IGNITION-MAGNETO FOR FOUR-CYLINDER INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
. Specification of Letters I'atent. A Patented Nov, 19, 1918.
Application filed July 25, 1917. Serial No. 182,809.
armature, and this arrangement entails a certain amount of complication from a con- 'ject to provide an improved apparatus structional point of view. With the object of remedying this drawback, an arrangement of the winding of the armature has already been proposed in such a manner as to produce in the case of a double T Siemens armature, four sparks per revolution, that is to say, two sparks simultaneously at each 180 of the armature. When the magneto is employed-for the purpose of igniting a *l-cylinder engine, in such a case two sparks will be produced simultaneously, namely, one spark in one cylinder during the period of compression, and the other spark in a cylinder during the period of exhaust.
In such an arrangement the two sparking plugs at which these two sparks are simultaneously produced, have hitherto been situated in'one and the same secondary circuit, the inlet and outlet of which are connected to two contacts of the distributer and should be completely insulated.
Constructions of that kind have the two following main drawbacks 1. From an electrical point of view the two sparks occur in media that oppose different resistances. The spark produced in the cylinder in which compression is taking place, will encounter in the compressed mixture a higher resistance than the spark occurring in the cylinder in which exhaust is taking place. Consequently the former spark which alone serves a useful urpose is weak. whereas the other spark which is of no utility, is a strong spark.
,2. From a constructional point of view the insulation of the two ends of the secondary circuit presents various difiiculties, more particularly in machines of small size.
The present invention has now for its lobt at will remedy the above stated drawbacks.
This improved apparatus is characterized circuit f essentially by the. provision of two independent secondary circuits each having 1ts point of departure in the framing of the machine, and feeding respectively the two sparking plugs at which the sparks are to be produced simultaneously.
In these circumstances, these two sparking plugs into which the current is passed simultaneously by the distributor, .are fed by two distinct secondary circuits, and the spark produced at each of these plugs will have its maximum intensity.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 illustrates by way of example in a diagrammatic manner one way of constructing, the improved apparatus according to this invention, and f Fig. 2 illustrates a modification thereof.
In the example of the apparatus illustrated in Fig. 1, the armature has two cores (1, b the primary circuit 0 is wound on these two cores and its ends are connected in the usual manner on one hand to the framing d of the machine and on the other hand to an interrupter e of known construction. Each of the cores (1, b is wound with a secondary g, the ends of which are connected on one hand likewise to the framing d and on the other hand to the two contacts h i of a distributer j ofthe usual construction.
These contacts in rotating come into contact with the two brushes is Z connected to the two sparking plugs m n where the sparks are to be produced simultaneously, and with the two brushes 0 p connected to the sparking plugs q r of the other two cylinders. I
Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the armature comprises a single core on whlch are wound the two secondary circuits 7 g. The ends of these last two circuits are connected in the same manner as in the preceding example.
The rotary core 8 on which the contacts 72. i are mounted, rotates at the. same speed as the armature of the magneto, and these contacts are located in such amanner that at each rupture of the primary ClI'Clllt, they will be either opposite the brushes is] or opposite the brushes 0 7). Thus for instance in the position shown in the figure, the two sparks will be produced at the two sparking plugs m n, and when the armature shall have rotated through 180, the contacts h and. 5 having come into. contact w1th the brushes o p, the two sparks will be produced at the two sparking plugs g r.
It is to be understood that the constructional details of the improved apparatus 5 may be modified according to the purposes for which it is to be used.
What I claim is a In an ignition magneto for a four-cylinder internal combustion engine, a single 1 collector, having two contacts 90 apart, a
double transformer comprising two separate secondary windings connected respectiyely to said two contacts and four brushes 90 apart connected respective to four sparking plugs, said brushes rub ing 15 upon the contacts of the collector.
