To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EVERETT L. THOMP- soN, of Dover, Morris county, New Jersey, and CHARLES W. TRIBKEN, of borough of Brooklyn, Kings county, city and State of New York, citizens of the United States, have made a certain new and useful Invention Relating to Chemical Fire-Extinguishing Apparatus, of which the following 1s a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms part of the same.
This invention relates especially to automatic fire extinguishing apparatus in which under fire emergency conditions supplemental extinguishing liquid is applied to the distributing system as by the emergency action of a chemical supply tank so as to be discharged at the desired high pressure from the operating distributing device. The chemical mixing devices cooperating with this chemical tank may be brought into emergency action by the suction created in the substantially closed upper part of the distributing system by the commencement of flow from the opened distributing device, this suction impulse acting through a suitable pneumatic suction connection or actuating pipe which is protected against injury by being inclosed in a liquid filled casing, such as a suction protector pipe which may form part of the distributing system or be connected therewith.
In the accompanying drawings showing in a somewhat diagrammatic way illustrative embodiments of the invention- Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of one form of the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a modified arrangement.
As shown in a somewhat diagrammatic way in Fig. 1 the distributing system may comprise a series of distributing lines 2, 3, 4, provided with suitable distributing devices such as the automatic sprinklerheads 11 and connected through the riser or supply pipe 1, for instance, with any suitable supply of extinguishing liquid, such for example as the chemical tank 26 containing carbonate extinguishing liquid 27 so that under emergency conditions the chemically developed pressure forces this liquid up through the strainer 28 at the lower end of this supply connection or pipe 1 and past Specification ocmms Patent. l t t 1918. The distributing system may be normally charged with any suitable extinguishing liquid, such for example, as a non-freezing solution for low temperature work, the entire distributing system being preferably filled so as to secure the more rapid discharge from any distributing device which comes into action. A suitable priming actuating tank, such as 12, may be connected in any desired or convenient way to the distributing system so as to supply thereto extinguishing liquid under suitable pressure at the commencement of flow from any of the distributing devices. This priming tank may, if desired, be provided with the gage glass 14 to observe the extent to which the liquid fills the tank anda venting aperture 13 preferably of pinhole size inay also be provided at the upper end of this tank to take car-e of slight temperature expansion.
Under emergency conditions the liquid 16 which flows rom the priming actuating tank creates a pressure reduction or suction 1n the upper part of the tank and connected distributing system which is nearly or substantially closed under these conditions so that this suction impulse is available for actuating anyv desired emergency device which may be utilized for the supply of supplemental extinguishing liquid to the distributing system. For this purposea pneumatlc suction connection or actuating pipe 15 may extend from the upper end of the system, such as the upper part of the actuating tank, for instance, to any suitable emergency device, such as the starting connected with the end 43 of the suction pipe and which may have one leg 22 dipping into the sulfuric or other acid 29 in the acid chamber 18 while its other or discharge le 25 may communicate with the chemical tan 26 and may, for example, extend within the priming cup or container 24 containing a suitable quantity of similar acid or liquid neutral thereto, so that when the suction impulse takes place the acid quickly fills the siphon sufiiciently'to cause its emergency operation and discharge the acid into the carbonate liquor 27 in the chemical tank, the

This suction pipe may therefore be inclosed in the suction protector pipe 10 extending around this suction pipe throughout sub-, stantially its entire extent so as to make'it, practically impossible for its accidental in-. jury to occur without at once calling atten-, tion to such a condition through escape: of liquid. Under these conditlons it is desirable for some purposes to have one or more reduced 1 actuating connections, such as 7, between the distributing system and the actuating tank or this. suction protector pipe connected thereto-which serves to supply the initial flow of extinguishing liquid to the system under emergency conditions By properly proportioning the size of such an actuating connection the rate of flow under fire conditions can be so arranged as to secure the emergency actuation of the chemical 'mixing means or desired time interval. For example, the con nection 7 may with advantage be made somewhat smaller than the connection 9 coiiperating with. the upper part of the dis tributing system and suitable difference in efiective area which may be inversely proportional to the effective head on the connected distributing devices maybe made where: these actuating connections lead to more or less separated distributing lines or devices. It is also desirable: to provide a suitable draindevice, such as the drain valve 17v inthe lower part of the suctionprotector pipe 10 so that any remaining liquidmay be withdrawn therefrom after the emer- I gency action of the apparatus has occurred, 5

.This invention has been described in connection with a number of illustrative embodiments, forms, proportions, materials, arrangements and numbersof parts, to the details of which disclosure the invention is not of course to be limited, since what is claimed as new and whatis'desired to be secured by Letters Patent is set-forth in the appended claims.

In chemical fire extinguishing apparatus, a distributing system normally charged with non-freezing extinguishing liquid and comprising distributing lines and connected automatic distributing devices, a supplemental supply et-extinguishing liquid comprising a chemical pressure tank and cooperating chemical mixing'devices, a valved supply pipe connection between said tank, and said distributing system, a priming actuating tank charged with liquid adapted to be connected to said distributing system to'supply liquid to the system on thebegim ning of flow from the distributing devices, a pneumatic suction pipe extending adjacent the top of said actuating tank and con nected to said chemical mixing devices to effect their emergency operation, a liquid filled suction protector pipe inclosing said suction actuating pipe, between said actuating tank and said chemical mixing means and serving to connect said actuating tank to said system and a' drain device adjacent the bottom of said protector pipe.

In chemical fire extinguishing apparatus, a distributing system normally charged with extinguishing liquid and comprising distributing lines and connected distributing devices, a supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a chemical pressure tank and cooperating chemical mixing devices, a supply pipe connection between said tank and said distributing system, a priming actuating tank charged with liquid connected to said distributing system to supply liquid to the system on the beginning of flow from the distributing devices, a pneumatic suction pipe extending adjacent the top of said actuating tank and chemical mixing devices to effect their emergency operation and a liquid filled suction protector pipe inclosing said suction actuating pipe between said actuating tank and said chemical mixing means.
6. In fire extinguishing apparatus, a distributing system normally charged with extinguishing liquid and comprising distributing devices, a supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a pressure tank connected to said distributing system, a primary actuating tank charged with liquid connected to said distributing system, to supply liquid to the system on the beginning of flow from the distributing devices, a pneumatic suction pipe connected adjacent the top of said system and connected to said pressure tank to elfect its emergency operation and a liquid filled suction protector pipe connected to said system and inclosing portions of said suction actuating pipe between said actuating tank and said pressure tank.
7. In fire extinguishing apparatus, a distributing system normally charged with extinguishing liquid and comprising distributing devices, a supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a pressure tank connected to said distributing system, a pneumatic suction pipe connected adjacent the top of said system and connected to said pressure tank to effect its emergency operation and a liquid filled suction protector pipe inclosing portions of said suction actuating pipe.
8. In chemical fire extinguishing apparatus, a distributing system normally charged with non-freezing extinguishing liquid and comprising separated distributing lines and connected automatic distributing devices, an emergency device including a supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a chemical pressure tank and cooperating chemical mixing devices, a supply pipe connection between said emergency device and said distributing system, a priming actuating tank charged with liquid adapted to be connected to said distributing system to supply liquid to the system on the beginning of flow from the distributing devices, a pneumatic suction pipe connected adjacent the top of said system and connected to said emergency device to effect its emergency operation, a liquid filled suction protector pipe inclosing said suction actuating pipe between said actuating tank and said emergency device and serving to connect said priming tank to said system and different sized reduced actuatin connections between said protector pipe an the distributing lines on different levels, the eflective area of said actuating connections being inversely proportional to the effective head on theirdistributing devices.

In chemical fire extinguishing apparatus, a distributing system normally charged with extinguishing liquid and comprising separated distributing lines and connected automatic distributing devices, an emergency device including a supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid, a supply pipe connection between said emergency device and said distributing system, a priming actuating tank charged with liquid adapted to be connected to said distributing system tosupply liquid to the system on the beginning of flow from the distributing devices, a pneumatic suction pipe connected adjacent the top of saidsystem and connected to said emergency device to effect its emergency operation, a liquid filled suction protector pipe inclosing said vsuction actuating pipe betweensaid actuating tank and said emergency device and difierent sized reduced actuating connections between said actuating tank and :thedistributing lines on different levels, the effective area of said actuating connections being inversely proportional .to efi'ective head on their distributing devices.

In chemical fire extinguishing apparatus, v a distributing system normally charged with extinguishing liquid and comprising-separated distributing'lines and connected automatic. distributing devices, an emergency device, a priming actuating tank charged with liquid adapted to be connected to said distributing system to supply liquid to the'system on the beginning of flow from the distributing devices, a suction pipe connected adjacent the top of said system and connected to said emergency device to effect its emergency operation, a liquid filled suction protector pipe inclosing said suction actuating pipe and different sized reduced actuating connections between said actuating tank and'the distributing lines on difierent levels.
11. In chemical fire extinguishing apparatus, a, distributing system normally charged with extinguishing liquid and comprising separated distributing lines and connected automatic distributing devices, an
emergency device, a priming actuating tank charged with liquid adapted to be connected to said distributing system to supply liquid to the system on the beginning of flow from the distributing devices, a suction pc connected adjacent the top of said s em and connected to said emergency device} to effect its emergency operation and different sized reduced actuating connections bdyveen said actuating tank and the distributinggj-lines ,on diflerent levels. i

In fire extinguishing apparatus, a dis tributing system normally charged with extinguishing liquid and comprisingvdistributing lines and connected automatic distributing' devices, an emergency deviceinclud-v ing a supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid, a priming actuating tank charged with. liquid connected to said distributing system to supply liquid to thesystem on;the beginning offlow from the distributing devices, an emergency actuating pipe connected adjacent the top of said system and connected to said emergency device to effect its emergency operation and a liquid filled suction protector pipe inclosing at least the greater portions of said, actuating pipe.
13. In fire extinguishing apparatus, a distributing system normally charged with extinguishing liquid and comprising distributing lines and connected automatic distributing devices, an emergency device, an emergency actuating pipe connected adjacent the top of said system and connected to said emergency device to eflectits emergency operation and a liquid filled suction protector pipe inclosing portions of said actuating pipe. Tribken, of Brooklyn, New York, for an improvement in Chemical Fire-Extinguishing Apparatus, an error appears in the printed specification requiring correction as follows: Page 4, lines 70 and 80, claims 12 and 13, strike out the Word suction and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
