Application filed. March 1 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J SIDNEY BACHTEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Higgins, in the county of Lipscomb and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Stools, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to folding stools.

One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a folding stool of simple construction and operation which may be produced at small cost. A further object is to provide a stool so constructed as to be readily convertible into a sun-shade or umbrella, or a cane, optionally. Another object is to provide a stool which may be quickly and easily set up or taken down and folded so as to occupy but very little space. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.

Broadly stated, the stool is comprised of a supporting stand formed by a plurality of supporting rods secured together in cross and triangular arrangement, and a flexible seat secured to the upper ends of these rods. The rods 1 and 2 are pivotally secured together at their approximate centers by a pin 3 passed through the same. This pin projects beyond the underface of rod 2 and serves to pivotally support a securinghook 4 mounted thereon at its upper end. This hook is adapted to engage through an eye 5 secured in a third rod 6 which is independent of rods 1 and 2. This third rod is ,further provided with an eye 7 disposed substantially at right angles to eye 5 and adapted to receive the outer arm of a hook 8 fixedly secured in rod 1. The eye 7 and hook 8, and eye 5 and hook 4, are so related as to releasably secure free rod 6 1n an inclined position Specification of Letters Patent.

extending through the lower angle formed by rods 1 and 2. By this means, the three rods are secured in crossed triangular arrangement so as to provide a supporting stand for the flexible seat 9 which may be formed of canvas or other suitable material. This seat is provided, at each corner of its forward edge, with the triangular securing members 10 and 11 which are adapted to be inserted into the eyes 12 and 18 secured in the upper ends of rods 1 and 2, respectively, these eyes being slightly open so as to permit insertion or removal of members 10 and 11. Supporting strips 14 and 15 are inserted through members 10 and 11, respectively, one end of these strips being secured to the back bar 16 secured in seat 9 at the back thereof, and the other ends of these strips being secured through a triangular securing member 17 which is fastened to the inner face of back bar 16. A supporting bar 18 is secured to back bar 16 in parallel spaced relation thereto, and is provided at its outer end with an ofiset or recess 19, and at its inner end with a similar ofl'set 20. Bar 18 is adapted to be inserted into an eye 21 secured in the upper end of free rod 6. By placing the eye 21 through offset 19 and turning rod 6 through an arc of approximately 90, the rod 18 is inserted into eye 21, after which the rod 6 is moved so as to bring eye 21 into the offset 20. When in this position, eye 21 is at the center of the back edge of the seat, the seat thus being secured at three points so as to be supported by the rods 1, 2, and 6, as in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

Rod 6 is provided, a short distance from its upper end, with an eye 22 fixedly secured thereto. The distance from the upper end of rod 6 to eye 22 corresponds approximately to the height of eye 21. By this construction, by releasing hook 8 and eye 7, and disengaging hook 4 from eye 5, the two cross rods 1 and 2 may rod 6 until the upper face of rod 1 is brought into engagement with the underface of back bar 16 of the seat, thus bringing the hook 4 into position for engagement with the eye 22. By securing this hook through the eye 22, rods 1 and 2 will be firmly secured in horizontal position so as to hold the seat 9 extended, the rod6 being in a vertical position. This provides a sun-shade which may be held by rod 6, this rod constituting the handle of this shade. This will be clear from Fig. 5

If desired, suitable rods or pins may be inserted into these bores so as to permit the corners of a piece of fabric, such as a handkerchief, or other suitable cloth to be secured to the ends of the rods, the inner corners of this cloth being pinned or otherwise secured to the fabric seat 9. By doing this, the area of the sun-shade thus produced may be materially increased.

Rod 1 is provided with a rectangular hook 25 fixedly secured therein above the pin-3, the outer arm 26 of this hook beino: directed longitudinally of the rod and beyond'the upper end thereof. Arm 26 of this hook, is adapted to be inserted into a bore 27 in the lower end of rod 6. Rod 1 is furtherprovided, adjacent its upper end and in its inner face with a recess 28 which cooperates with a similar recess 29 in rod 2, when the rods 1 and 2 are in parallelism, to provide a receiving socket for eye 5 of rods 6, the distancevfrom hook 25 to this socket corresponding-to the distance from the lower end of rod- 6 to eye 5. Rod 1 is further provided with a pin 30 secured therein and cooperating with a similar pin 31 secured in rod-2 to provide a fastening pin or member which engages over the rounded portion of eye 5, when this eye is inserted into the socket formed by recesses 28 and 29, so as to secure the 'eye betweenrods I and'2. ,By detaching seat 9 and releasing rod 6 from-rodsl' and 2, and then 'movingrrods; 1'; and2 into parallelism, rod 6 may be readilysecured to rods 1 and-2 by inserting the outer" arnr 26 of hook 25 into the bore 27 and then forcing eye 5 into the socket formed by recesses 28 and 29 so as to be secured therein by the pins 80 and 31. When thus secured, rod'6 is parallel with rods 1 and 2, and is positioned between these two rods so as to effectually prevent relative movement between the same, alsoextending above rods 1 and 2, thecthree rods thus assembled forming a device which may be used as a cane or walking stick. What I claim is:

1. In a folding stool, two rods pivotally secured together at their approximate centers, a third rod independent of the said two other rods andadapted to be inserted beneath the central portions thereof when said two rods are spread apart, coiiperating hooksv and eyes carried by said rods and so relatively disposed as to releasably secure said free rod at an inclination between the said pivotallyconnected rodsandbelow the pivotal -axis,-thereof, and a seat secured on the upperends of said rods.

5. In afolding stool, two rods pivotally secured together at their approximate centers, a third rod independent of the said two other rods and adapted to be inserted beneath the central portions thereof when said two rods are spread apart, an eye carried by the third rod, a hook fixedly secured in one of the said two rods and having its outer arm disposed longitudinally Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the thereof, said third rod being provided in its lower end with a bore to receive the outer arm of said fixed hook, the said two pivotally connected rods being provided with recesses and pins adjacent their upper ends operating to provide a receiving socket and securing means when the rods are in folded position, and the distance from the lower end of the said third rod corresponding to the distance from the fixed hook to the said receiving socket and securing means whereby the third rod may be secured to the pivotally connected rods so as to project above the same by inserting the outer arm of the hook into said bore and then inserting said eye into the receiving socket and securing means.
