FEED.
To all whom it may concern: 7 1 v Be itknown that I, IVAR GARLSON,'2L subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Leominster in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeds, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to a device for con trolling feed rolls adapted to draw a metal strip or strips through power presses and other machines where the strip is subjected to one or a succession of cutters, dies, and the like. When the press operates upon a single metal strip with a succession of tools it is essential that the cut or bend by one tool sustain a fixed relation to the cutor bend by another tool, therefore each advance of the strip should be uniform and slipping must be avoided.
The essential objects of my invention are to insure a positive take up, and a uniform tension and pull upon the strip; to prevent slipping of the stock on the rolls; and to avoid waste of the material of the strip; a universal adjustment without change in the construction of the feed to any spacing or distance between the cutting, piercing, swaging or other operation in a succession of tools which may be used in connection with this feed.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists of such parts and combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a power press showing in end elevation the feed rolls, and in side elevation, my feed controlling device, connected therewith,
Fig. 2, a partial section of the rolls and adjacent mechanism on line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3, a transverse section of the same on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and.
Fig. 4, an enlarged front elevation of the feed controlling device.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
In the drawings is shown a power press of usual construction comprising the table 6, head 7, plunger 8, tools 9 and 10, die 11, driving crank shaft 12, pulley 13 and reel 14, together with a'thin strip of stock15. The usual roll supports or uprigths 18 have their base 19 fixed to the table and are pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

vided with slots 20 for the bearing blocks 21 p I pressed byv springs 22... One roll shaft 24 is journaled in the lower portion of the up: rights, and the other, 26, in the blocks 21. The respective shafts carry the feed rolls 27 and 28, and intermeshing gears 29 and 30 respectively. The shaft 26:.has loose thereon one end of an arm 32 near whose other end is a pm 33, also loose in the end 34 of a connecting rod 35 carrying a pin 36 in a radial slot 37 in the crank disk 38 on the main shaft.
Upon the upper end of the arm 32' is a pin 40 upon which is journaled a roller 41 provided with peripheral flanges 42 upon both faces. In the vertical plane of the roller is a disk 44 fast on the shaft 26. Resting upon the. periphery of the disk is a wedge 46, having a concave lower face 47 to accommodate the peripheral face of the disk; and a convex upper face 48 to engage the roll 41. These curved faces 47 and 48 tend to converge to form the wedge. Against the thick end 49 of the latter presses the end of a flat finger 50 pivotally attached by a screw 51 to the arm 32. The flanges 42 of the roll 41 loosely overlap the sides of the wedge and disk. Thus the wedge is insured against ac-.
rotates the disk a fraction of a revolution.
When the rod 35 reverses its direction the arm 32 carries the wedge and roller back to their original positions, at the same time releasing the wedge from the roller so that the former slides over the disk without moving the same.
In order to counteract the momentum of the disk in its advance and prevent overrotation'a brake device is' employed. This consists of a metallic band 53 having upon its lower end a loop 54 embracing a pin 55 in one of the standards. The upper end of the band is fastened in a slot 56 in a bolt 57 by a rivet 58. The bolt is loose in a hole 60 in a lug 61 upon said standard. A nut 63 on the bolt rests upon a helical'spring 64, which in turn surrounds the bolt and rests on the lug. Thus the band is yieldingly and adjustably supported relatively to the disk. A strip of felt, leather or other material 66 fast to the band contacts with the periphery of the disk.
I claim 1. In a feeding device of the type set forth, a rotary member, a wedge acting on the periphery thereof, a roller acting on the wedge, an arm loose on the shaft of said rotary member and carrying said roller, a rotary disk and a connection between the same and said arm, and a finger carried. by said arm and bearing on the thick end of the wedge.
2. In a feeding device of the type set forth, a rotary member, a wedge acting on the periphery thereof, a roller acting on the wedge, an arm loose on the shaft of said r0- tary member and carrying said roller, a rotary disk and a connection between the same 20 and said arm, a finger carried by said arm and bearing on the thick end of the wedge, and a pair of geared rollers one of which is carried by the shaft of said rotary member and receiving intermittent rotary motion.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
IVAR CARLSON.
