To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, FRANoIs G GALE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Waterville, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, have invented an lImprovement in Bed-Bottoms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.

This invention relates to bed bottoms of that type which areformed of a plurality of V-shapedlinks arranged in rows extendingtransversely across the bed bottom, each link having hooks at its free end which hook into the apices of the links of the next adjacent row.

last completerow of links, and the connection between the two springs and the corresponding three links is secured by connecting linksone for each spring, said connecting links being arranged in pairs and the links of eachpair being secured tothree links in the last row of V links. In order to pro vide for this connection atcach end of the bed bottom it has heretofore been customary to make the bed bottom in two sectionswhich are connected centrally of the bed bottom, the V links :ineach section being arrangedfwith their apices toward the adjacentend of the mattress frame or bed bottom. Where this construction is employed the connecting links may be ll-links similar in shape tofthejlinks forming the body of the bedbottom, It involves considerable labor to make the bedbottomdn two sections and then connect the sections together and connect each section tothe mattress frame, and one object of my invention is to provide a novel construction by which the bed bottom can all be made in one section and yet the proper connection between tress frame can be made at each end thereof. ll accomplish this by providing a special construction for the connection between the hooked ends of the links and the springs at the corresponding end of the mattress frame. The connecting link 11 is V-shaped and is provided with an eye 13 at the end of each arm there.

of. The link 12 is also V-shaped and is provided with an eye 14 at the end of one arm and a hook 15 at the end of the other arm. In using these links 11 and 12 to connect the last row a of links 1 to the spring 7 so as to providetwo springs-for each three links, I employ the links 11 and 12 in pairs, the apex of each link being connected to a spring 7. A link 11 is placed directly opposite every third link 1 in the row a and the hooked portions 2 of each third link 1 are hooked into the eyes 13 of the corresponding link 11. The link 12 is secured to the adjacent spring 7 and the hook 15 thereof is hooked into one of the eyes 13 of the link 11 and the eye 14 of said link 12 has engagement with the hook of one of the armsof the link '1 adjacent said third link. Said link 1 which is adjacent the third link is hooked into the eye 13 of the link 11 and the eye 14: of the link 12. The link 1 on the other side of said third link is hooked into the eye' 13 of the link 11 of one pair 11 and 12, and the eye 1 1 of the link 12 of the next adj acentpai'r. By this construction the required connection from the hooked ends of the links 1 in the row a can be made to the spring 7 connected with the end rail 5,

so that two springs 7 will be employed for each three links in the row a, as at the other end of the bed bottom. It is thus possible to make the body of the bed bottom in one section instead of two sections connected together at the center, and by. this means the manufacturing operation is greatly facilitated. At the same time, however, the same number of springs 7 is used at each end of the bed bottom.

The links 8, 18 are especially made so as to permit the springs 7 connecting said links with the end rails 6 to be evenly spaced.

Fig. 2 plainly shows'this. These links are each made with one leg slightly longer than the other, the links of each pair being arranged so that the longer legs of each pair are adjacent each other. For instance, in the link 8 the leg 20 is shorter than the other leg 21, while in the link 18 the leg 22 is longer than the leg 23. These links are arranged with the 1 longer legs 22, 21 adjacent each other, thus throwing the apices 10 of the Copies of this patent may be obtained for pairs of links farther apart than would be the case if the two legs of the link were of the same length. By this means the springs 7 are evenly spaced from each other and they stand in parallel lines.

Similarly, the links 11 and 12 are made with one leg longer than the other. In the link 12 the leg 25 is longer than the leg 24, and in the link 11, the leg 26 is longer than the leg 27. By this means the apices 30 of each pair of links 11 and 12 are situated slightly farther apart than the distance from one link 1 to the next link 1, and by properly proportioning the legs of the links the springs 7 may be equally spaced apart.

The edge of the bed bottom is made up of specially-constructed links 31 each having a long and a short leg, as best seen in Fig. 2.

I claim:

The combination with a mattress frame having side and end rails, of a bed bottom, the entire body of which is composed of V- shaped links arranged in rows extending transversely of the bed bottom, each link having hooks at the ends of its arms and the hooks of the links of each row being hooked into the apices of the links in the next adjacent row, all of the links of the bed bottom having their apices directed toward the same end of the mattress frame, means for connecting the apices of the last row of links at said end of the mattress frame to the corresponding end rail thereof, and a pair of V-shaped connecting links for connecting each adjacent set of three V-links in the last row at the other end, of the bed bottom to the corresponding end rail, each pair of V'- shaped connecting links comprising one link having eyes. at both ends of its legs and the other link of each pair having an eye at the end of one leg and a hook at the end of the other which hooks into an eye of the other link of the pair whereby each pair of connecting links presents three eyes into which the hooked ends of, said last row of V-links are hooked, and a spring connecting the apex of each connecting link to the end rail..
