To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE C. BRYANT, of Clinton, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Electric- Light Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My present invention relates to electric light supports and particularly to such supports as are intended to be adjustably attached to a sewing machine or' other machine or articles near which special illumination is desired.
The purpose of my present invention is to provide an electric light support of improved form and of such construction that it may be readily applied in a great variety of ways. a
A further object is to provide such a support as may be readily adjusted in a very great variety of ways to the end that with one of my devices light may be supplied as needed to a great variety of sewing niachines or other machines or situations.
A further purpose is to provide an article of the class described wherein the standard of the support and the tube bearing the electric light socket are connected by a single clamp of such form that by loosening a single member there may be relative 1ongitudinal adjustment of either or both the standard and tube in the clamp and also circumferential adjustment of either or both the 7 standard and tube in the clamp and furthermore an angular adjustment between the said tube and the standard.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will appear from the specification and claims herein.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of an electric light support embodying my invention as i applied to the arm of a sewing machine.

In this way it will be seen that the band is attachable to and detachable from any desired oblject without special tools and that the band may-be adjusted in various positions upon said article and furthermore that a considerable latitude is allowed in the size of the article to which a stock band may be applied.
Permanently and rigidly connected to the band and projebting preferably radially therefrom is a standard 12 preferably circular in cross-section and conveniently J formed of tubular material, the end of which near the band 6 is split and has its ends turned outward and fitted against the outer Patented Nov. 19, 31918;
surface of the band and fastened thereto as :by rivets 13.
Fincircling the standard 12 is a looped V band 14- having its ends 15 and 16 turned outwardly facing each other at a slight distance apart and oppositely perforated to receive therethrough the shank of a bolt 2 17 the head of which is preferably spaced from the projecting end 15 of this band by washer 18 while the shank of the bolt extends a sufiicient distancebeyond the other Upon the projecting shank of said bolt is placed a perforated block 19 orother suitable spacing member. The end of bolt 17 projects beyond the block 19 and there extends through the holes provided in the out-turned ends 20 and 21 of a looped band 22 similar in construction to looped band 14. The ends 20 and 21 of this band preferably extend in a radial direction from the band 22 and also are preferably slightly spaced apart when the band is upon the tube 23 of proper size. Beyond the band ends 20 and 21 the bolts 17 receives a nut 24, preferably winged as shown in the drawings for band end 20 will preferably be placed a washer 25.
.The tube 23 comprises the other arm of my adjustable light support and is adapted at one end to have fastened thereto an ordinary electric light socket 26 which receives in the usual Way an incandescent ele.-tric light bulb 27 and also a combined shade and reflector 28. From the socket 26 there extends through the tube 23 the usual electric light wire 29 passing out from the free end of the said tube to any suitable connection therefor. I
The parts of the clamp comprising the looped band 14, the spacing block 19 and the looped band 22 and the bolt 17 and winged nut 24 are so proportioned and arranged relative to each other and tothe standard 12 and tube 23 that screwing up the winged nut 24 makes both bands bind tightly upon their inclosed members and also cause both bands tobe held in rigid position relatlve to each other upon the spacing block 19 and again tightened the said parts will be held in the position to which they have been moved.
It will also be seen that upon loosening said bolt and nut the looped band 22 will have its grasp upon the tube 23 sufiiciently loosened to enable the tube 23 to be moved longitudinally through said band 22 or may also be rotated or moved circumferentially in said band whereby the position and direction of said electric light may be further varied.
vUpon the said screw-threaded members being again tightened the parts will be securely fastened in the position to which they have been moved.
When the members of said clamp are loosened a still further adjustment of the members of my electric light support may be had in that the angular relation of the bands 14 and 22 may be varied as far as needed allowing the tube 23 to be changed from its position at right angles to the standard 12 to any desired angle thereto. It
' will be noticed that the spacing block 19 is of suflicient length to allow of this angular adjustment of the looped bands 14 and 22 and their contained members respectively without said bands or contained members striking each other as will be obvious especially from an inspection of Fig. 2. When the tube 23 has been moved to desired angle relative to the standard 12, tightening of the screw-threaded members of the clamp will secure the light in desired position.
The modification of my device shown in Fig. 3 consists in having the standard formed in two parts, one part 30 secured to the band 6 as heretofore described with regard to standard 12 and having its free end Upon the part 33 of this standard is mounted the clamp consisting of two looped bands, spacing block and screw-threaded means for tightening the same and the tubular member 23 to the free end of which is secured an electric light socket and light of proper form as heretofore described in detail. The free end of the standard part 30 in this form is split longitudinally from its end in one or more places and is provided with an encircling band 34 with outwardly extending perforated ends 35 receiving a bolt and winged nut 36. It will be seen that this form of the standard allows a further adjustment of the electric light support in that the portion 31 of the part 32 of the standard can be adjusted longitudinally relative to the fixed part 30 and may also be swung circumferentially in the said part 30.
Fig. 4 shows in side elevation another form of my invention. The tube 23 and standard-12 are the same as already described and are connected in a similar wav by a similar clamp already described in detail. The means for holding the standard 12 are different, in that a base or pedestal 37 is used to which the standard 12 is secured. The base or pedestal 37 may be made heavy enough to support the entire device in proper position and allow the entire device to be fully portable or the base or pedestal may be secured to a table or Work platform by screws or bolts or other obvious means.
What I claim as new and desire .to secure by Letters Patent is: I
1. In an electric light support, the combination of a split-band adapted to be, adjustably secured to a suitable object. a standard permanently secured to said band and projecting therefrom, a bracket member adapted at one end to support an electric light socket and a clamp comprising two looped bands encircling respectively the bracket member and the standard and having outwardly projecting perforated ends, a perforated block interposed between the pro ecting ends of said bands and holdsaid block, whereby said standard and said bracket member may be adjusted longitudinally through and circumferentially in said clamp and also adjusted at any angle to each other.
2. In an electric light support, the combination of a split band adapted to be detachably secured to a suitable object, a standard permanently secured to said band and projecting therefrom, a tube adapted to be secured at one end to an electric light socket and to have the electric wires therefor passed through said tube from the open end and a clamp comprising two looped bands encircling respectively the tube and the standard and having outwardly projecting perforated ends, a perforated block interposed between the projecting-ends of said bands and holding said two pairs of band ends and said bands from contact with each other and adjustable pressure-exerting means extending through the perforated band ends and said block, whereby said standard andsaid tube may be adjusted longitudinally through and circumferentially in said clamp and also at any angle to each other.
3. In an electric light support, the comtachably secured to a suitable object, a standard permanently secured to said band and projecting therefrom, a tube adapted to be secured at one end to an electric light socket and to have the electric wires therefor passed through said tube from the open end and a clamp comprising two looped bands encirclingrespectively the tube and the standard and having outwardly projecting perforated ends, a perforated block interposed between the projecting ends of said bands and holding said two pairs of band ends and said bands from contact with each other and screw-threaded means extending through the'perforated band ends and said block, whereby said standard and said tube may be adjusted longitudinally through and circumferentially in said clamp and also at any angle to each other.
4. In an electric light support, the combination of a standard, a tube adapted to be secured at one end to an electric light socket and to have the electric wires there-- for passed through said tube from the open end and a clamp comprising two looped bands encircling respectively the tube and the standard and having outwardly projecting perforated ends, a perforated block interposed between the projecting ends of said band and holding said two pairs of band ends and said bands from contact with each other and screw-threaded means extending through the perforated band ends and said block, whereby said standard and said tube may be adjusted longitudinally through and circumferentially in said clamp and also at any angle to each other.
