Patented 0ot.'22-,-19.1S.
Application filed January 10; '1918. Serial No. 211,290.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CONRAD DANGnLo, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Leggingsfbf which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in that type of legging or puttee as generally shown and described in my co-pendlng application Serial No. 180,063. This form of legging is preferably made of flexible water proof material, and is so shaped as to be fitted around the ankle of the wearer, wound around the calf of the leg, and secured in position at its upper end immediately below the knee. In my application aforesaid, I have shown a tab at the upper end of the legging placed at right angles thereto and adapted to be tucked under the upper folds to secure the legging in position. The invention in the present case relates more particularly to the means for securing the upper end of the legging in place. A tab construction as shown in my co-pending application, depending as will be understood upon the length of the legging and the size and configuration of the leg to which it is applied, may come in an inconvenient position, and in order to obviate this difiiculty, in carrying out the present invention I dispense with the use of the angular tab and employ instead a strap and buckle which is passed through a loop in the upper end of the legging so as to be adjustable to any desired position irrespective of the place the end of the legging may assume, and secured in place on the leg of the wearer, and the present form of legging will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating the use of my present invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the legging in an unfolded condition.
Fig. 3 is a rear View showing the application of the lower part of the legging.
Fig. 1 is a plan of the lower extremity of the legging showing the end piece and the leather padding, and
Fig. 5 is a cross section taken through the upper end of the legging.
" Referring particularly to the drawing it will be seen that in carrying out this in vention the legging preferably comprises a strip of material indicated at 10 and which is made of khaki, canvas, woolen fabric, or any other suitable material which is preferably water proofed in any suitable manner. At the lower end this strip of material is cut or formed so as to fit the ankle of the wearer and for this purpose comprises a curve portion 11 to which is connected an end piece 12 continuing and completing the curved lower end of the legging. The end piece 12 is preferably secured to the extremity of the curved portion 11 by a line of stitching 13 or otherwise, and on the inner or reverse side of the legging at this place the same is fitted with a padding 14: of leather or other similar material to take the wear which necessarily comes on this part of the article. The lower curved end of the legging is adapted to fit the ankle of the wearer with the padded portion thereof at the rear as indicated in Fig. 3, and the central relatively straight portion of the legging, is wound around the calf of the wearer as indicated in Fig. 1. The upper portion of the strip forming the legging is curved in plan in the opposite direction to the curve at the lower end of the legging so that at the upper end the folds of the legging overlap each other.
At the upper end of the legging there is a strap 16 fitted at one end with a buckle 17 This strap 16 passes through a slot 18 provided in the legging proper adjacent the extremity thereof and lies between the upper extremity of the legging and a reinforcing piece 19 secured to the same on the reverse side thereof, there being parts of these members at the extremity which are not secured to one another so as to permit the strap to slide between the same and through the slot 18 and thus be adjusted to any desired position after the legging is otherwise in place.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that irrespective of the position the upper extremity of the legging may assume, when in place on the wearer, the strap 16 may be shifted to readily connect the free end thereof to the buckle and these parts then shifted to make the buckle assume a desired position.
I claim as my invention:
A legging or puttee comprising a Strip of material adapted at its lower end to fit the through a slot provided in the upper end ofankle of the wearer and having a relatively the strip and slidable between the extremity straight central portion adapted to be of-the strip and the said reinforcing piece. 10 Wrapped around the calf of the leg of the Signed by me this 15th day of December, wearer and an upper end, 'a reinforcing 1917.
piece secured to the reverse side of the strip at the upper end thereof, and a strap passing CONRAD DANGELO.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,'by addressing the "Commissioner of IPatents, Washington, 13.0.
