To all 'uihom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS ALFRED Moun'rroan, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at No. 162 Seymour avenue, cit of Newark, count of Essex, and State 0 New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Punch-Presses and the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to devices for preventing in'ury to operatives of power resses and the li e and consists in the main in providing a guard which must be placed in an efi'ective'position relative to the punch and die of the press before the clutch of the press can be released and the unch operated and which guard is so designed and mounted that it cannot assume its efiective position if the hands or fingers of the operative are in dangerous proximity to the punch and die, and therefore, the press cannot then be operated. The invention further consists in operating the guard to its effective position by an mitial movement of the controlling member of the press, such for instance, as the treadle, which initial movement must be completed before a continued movement of the controlling member releases the clutch, and which continued movement and release of the clutch is prevented if the guard is prevented from assuming its effective position by the presence in its path of the operatives finger or handand it is intended that the leverage exerted upon the controlling member by the presence of the operatives hand or finger in the path of the guard shall be suilicient to stop the movement of the controlling member without injury to the operatives hand or finger. An organization of a power press andgu'ard embodying these provisions is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation;

Referring to the drawings, a power ress 'having the usual frame A, crank sha t B,
plunger 0, and H -wheel D, is shown provided with a die and punch The crank shaft B is adapted to be released and thrown into connection with the fly-wheel D by a clutch G which may operate in any of the well known ways. The clutch G is operated by a downward pull on a rod H which is normally held in its upper position by the sprin I which likewise olds the clutch G out 0% engagement with the fly-wheel. 1 A uard J is pivoted to oscillate with a shaft from an upper or ineffective osition in which it ap ears in Figs. 1 an 2 to a lower or eflective position in which it a pears in Fig. 4. A spring L coiled on t e shaft K normally keeps theguard in its uppfr position and the engagement of a lever which is really the controllin member of the press, with a cam N on sha t K throws the guard to its lower position. The nose 0 of the lever M contacts a projection P at a oint not far from the axis of the shaft K w ile that portion of the guard J which will hit the fingers or hand of the operative leverage prevent a continuation of the movement of the lever M even though considerable pressure bebrought to bear by the foot upon a treadle Q connected by a rod R with the lever M. This arrangement effectually prevents the full operation of the lever M when a finger is in the danger zone and does so without injur to the finger by a hard pressure of the guard:
The nose 0 of the lever M after moving the guard to its lowermost or efiective position' is allowed to pass the projection P on the cam N and continue, its motion. During this continued move of the lever M, after the guard has been. carried to its safety osition, the clutch G'is to be operatedl spring S normally holds the lever M and the treadle Q in their upper positions. The lever M is connected with the clutch operating rod H by a connecting rod T through engaging terminal. loop portions, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to provide enough .lost motion to require the movement of lever of the guard to its efl'ective position before y it can release the clutch.
I have shown the ard J as a rod which sweeps through the anger zone and has a cage which surrounds the danger zone when the effective osition is reached, but it is obvious that t e rod alone may be used without the cage.
Having thus described my invention what I claim 1s:
1. In a safety device for punch resses and the like, in combination, a guar movable to an effective position, a controllin member therefor, means connected to sai guard and normall in the path of said controllin member w ereby movement of the contro ling member will cause sa1d ard to occupy 1ts eifectlve osition, sal means moving out of the pat of said controlling member when the guard occupies its effective position to permit further movementof the controlling member, means for actuatin said controlling member, a clutch, an clutch controlling means actuated-by said controlling member only upon the further movement thereof. 2. In a safety device for punch presses and the like, in combination, a frame, a shaft rotatably supported thereon and carrying a guard, a controlling member movably supported on said frame, said shaft being provided with means normallg inthe path of said controlling member w ereby movement of said member will rotate sald shaft to cause said guard to occupy its effective poclutch, and clutch controlling sition, said means of said controllin member when said guard occupies its effective normal position to ermit further movement of said controli member, means for actuating said contro ling member, a clutch, and clutch controlling means actuated by said controlling member only upon the further movement thereof. a

In a safety device for punch presses and the like in combinati0n,.a frame, a shaft rotatably supported thereon, a cam secured to said shaft and provided with a projection, a lever havin one end pivotally supported u on said nose at its ot er e'nd adapted to engage the projection on said cam, whereby movement of said lever will rotate said shaft to cause said guard to occupy itsefi'ective position, the projection on said cam moving out of engagement with the nose on said lever when said guard occupies its effective position to permit further movement of said lever, 11-
