SUPERHEATER FOR MARINE BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedOct. 29,1918.
Application filed April 20, 1917. Serial No. 163,351.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER F. Kansas, Jr., a citizen of the United States, resldm at New York, in the county and State 0 New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Superheaters for Marine Boilers, of which the following 1s a full, clear and exact description.
The present invention relates to superheaters designed more particularly for marine boilers, but applicable generally to other types, and is an improvement in the manner ofplacing or installing the superheater and of supporting it in position where it will receive the proper degree of heat from the gases of combustion.
Accordin to the invention, the superheater, pre erably one of the now wellknown Foster type, is located in the path of the ases from the boiler-tubes to the smoke stac and extends across substantially the whole of such space so that its surface secures the maximum contact with the hot gases without interfering to an a preciable or1 fobjectionable extent with the urnace itse a To su port the superheater in this relation to t e furnace and boiler, a plate is secured by bolts in brackets in the side of the uptake next to the boiler tube sheet and formed with a series of inclined slots or openings through which the rear bends of t e superheater tubes or elements pro ect and by which they are firml su ported. At the other end the ends of e tu pass through holes in a plate or other suitable support, and all of t ese ends are properl joined to the headers and connections whic l are contained in a box or chamber alongside the uptake and to which access may be readily. had, when necessary, for inspection or re air.
11 the drawin hereto annexed the details of construction 0 the improvement are illustrated. v
Figure 1 is a part longitudinal section of a the superheater. Fig. 2 is. a part end view and section of the boiler. r
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of the means forsupporting the superheater elements in the slotted plate: and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of a portion of said plate.
The boiler preferably of the marine type secured over an in the flue space gases, a perforated is or may be of any construction desired provided it has or is adapted to be provided with a passageway from the tubes to the smoke stack, suitable for the reception of the superheater in the manner hereinafter described. In the drawings this boiler is indicated by A, the tubes by B, and the passage-wa for the escape of gas or the uptake flue by In the latter above the bank of tubes are brackets D, secured to the wall of the uptake, and to these brackets by means of bolts E passing throu h angle plates F secured to plates G, the said plates are secured in position. As shown in Fig. 4, the plates 6 contain slots or inclined openings H The tubes K of the superheaters at their front ends pass through holes in the front wall of the uptake or through a plate 1., tfiening therein and are united to headers or to cross-connections N to make up the superheater in the usual manner, while the rear bonds of the tubes are passed throu h the openings in the plate G.
moval of the bolts, may be force back to permit of, this.
It will be observed that the superheater extends across the entire uptake, so that there will be a maximum absorption of heat, but the space occupied by the superheater tubes is not suflicient to interfere with or im air the furnace draft.
at I claim is 1. The combination with a steam boiler of the form described of a superheater located between the boiler tubes and the smoke stack, having spaced straight tubes extendinfacross the space in the hue of its ater mansion and occupying substantia y the whole passageway for hot near the rear wall of such space, through which the bends of the superheater tubes ex-.
tend and by which they are supported, and a ate secured to and front wall plate at the op osite side of the spage through which the en 5 of the tubes exten 2. The combination with a steam boiler of the form' described, of a superheater located in the flue space between the boiler tubes and the smoke stack, having spaced strai ht tubes extendin across the space in the me of its greater ension and occupying substantially the whole assa e-way for hot gases, brackets Secure to t e rear wall of the flue space, a plate removably secured thereto, containing perforations through which the bends of the superheater extend so as to be supported and protected from the direct action of the hot gases by said plate, and a plate fixed to the front wall through which the ends of the tubes extend to the headers and connections.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my 20 signature.
WALTER F. KEENAN, Jn.
Certificate of Correction.
It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 1,282,850, granted October 29 1918, upon the application of Walter F. Keenan, jr., of New York, N. Y., for an improvement in Super-heaters for Marine Boilers, an error appears in the printed specification req liring correction as follows: Page 2, line 2, claim 1, strike out the article the, second occurrence; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent 0508.
Signed and sealed this 7th day of November, A. D., 1922.
