Application filed December 31, 1917'. Serial No. 2052733.
spring thereof.
n iiiiportantobject of the invention is to. provide in a device of the above mentioned character a means whereby energy may be stored within the spring motor ofthe phono graph upon the raising and `lowering of the phonograph cover.
' A further object ofthe invention is to pr0- vide in a device of the above mentioned character a means whereby the several actuating elements employed iii the device as a whole may be retained in engagement one with the other during their respective oper-- ating` periods.
A further object of the vinvention is to provideV in a device of the above mentioned character a means whereby the various workineh elements employed in the device as a mole may be actuated with the least pos sible amount of noise and friction.
A' further object is to providea device of theabove mentioned'character which is siniple in construction. strong. durahlei'inex- Ypensive to uauiufacture. and reliable in operation. 4 l
Other obiccts and advantages of the in- *vention will be apparent during the 4course of the following description.
In the accompanjmng diawings toriuing a part of this specification and in which like iiiinierals are employed to. designate like vparts throughout the saine.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a phoiio graph showing the device embodying my invention attached thereto,
v iff Q a fraaniental vertical central sec- -tional view ofthe same,
` i i: 3 is a detail view of the device. and,
.in f Rig. l is a tragniental detail view of a 'double pawl and ratchet mechanism.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration shown. a preferred form of mv invention. the numeral indicates a .the winding shaft i' phonograph cabinet provided with a cover which is hiiigcdly connected thereto in a conventional manner. Ypon the winding shaft ofthe spring motor. not shown, there is tixediy secured a ratchet wheel 8 carrying a plurality of caniined faced teeth as indicated by the' numeral `S). yoke indicated by the numeral 10 is loosely mounted upon and is adapted to encircle 'the ratchet wheel S as clearlyv shown in Fig. 3, the end meii'ibers 11 thereof being spaced a suitable distance from the ratchet wheel 8 to permit the reception of a pair of arms indicated by the numerals 1:2 and 13 therebetweenI` the arms 12 and 13 being pr vided with a plurality of teeth 1l and 15 respectively. the .teeth 1i being oppositely pitched with respect to the teeth indicated' by the numeral 15. The arm 13 at its upper end is slightly curved as shown at 16 and is provided with an elongated shank 17 carrying at its upper end an ei'igaging head 1S through which aboltor pin 19 is adapted to be passed in order to secure the same to the cover 6 as clearly shown inV Figs. 2 and.
At the jointure of the shank 17 and the curved portion 16 of the arml 13 there is pivotally connected a second arm 12 by means of a bolt or rivet 20 passed through a vpair of flanges 21 and the end of the arm 12 retained therebetween, said flanges being carried b v a shank 17 as shown.
In order to retain the teeth let and 15 ofthe arms 12 and 13 respectively. normally in engagement with the teeth- 9 carried by the ratchet wheel S there is provided a .pair ofv coinpressible springs :22, one end of each spring being retained within the recess 23 carried by the end members 11. while the `other ends of the springs are adapted to engage the arms 12 and 13 as shown.
In use the operation ofthe device is asv follows:
Then the cover 6 is raised to the dotted line position shown in Fig. l the teeth. 15 carried by the arm 13 engage the teeth 9 carried by' the ratchet wheel 8 whereupon the same is 4rotated in a clockwise direction therebystoring energy within the spring of the spring motor, not shown. l/Vhen the cover 6 is moved to the full line position shown in Fig. 1 the teeth 1J: carried by the arm 1:2 engage the teeth 9 carried by the ratchet wheel S thereby imparting a clocki ricd h v the wisc rotar \v motion to thc ratchet wheel S. it will he understmid that uhcn the ratchet wheel S is being' rotated through the instru mentality ot' the teeth 15 that the tccth 9 carratchet Wheel 8 will more successively over theteeth l-.t carried by the arin l2 and that the teeth 9 will move successively over the teeth when the teeth ltengage the teeth 9 to impart rotary motion to the ratchet wheel S in a clockwise direction. It Will-be furtherunderstood that due to the change ot positionof they arms 1'2 and 13 with respect to the shaft 7 that the yoke 10 will loe` free to Oscillate about the shaft `7 to accommodate this change of position.
It is to be further understood that the form of my invention. herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the saine; and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of yparts may 4be resorted -toV Without departing from the spirit Vot the invention or the scope of the subjoinede'laim.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new and desire'v to secure and protect by Letters Patent in the `United States, is: l
In combination with a phonograph proa'ided uitha coter hingedly connected thereto and having a 'winding shaft ot means for imparting rotary motion in a clockwise direction to said Winding shaft upon the raising and lowering of saidcover, said means,l com'pijising an arm provided with a .pluralityT ot' teeth, ,said arm beingv pivotally connected to said cover; a second arin pivotally connected to the first mentioned arm and'provided with a plurality of teeth having a pitch opposite tothat of the teeth'carried by the first mentioned arm a ratchet Wheel )rovided with a plurality of teeth secured to said winding shaft; a 'yoke loosely mounted upon said winding shaft and encircling both ot said armsand said ratchet Wheel; a pair of springs carried by said yoke and having engagement with said arms. said springs serving as a means for normali)v retaining said arms in engagement with said ratchet Wheel.
