it is necessary to replace the same. Byreplacing or renewing the outer portion only of the roll a great saving is insured.
The object of the invention is to provide a construction whereby the outer portion or shell of the roll may be easily and quickly removed from or replaced upon the inner portion, hub or core of the roll.
The above object is achieved by utilizing a tapered huh and a shell having'a tapered seat fitting over the hub and providing a special construction of groove and lug by which the several parts are interlocked. Blocks or plugs may also be used to keep out of the grooves dirt and foreignmaterial,
which would interfere with the easy separation of said parts.
,The invention will be best; understood from aconsideration of the following detail 7 description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification with the further understanding that while the drawing shows a practical.
form of the invention, the latter is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing, but may be changed andmodified, so long as such changes and modi= fications come within the scope of the appended claims.

In the embodiment of the invention here illustrated the hub or core 1 which is made in one piece is tapered, as. clearly shown in Fig. 5: The reduced end of the core is indicated by the reference character 2, and the enlarged end thereof by the reference character 3. The core is fixed in any suitable manner to the shaft 4, which may be mounted in suitable bearings upon-the framework of the crushing engine which has not been illustrated, inasmuch as it'forms no part of the present invention.
Extending inwardly from the reduced end of the core or hub l. and upon the periphery thereof are substantially L-shaped grooves 5 and 6. These grooves are spaced equi-distantlv around the circumference of the hub. Each groove comprises a portion or branch 7 extending inwardly from the reduced end 2 of the hub and toward the opposite end 3. as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The inner portion or branch .8 of the groove is bent, extends circumferentially of the hub. and obliquely tothe axis thereof and projects toward the enlarged end 3 of the hub. The obliquely arranged portion 8 of each. groove is provided with sides 9 and a closed end 10. The portions 8 of the grooves alsoextend around the hub in the same direction circumferentially and gradually taper toward the closed ends 1.0.
The outer'portion or shell -11 of the roll is cast in one piece and is provided with a tapered seat or central bore 12 having a reduced end 13,- and an enlarged end 14', as shown in F igs- 3 and 4. Projecting inwardly from the inner periphery of the shell and within the bore are lugs 15 and 16, which are arranged at diametrically opposite points and are adapted toregister with and slide within the portions 7 of the grooves. It will be seen that, as the shell is placed upon the hub with the lugs registering with the grooves, the axial movement thereof upon the hub will be limited by reason of the fact that the lugs will engage the sides 9 facing the portion 7 of the grooves. The hub and shell are then rotated relatively to each other, whereby the inclined sides 17 of the lugs engage the sides 9 to the left, as shown in Fig. 1,exerting a It willbe apparent that the wedging of,
the shell upon the hub and the wedging of the lugs in the tapered portions of the' inner branches of the grooves effects a double wedging action of the shell upon the hub, and thereby tightly and securely fastens said shell in place.
lVhen'the shell has been thus located upon the hub, plugs 18 are inserted llltO'i'llG portions 7 of the grooves and prevent'the access of dirt andforeign matter to the grooves whereby the danger of clogging the same, thus preventing the easy removal of I tlieshell, is obviated.
it is preferable, when operating, to 1'0- tate the hub or core in the direction 1ndi 'cated by'the arrow, Fig. 1, whereby the ends 10-of the'grooves engage the lugs 15 and 16 and cause the shell to rotate in the same direction, thereby nreventing'the slipping of the shell around the hub as an axis. It is thought that the operation and the manner in which-now invention may be nianipulated to separate and to unite the several parts of the roll will be apparent from the above description and needs no further elaboration. r
The plugs 18 perform the additional function of retaining the lugs 15 and 16 in the branches 8 of the grooves.
What is claimed is:
" 1. In a device of the character described,
a tapered one-niece hub, and a one-piece shell having a tapered seat for the hub, said parts being detachable, the hub having a plurality of L-shaped grooves, each groove comprising a portion extending inwardly from the smaller end thereof lengthwise of the hub, and a portion extending obliquely to the axis of the hub and circumferentially thereof and forming a continuation of the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing Washington, 1L0.
