rotatable on the axle 7 and having screw threads 9 thereon. The tops or edges of the screw threads preferably are milled or roughened, so that while the angle adjuster constitutes a worm it may be operated as a thumb wheel.
A straight bar 10 is provided to constitute a jaw base and is provided on one side there of with a gear segment 11 which is connected with the pivot 5 between the ears 3 and 41 and has gear teeth 12 on its curved edge that are engaged by the screw threads 9 of the angleadjuster. One end of the base bar 10 has a wrench jaw 13 integral therewith that extends from the front 0r side opposite to that from which the gear segment extends, and the bar 10 has a cen tral rib 14: thereon extending from the jaw to the opposite end of the bar, a suitable number of ratchet teeth 15 being integral with the rib. An adjustable jaw 16 is provided which has a base extension 17, the
jaw being slidingly arranged on the bar 10 and having bearing portions 18 and 19 there in that are guided on the bar 10 on opposite sides respectively of the rib 14;, the base portion of the jaw having side guides 20 and 21 extending against the opposite sides of the bar 10, said guides having guide flanges 22 and 23 respectively that engage the bar 10 on opposite sides of the gear segment 11. Preferably the outside of the guides 20 and 21 are provided with blunt teeth or roughened faces 24 and 25 respectively to permit quick movement of the jaw by hand. The adjustable jaw has a recess 26 therein that is connected with a recess 27 formed in the base extension 17, the recess 26 having a pivot 28 therein that is secured to the jaw and supports a dog 29 having ratchet teeth 30 that engage the ratchet teeth 15 the dog having an operating arm 31 that is normally projected by means of a spring 32 arranged behind it in the recess 26. The dog is arranged in the aperture 27 and the arm. 31 projects slightly from the aperture 26 so as not [0 be obstructive but permitting retraction of the arm by hand.
The end of the jaw 13 preferably has a screw-threaded socket. 33 therein, the jaw 16 likewise having a screw-threaded socket 34 therein. A jaw extension 35 has a screwthreaded shank 36 that is inserted in the socket 33 and detaehably secures the extension to the jaw 13, a similar jaw extension 37 having a shank 38 which is likewise secured to the relatively adjustable jaw 16. The jaw extensions have beveled backs so that their ends are relatively small and may be entered into sockets to reach a nut which might not be reached by the jaws of ordinary length.
In practical use the operator places a thumb and finger on the screw threads 9 to rotate the angle adjuster, the rotation of which causes the gear segment 11 to be turned adjustably on the pivot 5. The angle adjuster may be turned in either direction, so that the jaws may be set at different'angles and in either one or the opposite direction as may be required, in order that the handle or arm of the wrench shall extend at the required angle for convenient use of the wrench relatively to the jaws thereof. In some cases it may be an advantage to set the jaw over more or less as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be more desirable to set the jaws over in the opposite direction as indicated by broken lines. In order to bring the jaw 16 over toward the jaw 13, it is only necessary to push it by hand, the dog 29 being permitted to drag over the ratchet teeth 15 and become locked thereto when adjusted. Upon retracting the arm 31 so as to retract the dog from the ratchet teeth, the jaw 16 may be quickly moved out to receive a. relatively larger nut between the jaws.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In an adjustable angle wrench, the combination of a handle member with two cars thereon, the member having an aperture therein extending into the ears, a pivot con nected to the ears, a straight base bar arranged in close proximity to said ears and having a stationary jaw at one end of one side thereof and also a toothed rib extending from the jaw to the opposite end of the bar, a gear segment integral with the opposite side of said bar and connected with said pivot, said segment being arranged between said ears and extending into said aperture, a worm gear rotatable in said aperture in engagement with said segment and having a roughened peripheral portion, an adjustable jaw slidableon said base bar and movable off from the opposite end of the bar, a dog connected to said adjustable jaw and engaging the teeth of said rib, an extension member detachably secured to the end of said stationary jaw, and an extension member detachably secured to the end of said adjustable jaw.
