To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. CLAY, a citizen of the United States, andresiding at Cedar Falls, in the county of Blackhawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and usefu1 Improvements, in Stanchions, of which the following is a description.
My invention belongs to that general class of devices known asstanchion's, especially cattle stanchions, and has an object the production of a stanchion of the kind de scribed suitable for all sizes of stock, that may be easily and quickly adjusted fer the different sized cattle. The invention has among its other objects the production of a device of the kind described that is simple, convenient, durable,- efficient, comfortable and satisfactory. It may be easily adjusted for different sized cattle, and is operative in substantially the same manner in its various adjustments. Many other objects and advantages of the-construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilledin the art from the disclosure herein made.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts therein shown anddescribed, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring first to Fig. 1, I have indicated in dotted lines the stall framework 1 -1 and head part 2, the same being suitably mounted on the base or curb 3. The stall construction may be as desired, that shown being merely to illustratethe application of the stanchion, and'not my preferred construction. The stanchion illustrated, in order to make clear the operation of my improved device, consists of the two coacting stanchion members a and 5 of suitable size, shape and material, which may be secured together at their lower ends in any desired manner, the preferred construction being hereafter described. In the stanchion construction shown the two stanchion members are hinged at the bottom with the upper ends slidably supported by and guided by a tubular head 8, the preferred construction being such that both stanchion members are movable, mechanism being employed so that movement of one simultaneously causes and controls the movement of. the other. The present invention, however, is applicable if only one stanchion member is movable. The members 4 and 5 are provided with extending parts 6 and 7 respectively, which extend into the tubular head 8, the parts having projections 6 and 7' arranged to overlie the guides 8 on the head 8. The head 8 may be provided with a ring 9, or equivalent means, and supported from the stall part 2 in any suitable or preferred manner. The controlling'mechanism referred to and illustrated consists of a' suitable screw or twisted member 1O, which extends through the head .6 on one part and the head 7 on theother part, movement of one stanchion member rotating the screw member, thereby causing the other stanchion member to be moved in an opposite direction to the first stanchion member.
My-present invent-ion resides particularly in mechanism or means for controlling the movement and alfording adjustment of the parts, so that the stanchion may be made applicable for stock of varying sizes. The construction shown does this without varying the operation of the stanchion in any way except to limit the movement of the parts in closing. As shown, I provide a latch member 11, which may be supported from the desired point; as shown it is carried by the stanchion member 5, being pivotally secured thereto at 12, 13 being an operating handle for the latch. The opposite end of the latch is extended as at 14 and provided with the desired number of shoulders 15, 16 and 17, arranged to co-act with or engage a lug 18, or equivalent part, on the head 6 of member 4, when both members are movable. .(See Figs. and 4.) It will be noted that these shoulders 15, 16 and 17 are'made of varying height, and that as the stanchions are moved together from the dotted position indicated in Fig. 1, the lug 18 will be engaged by the various shoulders until the movement of one or the other of the stanchions is checked or they reach the positions shown in Fig. 2, at which point checking means is unnecessary, as they will be limited by their own engagement. I also form the cam faces 15, 16 and 17 on the latch so that the movement of the stanchions to closed positions will cause the lug 18 to raise the latch, after which the same will drop back and the proper shoulder engage the lug.
Any suitable means may be provided for limiting the movement of the stanchion members, so that they may be speedily pushed together without attention as to the particular shoulder to be engaged. In other words, so that they may be adjusted for a certain size and always move together and stop for that adjustment until the adjustment is changed. For this purpose I have shown a pin 22 extending into the tubular head 8, and disposed at a point to engage one or the other of the parts 6 or 7, as shown, part 7. I provide three holes 19, 20 and 21, through any one of which the pin 22 may be projected. While the hole 19 is not ordinarily necessary, I prefer to provide the same. Obviously. when pin 22 is inserted in hole 19 the stanchion members can move together until they reach the positions shown in Fig. 2, at which time their further movement is checked, and the latch at shoulder 15 automatically engages with thelug 18, looking the stanchion in closed position.
In the adjustment shown in Fig. 3, the pin 22 is inserted in the hole 21. It will be seen that as the stanchion ends are moved together the projection or head 7 will engage with the pin 22, checking the movement of the stanchion member, this movementbeing transmitted to the member 6 through the screw 10, and that stanchion member is also checked at the same time. In this case the shoulder 17 will engage wit-h the lug 18 so that the stanchion members will be held and locked together substantially as shown .in Fig. 3. It will be noted, however, that this affords a wider opening, and consequently the same is suitable for larger sized stock.
It is also preferred to so hinge or connect the lower end of the stanchion members that, if desired, they may be adjusted to correspond with the adjustment at the upper end, so that the parts 4 and 5 may properly and comfortably lit the neck of the stock. I have shown a very simple arrangement, in Figs. 1 and 6, applicable to construction wherein both or one member is movable. The stanchion member 4is pro vided with a head 24, extended as at 25,
and provided with the desired number ofopenings or holes 26 therethrough. Member 5 is provided with a head 27 extended as at 28 and provided with the desired number of openings 29 therethrough. Ordinarily I prefer to construct the openings substantially as shown in Fig. 6. I also provide a pin or bolt 30 arranged to extend through the desired registering holes 26 and 29, the parts being adjustable by varying the assembly so that the bolt 30 engages with one or the other of the holes shown. I have not considered it necessary to show the same adjusted to a ditlerent position, as it would seemthat this is obvious in view of the simplicity of the same.
The construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8, is very similar to the construction previously described. In this case, however, the stanchion members 34 and 35 are provided with the parts 36 and 37 projecting into the tubular head 38, in which is arranged the screw 40, similar to the other construction. In this case I provide a latch lever 41, which is pivotally secured at 42 to one of the stanchion members, or the equivalent, the samehaving an operating handle 43. In this case a latch member 44 is carried by the lever 41,
the same being pivotally secured thereto at 44 in any suitable manner. The member 44 is provided with shoulders 45, 46 and 47, at each end, and the two parts of the stanchion members are each providedwith a lug 48 arranged to engage the several shoulders. The movement of the heads is limited by the pin 51 (see Fig. 8 in dotted lines), which may be passed through one or the other of the holes 49 and 50 when the shoulder l6 or 4:7 is to be engaged.
InFig. 9 is shown a modified form of hinge for the lower end of a stanchion. Referring to this figure, member 54 is provided with a bracket 56, which is extended as at 57, while member 55 is provided with a bracket 58 extended as at 59, which two extensions are formed with one or more holes 60. In securing the parts together, I provide a link 61, having the desired number of holes or openings 62 therein. In this case the stanchions are secured together by one or more bolts 63, the number of bolts depending upon the particular holes used. It is believed that the adjustment of this part is obvious from the drawing and the above description.
With the adjustable type of stanchion herein described, the stanchion, regardless of whether one or both members are adjustable, may be fitted to the particular cow or other stock occupying the particular stall to which the stanchion is applied, so that the same is securely as well as comfortably held. By-securely holding the stock there is no chance for the same to get loose in the barn, and in any way become injured or injure other stock. The advantage of com fort is well known among stockmen, comfortable cattle giving more milk, and the stock more easily puts on weight. With my construction it is not necessary to adjust the stanchion at each time to the stock. When the stall is occupied by a different animal the same may then be adjusted to that animal, and remain the same until it is again desired to change the same, or with young stock the same may be made larger as the stock ages. My device is simple and compact and will not easily become disarranged or get out of order. As before mentioned the mechanism is applicable to pracically any type of construction.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from 't-he spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement or combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1- 1. In a cattle stanchion of the kind described and in combination, a pair of spaced stanchion members, adjustable means for securing the lower ends of said members together, means for slidably and adjustably supporting the upper ends of sald members, and means for locking said members together at their upper ends, including a latch member carried by one member, and arranged at a plurality of points for engagement with the other member at any of said points, and means for limiting the sliding of said members as desired, whereby the members are locked and maintained in the desired relation to each other, to provide a predetermined space between them.
2. In a cattle stanchion of the kind described and in combination, a pair of cooperating stanchion members adjustably secured together at their lower ends, a bar for slidably supporting and connecting the opposite adjacent upper ends of said members, means carried by said bar for controlling and limiting the movement of said members toward each other, and means carried by one member for engaging the other member locking and preventing the movement of said members from each other.
8. In a cattle stanchion of the kind clescribed and in combination, a pair of co-acting stanchion members secured together at their lower ends, a bar arranged to engage and slidably support the upper ends of said members, means carried by said members for controlling the travel of said members relative to each other, an adjustable stop for limiting the travel of said members, and means for locking said members upon engagement with said stop.
4. In a cattle stanchion of the kind described and in combination, a pair of spaced co-acting stanchion members adjustably secured together at their lower ends, a bar arranged to engage and slidably support the upper ends of said members, means carried by said members for controlling the travel of said members relative to each other, an adjustable stop for limiting the travel of said members, and provide a predetermined space between the members, and means for locking said members upon engagement with said step.
5. In a stanchion of the kind described and in combination, a pair of spaced cooperating stanchion members, means for adjustably hinging the lower end of one member to the adjacent lower end of the other member, means for slidably connecting the other adjacent ends of said members, adjustable means for limiting the movement of said members whereby the space between the members may be varied at will, and means carried by one member and arranged to engage the other member for automatically locking said members together after they have reached said limiting means.
6. In a cattle stanchion of the kind described and in combination, a pair of stanchion members, means for pivotally securing the lower end of one of said members, means for slid ably supporting the upper end of said member and means for locking said members together at their upper ends, including a latch member carried by one member and provided with a plurality of downwardly extending hooks arranged longitudinally thereon, adapted for engagement with a cooperating part on the other member, whereby the members are maintained in the desired relation to each other and the distance the two are 10 apart at the to may be adjusted as desired.
