AUTOMATIC CONTACT-MAKING DEVICE FOR AN ELECTRIC CIRCUIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1918.
Application filed July 27, 1917. Serial No. 183,167.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT C. HARRIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at 50 Campbell Av., Indiana olis, in the county of Marion and State 0 Indiana, have invented an Automatic Contact-Making Device for an Electric Circuit to be Used in Railroad-Signaling.
This invention relates to an automatic contact making device for operatin signals. The idea is to use a separate insu ated circuit of Wires, instead of the present unreliable track circuit used in railroad signalmg.
The device is fastened to the outer edge of a T rail of a railroad track. When a train passes over this device, the wheels come in contact with the device, causing the disk to swing. Durin the swing of this disk the circuit is close The action of this mechanism is shown in the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a vertical view of the device. Fig. 2 is a horizontal view and Fig. 3 shows the action of the mechanism.
No. 1 is a binding post upon the disk, No. 2 is an insulated binding post upon the lever No. 6. No. 5 is an axle, fastened to an outside support, upon which the disk swings. No. 4:. is a pin, fastened to an outside support, which serves the double purpose of controllin the degree of the swing of the disk and o breaking the contact between bindin post No. 2 on the lever and contact pin 0. 3 on the disk.
Fig. 3 shows the position of the disk when contact is made between binding post No. 2 and contact pin No. 3.
Claim:
An automatic contact making device, comprising an axle, an elongated disk revolving upon the axle; a pivot mounted on said disk; an insulated lever, revolving upon said pivot upon said disk; a binding post for an electric circuit upon said disk; an insulated binding post for an electric circuit upon said lever; a pin fastened to an outside support, said pin working in a slot in the disk, said pin controlling the movement of said disk and staying the lever on said disk so that contact between bindin post on said lever and contact pin on sai disk is broken, when the disk is not moved from its position by an outside force.
