"My invention aims to provide a simple and etlicient lock for holding the switch points or tongues in the position which they assume when the main line is in use and to this end the novel construction hereinafter full described and claimed is provided, this eonstriu-tion being shown in the accompanyin drawing which constitutes a part of this specification and in which:

Under the present invention the plate 6 is automatically moved to this position (see Fig. 1) when the lever 5 is swung in one direction to close the switch, and when said lever is rgw'ersed to change the position of" the tongues 1. moved to a reverse position as indicated in Fig. 2. These results are attained by the operating connections now to be described. A shaft 11 extends from one of the journals 8 and is secured thereto by an appropriate coupling 12, theouter end of said shatt being mounted in a bearing bracket 13 which rises from of the shaft 11 carries a. pinion 15 meshing with rack teeth 16 on the lower side of one end of a bar 17 which extends parallel with the. rails, the other end of said bat-having teeth .18 meshing with a pinion 1!) on the rock shat't and -l. the bar 17 is slidably mounted in earing hracketsQO rising from the base 14.

By the construction described, turning of the lever 5 from the position of Fig. 1 will produce the following moven'ients:
Shaft l shifts the rack from operative position, and while this is taking place, shaft 4: and the gearing 81 32 urn shaft 29, but due to the pin and slot connect-ion ill-27, turning of said shaft 29 does not aii ect the -bridle bar 2 until the locking plate 6 has raised sutiiciently to permitthe points 1 to move. By the time this position of the locking plate has been reached, however, one end of the slot 2'7 strikes pin 26, so that the continued movement of the shaft 29 will shift the bridle bar to open the switch shown in Fig. :2. During this movement of bar 2, the
elastic section thereof does not come into play, but acts when the switch is being again closed.
"When the switch stands open, the several parts are positioned as shown in Figs. 2, 3, l, 8 and 9. To now close the switch, the lever 5 is swungto the right (Fig. l.) This movement causes rack bar 17 to start movto operative position and at the same time, the shaitfZQ and its disk 28 start shifting the bridle bar to move the switch tongues to the position of Fi 1, said disk now turning in the direction of the arrow of 9. The right hand tongue 1 (Figs. 1 and strikes the main track rail about the time that the locking plate (3 reaches the dotted line position oi. Fig. 3 and since the major portion of the bridle bar 2 can then move no farther, the elastic section thereof comes into phi to permit the continued operation required to move plate 43 to its operative position 1 and (3).
From the "foregoing description taken in bar 17 so as to. turn shaft 11 to raise the locking plate 6 connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be observed that although the invention is of extremely simple and nexpensive nature, it will be highly elhcient and durahie. For these reasons, the construction shown and described constitutes the preferred embodiment of the lock but it to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed. numerous changes may be made without sacrificing the principal advantages.
I claim:
1. The combination with a pair of switch tongues, a pair of line rails with which the same cooperate. and means for shifting said tongues including a rock shaft, of a secondroclt shaft parallel to the first, a vertically swinging lock plate to which said second shaft is connected, said lock plate cooperating with the switch tongues to hold them against movement. pinions on the two.
rock shafts, and a bar extending transversely of said meshing with said pinions.
2. The combination with a pair oi switch tongues, a pair oi line rails with which they cooperate. and means "for operating said tongues including a rock shatt; of a tongue locking plate extending transversely between said line rails at the tree ends of the tongues and having notches in one edge adapted to receive said ends to hold them in one position, rotatably mounted journals )rojecting from the ends of the locking plate, one of said journals being extended in the form of a rock shaft, pinions on the two rock shafts, a liar extending transversely of said shafts and having teeth meshing with both pinions, and means for slidably supporting said bar.
