Application led .December 20, 1917; Serial No. 208,68.
To all whom, it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR H. Berre, a citizen of the United States, residing ut Troy, .in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Collars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact def scription.
This invention relates to collars of the sooalled turnlown or fold type, articularly soft collars, and its object, brie y stated, is to provide a collar of simple construction, which can loe manufactured at low cost and yet be as lgoed or eren better in appearance than collars made in accordance with the prevailing practice.
in the preferred method of practising my invention the band, that is, the part which is adjacent to the wearers neck when the collar is Worn', can be made in the usual Way. by placing; two blanks together, with or Without .intermediate layer or ply; or it may be made or, a single layer composed of fabric of suitable body. The outer portion or top, that is, the part which is turned or folded dofn on the outside of the band, is
, made of a piurality of plies which are inten Woven with each other but has a thin ed e. f
which is inserted into or laid upon the topedge of the band. The two are then stitched, and the aforesaid thin edge of the outer portion then acts as a hinge, on Which said portion can 'ne folded easily and accurately,
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, in which one embodiment of the invention is illustrated' Figure is a pianwiew of the outer portion ci the collar.
Fig. 2 is a plan View oi the collar band. Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic pian View of the band and outer portion assembled.
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic cross section of the finished collar, say on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic cross section of afabric for the outer portionof the collar.
ldigu 6 is a planview ot tnefabric, show ing the layout of the blanks to be cut there- 'om. The band 10 is made in the usual manner,
collar is Worn. Usually the band has one or more intermediate plies of cheap fabric to give more body and stiilness, but to avoid confusing the drawings the intermediate ply orplies are not shown.
The outer portion or top 14 is composed of two outer layers 15, and, preferably, one or more inner layers or plies. One such inner layer is shown at 1G. The several layers composing the outer portion of the collar are integral with each other, so to speak; that is, they are interwoven with each other. The Weaving of such multiple fabrics is Well understood in the textile arts and need not be described in detail here. Suiiice it to say that, in general, as many layers of warp are used as there are to be ilies in the fabric and the weft threads are interwoven into the several warp-layers. At Whatis to be the upper edge of the outer portion or top the fabric is thinned, as by omitting one or more of the warp-layers, so that a thin selblanks for the outer portions or tops 14 can be cut out as indicated in Fig. 6, or any other convenient and economical layout can be used.
The thin edge of the interwoven outer portionl or top is inserted into the open to edge of the band as shown in Fig. 3, and the two are united by one or more rows of stitching', as 2l, Fig. it The said thin edge is by preference straight and the upper edge of the 'band curved, as indicated in Figs. l and 2, respectively, but-in joining the two parts; the straight edge of the outer portion or top is made to follow the contour oit the curved edge of the band, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to produce a tendency to curl. Then when the outer portion or top is folded down the whole collar will tend to assume a more or less circular form. A suiiicient Width of the thin edge is left outside of the band to serve as a hinge on which the outer portion can folded down upon the band.
it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the speciiie forni herein illus trated and dese1ibed,but can be embodied in other forms without departure from its spirit as defined by the following claim.
I claim: A 'fold 01 turn-down collar conlprising 2L and forming the inner portion of the c01- lar, said band having its upper edge curved;
and an outer portion composed of a pluralmemes ity of interwoven layers or piies and Woven with a straight thin edge, the latter oeng 10 secured to the curved upper edge of the band and con-forming to the curvature thereof.
lfn testimony whereof I here-.unto affix signature.
