Description
H.F 0LGER. PROPELLER. APPLICATION vFILED MAR. 2. 191B.

NETE@ PATEN OBFOE.
HORACE FOLGER, OF GOODING, IDAHO.
PROPELLER.
Application led March 2, 1918.
To all wwm t may concern:
Be it known that HORACE FoLonR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gooding, in the county of Gooding and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Propellers, of which the following is a specification.
rIhis invention relates to propellers, and more particularly to propellers adapted for use on boats, although it is of course to be understood that it is equally applicable to other uses such as aeroplanes.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide an improved form of screw propeller having its parts so constructed, positioned and arranged as to obtain the maximum efficiency per revolution or permit equal power at slower rotation.
Another object is to provide a propeller of the above general character which may be inexpensively manufactured and capable of adjustment to the blades of propellers of different pitch.
Other objects will be in part obvious from the annexed drawing and in part indicated in connection therewith by the following analysis of this invention.
T his invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of parts, and in the unique relations of the members and in the relative proportioning and disposition thereof, all as more completely outlined herein.
To enable others skilled in the art so fullv to comprehend the underlying features thereof that they may embody the same by the numerous modifications in structure and relation contemplated by this invention, drawings depicting a preferred form have been annexed as a part of this disclosure, and in such drawings like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout all the views` in which- Figure l is a side elevation showing the propeller applied to a propeller shaft, and
ig. 2 is an end elevational view.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 5 denotes a propeller shaft of any desired type having a plurality of propeller blades 6. each propeller blade being provided with an attachment T which` by itself, is shaped like one-half of a funnel. that is any transverse section thereof will represent a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
Serial No. 220,040.
semi-circle rather than the element of a screw which involves a reverse curve. These may be reinforced by stays 8 if desired.
One edge of this funnel is attached at 9 in any desired manner to the tail of one of the blades, while the opposite edge is secured also in any desired manner at the points 10 to the propeller shaft to extend at substantially a right-angle thereto. Each blade is provided with a similar member secured thereto and to the propeller shaft as above described, thus increasing the effective propelling surface as the medium will be fed over the shaft as well as parallel thereto. It will thus be seen that as the propeller rotates in the direction of the arrow the forward or nose edge of each blade will cut into the water or other medium and force the same relatively rearwardly against the curved surface of the attachment 7, thereby to propel the craftl to which it is attached.
lt will thus be seen that the present invention comprises a simple and practical propeller construction adapted to accomplish, among others, all of the objects and advantages herein set forth.
realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I there' fore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form shown and described.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A propeller mechanism comprising, in combination, a shaft having an extended portion, a plurality of blades mounted on said shaft short of the end thereof. and a plurality of semi-funnel shaped deflectors each secured at one edge to a propeller blade and at its opposite edge to the shaft.
2. A propeller mechanism comprising. in combination, a shaft having an extended portion, a plurality of blades mounted on. said shaft short of the end thereof and a plurality of semi-funnel shaped deflectors each secured at one edge to a propeller blade and at its opposite edge to the shaft, said deflectors being provided with reinforcing stays.
In testimony whereof l aiiix my signature.
HORACE FOLGER.
